Harmonix, MTV Games, and EA return with the sequel to Rock Band. Rock Band 2 ships with 84 on-disc songs, 20 free downloadable songs, backwards compatibility with all existing DLC, and the ability to import in many songs from the first Rock Band.

Overview

Following the huge success of the first Rock Band, Harmonix immediately began work on Rock Band 2.  It was released as a stand-alone game (not bundled with instruments) on September 14th, 2008 for the Xbox 360. The PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation 2 versions will be released as both stand-alone games as well as bundled with the new instruments on October 19th, 2008. The Xbox 360 bundle will also be launched then.

Rock Band 2 ships with 84 songs on-disc.
Some notable inclusions on the set list include AC/DC's first song in a rhythm game with "Let There Be Rock" and Guns N' Roses "Shackler's Revenge" off their upcoming album "Chinese Democracy".It also includes a voucher redeemable for another 20 songs asDLC (downloadable content), free of charge. At this time Harmonix has not announced which songs or song packs to be redeemable with the voucher, though registration for the free content has already begun on their website.

The game features many new features that were not present in the original Rock Band, such as a drum trainer and online Band World Tour.

Gameplay

Picking up where the first Rock Band left off, Rock Band 2 introduces a number of new features and gameplay modes to an already wide array of options. Perhaps the most notable of which is the
Rock Band Gameplay
decision to combine Solo Tour and Band World Tour into one mode entitled World Tour. The World Tour mode seamlessly incorporates robust online play into the equation as well as adding new gigs based on your downloaded DLC (downloadable songs) and not just the on-disc songs. Although Solo Tour has been rolled into this new mode, it plays something like it once did, but allows players to progress at their own skill levels based on the gigs--similar to the original's Band World Tour mode. In addition to this, another new mode known as Tour Challenges has been added to the mix in order to get the most out of even the most experienced rockers.

All DLC from the original Rock Band is compatible with Rock Band 2, and is implemented seamlessly into the play list if  any downloaded tracks are found on the console's HDD.

You can now purchase a license through the Rock Band options menu for 5 dollars which allows all DLC purchased in Rock Band to be playable in Rock Band 2 it also allows you to rip most on disc songs (This includes the European DLC that came with the European version of the game) to the HDD for use in Rock Band 2. Songs exempt from this transfer are "Paranoid" as made famous by Black Sabbath, “Run to the Hills” as made famous by Iron Maiden, and "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. Also Tokio Hotel’s “Through the Monsoon” will not be available for transfer from from the European disc release of Rock Band.

An In-Game Music Video
Battle of the Bands is a mode that derives from what players may expect and then proceeds to in an unexpected, but welcome, direction. The mode allows for players across the world to compete in normalized and frequently updated challenges that each have their own requirements. The challenges are robust in that they allow for limitless replay value that will grab the attention of those that continue to play with each week's downloadable content releases and those that do not indulge in it.

Similarly, Quickplay has been upgraded tremendously with the allowance of setlist creation. Players are now able to organize nearly any number of songs for short or lengthy jam sessions. Other features include a drum trainer mode to teach sprouting drummers some of the more advanced techniques and advanced leaderboards that are tracked across the system's community as well as the RockBand.com community. Naturally, many more customization options have been added to the game to get even more out of the experience for players' created rockers.

New Features

Online World Tour

Rock band 2 now allows for you to take your band online. Hire your friends from around the world to play in your band in a tour around the world via Xbox Live or PlayStation Network.

Drum Trainer

Rock Band 2 attempts to teach those having trouble keeping time on the drums with a new drum trainer. It has a series of different drum beats ranging from basic patterns to more challenging rhythms. It also contains a freeplay mode where you can play along with any song on the 360 or PS3 HDD. It also includes a trainer to help you with your freestyle notes, just to make them sound right on with the song.

Tour Challenges

Tour Challenges require certain players or other requirements to complete. At first you compete only against those on your friend list, but it will open to the entire world if you're able to beat all of your friends. DLC is fully integrated into this mode as the challenge list will be update regularly as new DLC is released.

Battle of the Bands

With Rock Band 2 you are able to take your created band and challenge bands across the world with band leaderboards available on rockband.com.

No Fail Mode

When having a Rock Band party there maybe people with different experience in playing the game. Especially after a few drinks people might start to fail during a song and end the song for the whole band. To avoid failing a song you can activate the No Fail Mode for those people and keep playing the game together.

Breakneck Speed

The Hyperspeed Mode from the Guitar Hero games is back. You can double the scrollspeed of the fretboard for all the instruments but not the vocals. This is not considered a cheat but rather a gameplay option, because the amount and speed of the notes as well as the timing window stays the same, the notes are just more spaced out on the fretboard.

Instruments

Guitar
Let there be guitar...there was guitar.
Guitar

Like its predecessor, Rock Band 2 will be available in a bundle featuring all new instrument peripherals. The new Fender Stratocaster guitar, while functioning nearly the same, has a number of improvements from the last and features a new sunburst finish. This new Strat improves on the original Rock Band guitar by having a more reliable strum bar, quieter and more responsive buttons, and a new calibration system that allows you to calibrate the audio/visual lag directly from the guitar. The guitar once again features an effects switch with five effects and the high neck solo buttons.

Let there be drums....there was drums!

Drums

The new drum kit is improved in terms of functionality by offering more responsive pads with better rebound. The pads are also quieter and velocity sensitive, meaning the volume of the notes you hit in game will be determined by how hard you hit the pads. The drumset also includes a new kick pedal that will be reinforced with metal plating, offering a far more reliable and longer lasting pedal. There are also expansion plugs located on the back of the kit which allow you to plug in optional cymbal additions (sold separately). The cymbals will act as their respectively colored pads.

Ion Drums

Ion Drum Set
Ion Drum Set

A drum kit that has all the features of a electric drum set will also be available for $299.99. This drum kit will work with Rock Band as a normal controller, but can also be used as a real electronic drum kit. However, an electronic drum module, or "drum brain", is needed to for this feature.

Let there be rock!!

Microphone

The mic offered in the Rock Band 2 is the same as the original and functions in the same way.

Compatibility

All Rock Band instruments are compatible with Rock Band 2, and vice versa. Also, through confirmation from Microsoft and Sony for Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively, all other instrument peripherals from games such as Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Revolution will be compatible with Rock Band as well. This is not the case on the Wii due to technical differences.
