But what really sets this game apart and makes it a classic is that it becomes somewhat of an RPG when you come into various towns. Here you'll find a wealth of helpful items to aid you on your valiant quest to rescue your girlfriend. You can spend your hard earned coin (actually, you "earn" by beating the snot out of dudes) in restaurants, book stores and health food shops. Hamburgers will replenish your health gauge, but might also add some stamina, strength or increase some other attribute. The book store has plenty of new moves/techniques to help you level up and deal with the more difficulty villains, and the Japanese origin of the game is felt when you stop in the sushi bar to chow down on some squid or fish.
The game in its console form is a cousin of sorts to the Renegade series of games. This can be traced to Renegade being a western localisation of Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, that arcade game itself being the predecessor of River City Ransom.
RCR was originally an NES game, but has been re-released on various systems. Most recently, Nintendo added River City Ransom as a downloadable game on the Virtual Console Wii Shop for 500 WIi Points.
Side note
In the original Japanese version of River City Ransom, the characters wore schoolboy jackets & belonged to high schools instead of gangs. The American version changed it to jackets could be mistaken for bath robes & beating up evil gang members seemed to fit better.

Alex and Ryan spread their violent brotherly love across River City in search of a kidnapped girlfriend, stolen by the maniacal leader of a rival gang.
Alex and Ryan (not formerly of GS), are on a mission to clean up the streets, cold-clock some thugs, rescue their girls, and take back the school in the classic NES game. Gamers take control of these squatty lookin' pompadoured bros in a side-scrolling beat 'em up game that proves to be much deeper than the punch punch kick formula made great in that other brother brawler, Double Dragon. Sure, you can run, dash, punch, kick, jump, and even arm yourself with an arsenal of found object weaponry (lead pipes, rocks, tires, and brass knuckles) through increasingly difficult stages; and, suure, you can duke it in some awesome boss battles. Sure, there are even some simple platforming elements that you will have to traverse. But what really sets this game apart and makes it a classic is that it becomes somewhat of an RPG when you come into various towns.
