Resident Evil 5 Review

This short, nostalgic add-on is cheap enough to make it worth returning to the old mansion.

I'm getting a sense of deja vu...
The first single-player add-on for Resident Evil 5, called Lost in Nightmares, lays on nostalgia for the old days of Resident Evil so thickly that it spends a lot of its 90 or so minutes situated squarely in fan-service territory. Among the things you will see in this episode:

  • A big spooky mansion, complete with grand foyer and staircase limned with lightning
  • A first-person, walking-through-doors animation between rooms
  • A diary entry containing the words "itchy, tasty"
  • A long moonlit hallway with windows that burst inward as you walk by
  • Various plates and crests, bearing the images of mythical figures
  • Jill Valentine
  • Jill Valentine playing "Moonlight Sonata" on a piano

If you played the very first Resident Evil way back when, you've realized by now that Lost in Nightmares represents Capcom's slightly cheeky effort to recapture a little slice of that seminal original game with nice high-def graphics and modernized gameplay mechanics. Though, it also seems like part of the joke that an included easter egg even lets you play this episode with the trademark unwieldy fixed camera angle that helped define the series in the first place.

Lost in Nightmares is set during a flashback you saw during Resident Evil 5, when a still-brunette Valentine and Chris Redfield assault the cliffside mansion of Umbrella Corp. founder Ozwell Spencer, before Jill and Wesker end up tumbling out a window and over the side of the cliff. The first half of this episode lets you explore a mansion almost identical to the one in the original Resident Evil, though it stops just short of actually populating that mansion with real shambling zombies for you to shoot. So the illusion is not entirely complete, but it's close.

Maybe it's time for another remake?
The other half takes you through some sinister dungeons where you'll fight one rather burly new type of enemy half a dozen times, and match up colored cranks with like-colored podiums. Then you fight Wesker. Then it's over! It's worth noting that your character progress from Resident Evil 5 proper has no bearing on what goes on in this flashback. Nor is there even a save system, which initially struck me as ridiculous. But the episode is so short you really don't need one, especially on subsequent playthroughs when you know where everything is.

There is a short list of new achievements to gain, including 18 S.T.A.R.S. emblems to hunt down. You can also unlock Jill as a playable character (when playing single-player) and Professional difficulty level (best suited for co-op). Actually, you should always play this thing in co-op, since there are a couple of spots where your AI partner might get themselves killed, sending you back to the last checkpoint. And there's a modified version of the Mercenaries score-attack mode that features a couple of new characters, if you didn't get your fill of Mercenaries already. But the new story episode is the real reason to get this add-on.

Capcom made the right call pricing Lost in Nightmares at $5 on both XBLA and PSN. It's short and a bit thin on content, but what's there is pretty, well-produced, and a satisfying if slightly silly curiosity for anyone who remembers the first Resident Evil even a little bit fondly.     Brad Shoemaker on Google+

I dunno, even for its price range it still feels too short =(. Was nice to find out that theres actually some random placement of the weapons though. The mercenaries reunion add on too is a joke, its still fun but being kept seperate from the original mercs is ridiculous.

I agree. It's a good add-on for only $5. Lots of nostalgia.

Posted by morningdrive

i still wish they included some original zombies..atleast reskinned ones like that giant dude which is just a reskinned version of the guy with the huge axe in RE5

Posted by buzz_killington

The GameCube remake still looks pretty damn good with the pre-rendered backgrounds and all. They should release on Xbox Live or PSN.

I have no clue why companies release add-ons for games that came out a year ago. I loved Resident Evil 5 but I don't have any interest in replaying old games at this time. Maybe in the Summer futurelog I'll buy the Gold Edition of RE5 but right now, I only care for games like God Of War 3, Yakuza 3, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII and MLB '10: The Show.

Yeah, I know, Yakuza 3 is an old game.

Well... it's only $5.

Wait, you can play the episode with Fixed Camera Angles? Sold. Again.

At least its only $5. There have been far worse deals when it comes to game DLC.

Great review, Brad.  Being somewhat of a Resident Evil aficionado, I'll be the first to admit fanboy tears were shed upon activating the "Easter Egg." Simply beautiful ;_;

Resident Evil 2 REmake, Capcom?

Posted by artofwar420

Sounds great, but I think I'll wait for the super gold crazy edition.

Posted by JJOR64

I'm hoping to get this soon.  I want to get an S rank in this game now, but that means I have to get the multiplayer.   :(

I might have to play Resident Evil 5 again. Drats.

No PC DLC?
Posted by TheIneffableBob

This looks better than all of the Resident Evil 5 campaign.

Posted by Undeadpool

Hmmm, only $5 you say? I really liked Mercs mode in both RE 4 and 5, so I'll have to see with this one...

Posted by Sil3n7

Meh this looks ok...

Makes me kind of wish I hadn't sold my RE5, I would totally get this if I still had it.

Looks like they're really starting to pay attention to what the fans want... surely they are ready to take the series back to it's roots for the next installment, needs a good overhaul... but do we a have to wait five years for it!

I can't speak for the quality of the package, but it seems Brad is the one not quite taking the RE1 angle serious, not Capcom themselves. If this DLC does anything to return the RE series to the more slow-paced style (which the still awful controls might be better suited for) then this is way more substantial than a lot of the RE5 campaign was.

You make it sound like such a return would be a good thing. I disagree.
Also, the controls work just fine.

being an original RE fan i would get this if i had a ps3.

Looks like fun!

Nice review. $5 seems like a right price.

I love nice short reviews. I'll download this next time i'm on live.

I'll be honest, I chuckled when Jill picked the lock on the front door and for 5 bucks, this seems alright. However, it certainly goes to show just how kinda retarded the RE series is. You pull giant levers to unlock doors, people hide cranks in safes and you put crested slates into doors? Also, the AI is still terrible, having 2 people is pretty useless if the partner can't even flank enemies but instead is glued to you and stands in your way.

Bought it. Played it. Loved it.

I already have an S-rank in Lost in Nightmares.
Or is it Linger in Shadows? Dammit that's right. And they have almost identical cameras too.
Interesting that no full game title in the database has "Nightmares" plural.

The question is...WAS THE CONTENT ALREADY ON THE DISK?!?!

Hey, I miss games like the original Resident Evil.  They controlled just fine, too, and they don't really exist anymore.  But I'd hate to see Resident  Evil 6 be anything other than an RE5-style co-op shooter.

@RVonE: I make it sound like that because that's how it is. The quality of the rest of the game is a matter of opinion (I enjoyed it even though it wasn't very memorable), but the RE5 controls were most definitely broken given what Capcom so clearly was aiming for in terms of pacing, number of enemies on screen at the same time etc. Thus, a return to a more slow-paced affair is a good idea for a series which relies on the current control scheme. That you personally might not want to play a less action-oriented RE is another question entirely...

If Capcom used something like conventional Gears of War-style controls, RE5 wouldn't be frantic at all. I'd go even a step further and say that RE5 wasn't as frantic as you make it sound. I really don't agree with your opinion that RE5's controls were broken, rather, they added to the good times I've had with that game (artificial as it may be). Also, claiming that "that's how it is" is contestable since different people had different experiences with the same controls. As such, it is not how it is, but, instead, you feel you had a poor (or less than optimal) experience with this game because of its controls. And that is totally fine--I just had a different (more positive) experience. I do agree that story-wise it wasn't very memorable.

For 5 bucks? Not bad at all, I enjoyed it. Good little add-on that brings you back to the original RE days.

I am just wandering if anybody knows whether this is on the disk with the gold edition or whether its one of those code on the manual affairs where you download it with the code in the box?

Also is the versus mode included with the Gold edition and any other content?

Thank you. Good review and gave me a good impression of what to expect.

Pretty good deal for only $5.  Yea sure I would have like a few zombies thrown in (but i'm guessing this might be after the zombie thing), but in the end it was a fun challenging episode.  I also really enjoyed the darker feel...  I mean I enjoyed the very sunny India feel, but it was really nice to see the darker feel with this DLC...  I'm just hoping the next DLC chapter is as good as this one.
Posted by latenitegamer

It was a good hour of play. Im sure that any RE fan would enjoy it. Mercs reunion is pretty interesting to. A remake of the first on 360 would be sweet!!!!

Posted by WilliamRLBaker

hmm...yeah I don't seem to be interested in this, but since its pretty much guranteed the gold edition is coming out i will sell my copy of RE5 i should still be able to get 20 for it at gamestop or gamexchange.

Edited by ptys

Maybe I was a little harsh on RE5... playing Sheva as "Red Riding Hood" is awesome!.. uhmm.

Easter egg for fixed camera angles? SOLD!

Posted by spartangears

definitely can't wait to to this out when i get RE5:gold edition for xbox 360. I wish capcom made RE1,2,3 and CV for XBLA.

Posted by DAD_FIGHT
@Garfield360UK: I dunno if anyone has answered your inquiry yet, but the bonus content is only gonna be on the disk for the PS3 version. The 360 version just comes with some voucher codes, so if you've already got RE5, there's probably not much point in swapping for the new edition.

i'd like the next Resident Evil to be more modern.

"oooooh it's an old mansion"

"ooooooooooh it's a scary village"

"oooooooooooooooh it's a scary ugly monster"

why can't it take place in a modern city for once. Sure it might be a problem coming up with tricky puzzles and all that but then just rethink the way Resident Evil normally is played.

it's getting a little tiresome...

FYI Josh is a part of BSAA. He was that black dude that was more or less RE5's master of unlocking.

Because that's the genre... if you want to play in a city my not try another of the nine billion games out there?.. Part of the reason why people don't like this game is that it's too modern. This expansion is exactly what I'm looking for, myself being a big Resident Evil fan.
Posted by ShaolinSpade

how long does it last exactly?

Posted by Kiro

Reading this only makes me want to play the RE1 remake for the Gamecube, man I loved that game. RE5 was kinda bland, was just more of RE4, but not quite as good. they tried too hard to make a modern third person shooter but without going all the way, I can't move and shoot? c'mon, it's not like Resident Evil relies on suspense anymore, just give it up.

totally missed the emblem to shoot in the spiked room. i haven tplayed this, i noticed it in the vid though

Well im a Resident Evil fan too but id like to see something completely new. Resident Evil was best in the past. It's being recycled over and over. Let's see something new that can revolutionize the  Resident Evil experience.

Jeez, give Capcom a break. They already reinvented and revolutionised the series with RE4... then they added split screen co-op for the first time in any RE game in RE5. I agree that RE6 needs to mix things up a little (little less action, little more puzzling), but I've never quite understood why Capcom keep getting so much flack off people for not trying anything new in this series.

Resident Evil has changed it's formula way more than alot of other franchises I can think of (Halo, God of War, Silent Hill, Devil May Cry etc.)
Posted by MrSpaceMan

ill probably get it

Posted by Ulong

If you have a buddy to play with, mercanaries is the real reason to get this expansion. Hell, mercanaries is the real reason to own the entire game of resident evil 5.

RE2 remake.
I demand it, CapCom!
