I need some views on Boby Kotick for an assignment I'm working on for college. Vent away! Thanks!
Robert Kotick
Robert Kotick is the President and CEO of Activision Blizzard.
What do you think of Robert Kotick?
he's kinda like an evil villain but often makes PR blunders that make him look like a dick or even more of an evil villain.
I don't think about Kotick at all. Kotick's views or how he is steering the direction of Activision does not effect my gaming choices what so ever. He's a buisness man plain and simple. His job is to protect the financial interests of Activision and it's share holders. That is all.
He's not winning a popularity contest that is for sure. I wouldn't think ill towards him if it wasn't for his propensity for going out of his way to show how little he thinks of the medium and culture he works in.
@Mrskidders: and if he isn't, he has the money to make you lie about it...
I really don't think he helps activision at all. He may be good at the business side, but his stupid comments on monetising CoD etc just get gamers backs up and that wont help the company image. Just because they are the biggest third party publisher in the world doesn't mean they should act like everyone else is beneath them...

"We as gamers don't think about it in the same way that the investors do. We know that what he is currently doing will end up hurting him because we have seen EA do the same thing. The investors only know that the brands he has sell a lot, he is focusing on selling as much as he can as fast as he can. They are going to keep buying stocks into his company until his inevitable drop, then they will sell and his company will hurt enough that he will lose his job.
Meh, his job isn't to win popularity contests. He's the sort of guy every big corporation needs to keep the bottom line in sight, and it's hard to argue that he's anything but brilliant at it. Of course, being brilliant at it means pissing off everyone else. So he does his job, and the general hate here for him proves it. Most gamers do not pay attention to him, and I'd guess 90% of people who buy Activision games wouldn't recognize the name if you said it to them. He's pretty invisible to anyone but the hardcore. Most people also don't much care about corporate image. They just want kick-ass games. So I doubt his general idiocy matters much in the grand scheme of things. If Activision thought they didn't need him, or that his presence was a net negative, he'd be gone. Yet, there he is, sitting on a pile of money as big as fuck.
He's a business man, he see's that a game is selling well and he'll release a new one year after year until the franchise is run into the ground and dies. See: Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero and soon Call of Duty. The very few original IPs Activision releases, Singularity, are given no support and are basically sent out to die with no marketing of any kind. I honestly don't know how Blizzard are able to keep them back, there should be at least 3 Warcraft and 2 Starcraft spin offs by now.
He does his job too well, he doesn't play any games he just keeps the share holders happy, his lawyer department is bigger than his creative department and he'll sue anyone who gets in his way. He's the kind of guy this industry doesn't need.
" He's the kind of guy this industry doesn't need. "You say that but every medium has this kind of guy in it. The problem is that he's more successful in this medium than the same people in the others. You don't find someone like him in other mediums as successful as he is here. We may be an artistic medium but no matter what every medium needs someone like him to make sure that it doesn't die.
" Bobby Kotick is a pretty cool dude, he kills children and may/may not be a gorgon. "I heard eh doesnt afraid of anything.
he should die....just die a very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very slow and painful death.
I think Robert Kotick is a very good businessman, by far the person most synonymous with capitalism in the video games industry, someone who appears to lack knowledge of video games, someone who is not afraid of speaking of plans which may enrage consumers, someone who is loathed by a large portion of the more knowledgeable video game enthusiasts and a douchebag. People try to protect to protect him, saying it's his job to do what he does but that doesn't make him any less of a douchebag.
he is a very good businessman, he wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't. But you have to admit that a lot of his decisions are focused on making more money in the short term. He is the king of milking franchises for all they are worth. The fact that we have seen the downfall of old favorites like Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk so quickly makes me wonder if he will be able to do the same thing with Call of Duty games without damaging what is now the biggest gaming franchise out there.
And I am really happy that he seems to have limited control of what happens on the Blizzard side of the company.
My real opinion about Mr. Kotick is that he knows how to run a busines and make a lot of money, but he sure isn't a game creator. That is good for stockholders and less so for actual gamers.
He directed his security staff to interrogate Infinity Ward employees for six hours in a windowless room. He reduced many to tears. This was a step in his overall goal of denying Infinity Ward their royalties from Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. He is the most dangerous individual to the gaming industry in the present. His attempts to steal more and more cash from gamers in the midst of a recession inspires disgust in me. This is while he blatantly lies to the studios that work for him by denying them promised wages, and closes them down, in effect firing all employees, if they don't bend to his underhanded business tactics. He is killing gaming on both the developer and consumer sides. In conclusion, I hope to one day encounter him in a back alley.
To be honest he is a fantastic businessman and makes shitloads of money for everyone associated with Acitvision. Doesn't stop him being generally bad for the video game world with his open dislike towards innovation and creativity. He is also constantly shitting on small developers by basically saying 'you don't work for me, therefore you're not worthwhile' (not an actual quote).
Overall I really don't like him and his approach to video games, but doesn't stop him making a heap of cash.
