A Ridge Racer made by a finnish devoloper? Or atleast that guy is finnish..

#10 Posted by turilas (31 posts) -

Definitely interested in this since Bugbear is involved. And it's Joonas Laakso, not Laasko.

That was the best way to answer that question 'We're not announcing that yet, but it certainly does look that way doesn't it?'

E3 2011 the year of people using franchise names to sell games but not really having jack shit to do with past games in the franchise!

#18 Posted by AuthenticM (3790 posts) -

Why didn't Jeff ask the guy about the grammatically incorrect name?

#19 Posted by chickdigger802 (502 posts) -

weird, get some Top Men to link this vid to the actual game page ;)

Unbounded

adj.

1. Having no boundaries or limits: unbounded space.

2. Not kept within bounds; unrestrained: unbounded enthusiasm.

There was once a time when Ridge Racer games got me excited. Eh, not anymore.

#22 Posted by FoogleSmoogle (82 posts) -

This is bullshit. As a Ridge Racer fan I agree that the games were getting tired because they used the same exact maps with each game, but this is totally not Ridge Racer at all. I LIKE the japanese'ness of the series and all of the crazy shit like being able to play as a PAC-MAN UFO, and all of the crazy music. This has none of what makes Ridge Racer charming at all. Stop using titles to sell your game that wouldn't sell shit otherwise and then have NOTHING from what the fans expect to be in it.

#23 Posted by HyperionXR (277 posts) -

Grammatically correct or not, the title blows. Game looks decent though!

#24 Posted by MeatSim (10927 posts) -

Well this sounds intriguing and I don't much care for racing games.

#25 Posted by Xpgamer7 (2393 posts) -

A Ridge Racer game with normal drifting?!?!? The balance of the world is changing.

#26 Posted by ParamedicFoetus (63 posts) -

Sure the game might be great but why call it Ridge Racer? I don't understand what they gain from attaching the franchise, anyone whose buying decision would be swayed by the ridge racer title would surely recognise that this has next to nothing to do with the rest of the series

The success of the last five Ridge Racer games which were all basically rehashes of their predecessors kind of proves that the type of people buying Ridge Racer are not exactly the most educated shoppers.

Maybe they just really like Ridge Racer. There are a bunch of games all trying to be the best at a certain type of racing experiance, I always liked that Ridge Racer offered a completely different racing experiance in not being like driving at all. I'm not saying that it is a bad idea to make some changes to make the series more widely relevant but Ridge Racer had a strong identity in a crowded market that doesn't always offer that much variety, and to lose that  seems like it might lose the fans it has without guaranteeing any new ones.

i like ridge racer

The racing genre has a massive amount of variety right now. Probably more variety than any other video game genre. Ridge Racer's primary trait that sets it apart is its poor quality.

That does seem to be the general opinion I guess, but for me I still hugely enjoyed Ridge 6 & 7 and arcade style racers like Sega Rally, Outrun and Ridge Racer are seemingly condemned to a future of cheap download titles with little content. I guess as a fan of the genre it seems a shame to see one of the few franchises I can rely on to deliver the type of game I enjoy change so much when I feel there's still life in that type of game.
#33 Posted by Rolyatkcinmai (2699 posts) -

@ParamedicFoetus: But Ridge Racer has not changed since early-PS2 era. I mean even the tracks are the same. So just keep playing whichever one you like most, because that's all you were going to get in numbered Ridge Racer titles anyway. It's not like they're doing this instead of innovating. They're doing this instead of releasing the same damn game as a launch title for every system ever and just adding a +1 to the title.

#34 Edited by ParamedicFoetus (63 posts) -
@Rolyatkcinmai: All the tracks in 6 were new. 7 was a port of 6 to PS3 and they still included new tracks and customization options to the cars. The original Seafront track appears as a bonus in 7 but aside from that (and the 3ds game) the issue of reusing the same tracks is not accurate. A lot of the image problem the series now has seem to be down to people who haven't played the games hearing the similarities and assuming they're the same game. Anyone whos played 5 and 6 could tell you they've moved the series forward just as much as the forzas, dirt or gran turismos of the world

This game sounds cool, but I am also in the camp of wanting more Ridge Racer style Ridge Racer games. People can say what they want, but RR7 was great fun and there's not really anything else like those games. I'm a huge sim racer fan and I enjoy stuff like Burnout, but Ridge Racer is unique enough to have it's own place too.

So basically they wanted to make an 'action racing' style game but knew it would have a hard time standing out so they borrowed the Ridge Racer name to slap on it?

#38 Posted by Hector (3375 posts) -
I wish they would've kept the unrealistic drifting which defined Ridge Racee. :(

To be honest, I kind of hoped that when Bugbear had an announcement for a "new racing game" it was going to be another in their Flatout series. This could be interesting though.
