From Giant Bomb
Added by KampfVerein on Nov. 6, 2009

I've played plenty of Band Quickplay on LIVE in my time, and these are my recurring pet peeves when it comes to your average Joe Strummer...well, more like "molten, irrational hatreds," really...

6) PIMPMOBILE.

5) GAS MASKS. I have never seen one of these rubber monstrosities used in a fashionable or appropriate context. It's always spiked hair, gas masks, a full body's worth of pointless and ugly tattoos and a cape. Here's a tip, kids: develop a theme, then clothe accordingly. Also, color coordinate, for christ's sake! And remember: RETARDED DOUCHEBAG IS NOT A THEME. IT'S A LIFESTYLE.

4) TALKING DURING THE SONG. Please, for the love of all that is musical and rad, shut the fuck up. I play this game for two reasons: 1) I want to engage in and enjoy the music, and 2) I happen to be pretty OK at it. When you blabber on and on in the middle of a track, you skullfuck those two reasons. Your idiotic gibbering not only prevents me from hearing all of the song clearly, but it also disrupts my concentration. Especially irritating when it's some sudden, profane outburst because you missed a note or twelve and TOTALLY FC THAT SONG ALL THE TIME FOREVER. Also, I don't care that you passed this or FC'd that or played what-have-you on [INSERT ACTUAL INSTRUMENT HERE]. I just want you to keep that gaping landfill you call a mouth closed and do your job, which is to rhythmically hit a sequence of colored Christmas lights. The more you speak, the more I want to play "Clouds Over California" on the bass pedal that is your face.

3) YOUR OBNOXIOUS SUPPORT OF AVENGED SEVENFOLD. I will admit, right now, that I am not a fan of Synyster Gates - god, it hurt me to type that - and the Police Officer and Colonel Mustard and whoever the hell else is in Avenged Sevenfold. I find their music, much like Green Day's, to be just left of listenable, endowed with a whiny aesthetic polished to a mirror shine by sleek production. Yes, these men with their inked-up arms, Hot Topic clothing and goofy pseudo-religious nicknames sure are hardcore. However, that having been said, there is no denying that, in a Rock Band context - or Guitar Hero, if you enjoy mediocre products, the Avenged Sevenfold songs are fun to play and sometimes rather challenging (here's looking at you, "Afterlife" solo). But that does not mean that, when given the opportunity to select the next song, you should pick "Almost Easy." For one, it's a disc song, and chances are very good that everyone in the group has played it over 9000 times. Two, if you're looking for a challenge, there are far harder songs available for your pathetic validation needs. Perhaps I just hate metalcore - this same sort of thing happens with All That Remains, I've found - but I should think that, in a game chock full of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and...yes, even Metallica...you have an infinite number of better choices when it comes to metal. Why settle?

Listen closely, you jerks. You nearly ruined "Welcome Home" for me back in 2007, and you've given me a strong distaste for "Down with the Sickness." I'm horrified to think of what you could do with "Bat Country."

2) DAFFODIL.

1) BEING POOR. Otherwise known as "not having any DLC." Sure, I've been lucky enough, financially and otherwise, to buy nearly 640 DLC tracks so far, but it's not as if the content is rare or expensive or of a poor quality. In fact, whiplash to the contrary. There are plenty of artists available with plenty of material, and it's all authored with a remarkable attention to detail, but you mean to tell me that you can't find even thirty or so songs that you'd be interested in playing? And that you don't even have the twenty free songs or "Still Alive," "Promised Land," et cetera, all of which - may I reiterate - are fucking free? That's just a willful ignorance of what makes Rock Band so damn good: the sheer, mind-bottling amount of material. It's true that the mechanics might get stale after a while, but fresh music and charts always reinvigorate them in my experience, especially debuts of artists and lesser-seen genres. If you don't have any DLC, I will avoid you under the category of "Doesn't Understand the Game," because that's precisely what you're doing.

Before we begin, I want to get a few things out of the way. I think that Rock Band & Guitar Hero have awesome POTENTIAL. I don’t just mean the evolution of the games’ software. When I say “potential” I am referring to each of these games’ potential ability to serve as a catalyst for the evolution of gaming hardware & accessories. Guitar Hero revolutionized the Video Game Accessory business, and of course I give it credit for that.

I am aware that playing Guitar Hero isn’t meant to be a substitution for the real thing. Guitar Hero & Rock Band are exactly what they say they are: Music-Simulation Video Games, that all people can play, from the tiniest little child, to the largest huskiest male or female. In regards to playability, as well as FeedFactor, both games get 2/2 in their respective categories. Guitar Hero & Rock Band introduce a variety of great music ranging from Classical Rock, to 80’s Hair Metal (WINGER!), all the way to today’s music of Weezer and Muse. So before I give my little rant here, I actually would like to take a moment to THANK each of these games’ designers because without you guys, this wonderful addition to the world of gaming would not exist.

Now here’s the rant. This is why I hate Rock Band & Guitar Hero: it’s because of THE PEOPLE WHO PLAY THE GAME. When Guitar Hero first came out, it was fun and everybody played it. The players could rock out, and strike that RockStar pose they’d been practicing in front of the mirror since middle school. That’s all well and good, but now that kids are being introduced to the game as adolescents, not as 20-somethings or older, they are mistaking playing Guitar Hero & Rock Band for playing REAL MUSIC. I can’t tell you how many times I hear people talking about music, in general and speaking as if they know what they are talking about because of their experiences with Guitar Hero & the minimal amount of supplemental data they received from lazily checking out Wikipedia. COME ON AMERICA. You people don’t play an instrument, but you think that you understand what it is like to be a musician. YOU DON’T. Until you actually sit down with a group of people, and play a real instrument, you have no motherfu-(sorry mom) clue what you are talking about.

Get a grip. Playing Rock Band does not make you a drummer. It makes you THINK you are a drummer, and you may appear to be a drummer on a SCREEN, but that does not affect any semblance of reality.  When you stand up from your stool, and you put your “custom made for the PS3″-acrylic drumsticks down, you go back to being Joe The DBag who didn’t understand anything about music in the first place. Please stop talking to me like you are familiar with musical terms, and with music in general. You can’t even tell me how many instruments are playing in half of the songs that are on Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Do you think that just because the available options to play are Drums, a Microphone, and 2 Guitars, that those are the only instruments that are being heard? Haaaayyyllls no. Musicians spend HOURS and DAYS and WEEKS overdubbing layers and layers of vocal tracks, and guitar tracks, and drum tracks. Rock Band & Guitar Hero are about as realistic to music, as The Sims is to REAL LIFE. Last time I checked, The Sims was meant to parody real-life, not imitate it in the most realistic manner. Well my friends, RB & GH are the same. They are meant to create a SIMULATED experience that is very far-fetched, and not even remotely close to the same thing as performing.

Er go, Rock Band/Guitar Hero, you have forever changed the face of console gaming, and for that I commend you, and I apologize for the harsh title and tone of this rant, but what I really mean, is that I hate many, many, many of your avid fans.  Guitar Hero and Rock Band are killing the efforts of hundreds of thousands of people who spend lifetimes toiling away at their craft.  It completely loses its value when other reviewers, as well as teenagers and kids, think that it is commonplace to be able to shred like Herman Li.  It is not.  Nobody on the planet, save for maybe 100-200 people, can play guitar like that.  Just because you have figured out the right color-buttons to press doesn’t make you a musician, or even remotely capable of playing music.  So?  Sit down, shut up, and actually try to play an instrument so you can see how different it is from this dumb-ass SIMULATION.

It's been a while since I have posted a blog so... ta-da!

Of course I have been keeping up with my non-stop Rock Band-age lately. I like to call it Rock Bandito, but that's neither here nor there. I recently bought Pearl Jam's Backspacer DLC album and it's pretty awesome. Some of those songs are a lot harder on drums than I would have expected. Also, "Just Breathe" on guitar is really tough for me. I'll get a review up on that soon I suppose.

The other game I have been spending time with recently is Torchlight. The forums have been ablaze lately (ablaze I say!) with topics about this game. Bottom line is I think the game is awesome. It really surprised me how much it feels like Diablo. I know the old Diablo guys worked on it and all but dude... it is SOO Diablo. I think anything I could say about it has already been said many times before so I'll just leave it at that. If you like dungeon crawlers, play this game. It's not without a couple faults but overall it's very worthwhile.

Here's a video I made of my first hour or so of playing. It already has over 7,000 views on Youtube in just a few days, which is awesome! Most views on one of my videos to date.

Until next time... Wakka wakka?

Hey Gamers!

Jamie and Matt here with a massive update from our gaming HQ here in Ottawa, Canada. Things have been really busy here as of late. Jamie and I both work on a Flu Pandemic floor at the local hospital and deal with large amounts of H1N1 (Swine Flu) Cases so we've been spending a lot of time at work. Other than that we've taken up some hiking (before Winter) and we're about to buckle down and do some hardcore studying for our Anatomy and Physiology University work.

We've got a massive Achievement Update list for you as well as some other exciting news that we'll get to at the end of the updates. So let's get to it!...You'll notice we've gotten pretty keen on the Guitar based 360 games on this update. They combine for the bulk of our updates but I promise that we're moving into new territory! You'll find out about it at the end of the blog!  (Cue Excitiement!)

You'll notice we've tried to re-organize our blog so please tell us what you think! Thanks!

New Games

We've picked up a few games this last update. A few from my birthday and birthday money and a few just for kicks.

Rock Band 2 (We won't be playing this until we complete as much of Rock Band 1 as we can)

Guitar Hero 5 + Guitar Bundle (A birthday present from Jamie)

Fallout 3: GOTY Edition (Just started this epic tale, expect it to be in lots of future updates, just arrived in Megaton for the first time)

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (It was 10 bucks, what could go wrong?)

New DLC

Crash Course (Left4Dead) I was hooked on Left4Dead on the PC (as you can see from my achievement page) but Jamie told me I should play with her and do a few run throughs. After finishing the original 4 campaigns we were thirsty for more and decided to squander some coin on the DLC. While short, the campaign was fun and exciting.

Survival Pack (Left4Dead) Threw some extra M$ Point at this one just for sake of having it. No extra achievement included but the constant stream of undead hordes make for easy pickings for the Zombie Genocidest achievmeent. Jamies just itching to get her Man vs Tank achievement in this one.

Just tried Band Hero Demo and Guitar Hero 5 Demo.  They are the same game, just different songs.  Is that the deal??  Band hero just has more family oriented music??  I don't know.  I'll stick with the Rock Band franchise.  GO HARMONIX!!

Ok, yeah. That title was all I got.

I've been achievement whoring.
I've been achievement whoring.
Anyway, what do you do during you long weekends? I prefer to spend it playing games. In fact, that's exactly what I did. I rented Dirt 2 for the week. I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it, because I'm not a huge racing game fan. The achievements are also fun, and quite easy. Which is good, because 3 weeks with no playing games makes you behind on your trophy score. Speaking of that, Sony, please fix the trophy problems! Please! I wanna see my achievements on Giantbomb! *Gets on knees and begs*

Just so you know how witty the achievements are, look at the two cups one girl thing. Why isn't there a one involving male drivers? I don't know, but it's just odd that they decided to throw that in there.

I also bought some Rock Band songs! Yay for a playing game that came out a year ago! Real quick list of songs I got:
  • Foo Fighters- All My Life
  • Foo Fighters- I'll Stick Around
  • Foo Fighters- Lonely As You
  • Tenacious D- Tribute
  • Tenacious D- Rock Your Socks
  • Jefferson Airplane- White Rabbit
  • Billy Idol- Rebel Yell
  • Gorillaz- Clint Eastwood
  • Gorillaz- Feel Good Inc.
  • Rush- YYZ (I know, I know. I'm very late.)

If you know me and my taste in music, you're shouldn't be surprised.

I've also been playing the Uncharted 2 beta with some friends. Got damn, that game is fun. I can't wait to play the full game!

I played a tiny bit of LittleBigPlanet with my neighbor. Co-op in that game is fun. Though, it gets tedious after a while.

Speaking of full games, Brutal Legend comes out today. If I had the money, I'd be out at the store instead of writing this cheap blog and playing the holy hell out of that game. But, I don't have the money, so I'll see if I can just rent it for now.

Until next time, peace!

AN ARTISTIC AND BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE OF THE HIGHEST REGARD!

Respect is easy to say but hard to demonstrate, one can say they respect a belief but showing that respect is a whole different matter. So when I finished experiencing the fourty-five strong setlist of The Beatles: Rock Band, I was left with a refreshing satisfaction that respect still shines brightly in the world of videogames. For Rock Band developers Harmonix Music Systems have shown nothing but absolute respect for everything the legendary fab four from Liverpool were about. The Beatles first ever adventure into videogames is more of an experience then anything any other music rhythm game as been, and sets a whole new standard for future band specific titles.

The Beatles music as never been more memorable and hypnotic then in the virtual form.
The Beatles music as never been more memorable and hypnotic then in the virtual form.
Now it would only be right by stating one obvious point before I discuss the finer details of this latest Rock Band game, if you don't like The Beatles then you probably shouldn't be that interested in this review, because the simple fact is The Beatles: Rock Band is all about the legendary four who stormed the 1960's and inspired so many popular artists of today. In this Harmonix have created not just a fitting tribute, but a whole new platform for a whole new generation of potential Beatlemaniacs. While it doesn't offer the strumming madness of say Guitar Hero: Metallica, it does offer a setlist that is as wonderful to experience as they are to play.

Which is the first important point to make, going into The Beatles: Rock Band. It's all to easy to jump the gun and expect the overall gameplay to be your common Rock Band experience and while in it rooted in the formula of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, it offers an almost uniquely personal and hypnotic enjoyment like no other game I've ever picked up a plastic guitar controller for. It's somewhat hard to explain in words, but once I finished the final song, I found myself both taken aback and chilled out by The Beatles music. I had a whole new respect for each member of the group, which is unique in it's own form.

For you see, once you near the end of the story mode and have played through a number of the iconic arenas made famous by the group. You'll know the finer techniques and methods of each member, with the most striking being the varied (and most challenging) music of George Harrison. Harrison's musical talents are vastly different from that of Paul, John and Ringo. This is not just in lyric form, for just playing a few of his featured tracks that were written and performed by George shows a clear difference between the much carmer and simpler tunes of John Lennon. The fact that I'm even talking about such a thing clearly shows the wonderful work put in by the developers and certain family members of the group, it all comes together and offers an whole new generation the chance to fall in love with The Beatles.

While gameplay is similar to past Rock Band games, both the music and three-way harmonies  keep the experience exciting.

As a music rhythm game it's rather standard for the most part, it follows the same gameplay format of hitting coloured notes traveling down on a track matching the music being played. It's common to most gamers, but defiantly doesn't feel old or worn out when your strumming along to Hello Goodbye or Come Together. There is a quickplay mode which allows you to quickly setup setlists to play with friends or on your own, there as been a few user interface improvements in this department and develops on the Rock Band formula well. The story mode can be played both on your own or with friends offline and online, while there doesn't seem a lot of 'meat' to the game. You'll definatly find yourself returning again and again just so you can experience the wonderful songs found throughout and one cannot forget the future downloadable content being added to the game.

Everything as been treated with care and respect, I mentioned that word eariler and it stands true in every way. While we all thought Neversoft's Guitar Hero: Metallica was a fine tribute towards the rock legends, Harmonix have took band specific music rhythm games to an whole new level and while the music itself plays an important part, it's actually the new three-way harmonies that stand out as a worthy and exciting new feature for the genre as a whole. The Beatles were famous for harmonizing on many of their tracks, so the fact that the developers have created such a fine simulated feature that feels so great when it all comes together, is an extra little treat. Three-way harmonizing now means that up to three drunk friends can sing along to 'Yellow Submarine' whenever they want and not feel like fools. Which is a great thing in itself, especially when harmonzing is done well.

While people have complained about a fourty-five song setlist, it's all to easy to forget that Guitar Hero: Metallica only featured twenty-five of the rock groups best songs with the rest being support groups to feature within the game. It's even tougher to complain when you consider that there is not one poor song within the whole game, all fourty-five songs just feel right especially if your a fan of the fab four. There not tough songs to play if you have experience in the genre, but that's not really the whole point. It's about an artistic and beautful experience both aurally and visually, it's one of the finest thrill rides in both videogaming and music. I haven't even touched upon the creative dreamscapes for The Beatles spell recording in Abbey Road, the unlockable wonders (including a simply wonderful Christmas sing-along with the group) and the fact that it features some of the finest virtual moustaches ever seen.

The Beatles: Rock Band won't revolutionize the rhythm genre, but it does set a new standard of excellence for future games.

It's colourful, it's bright and it's one of the best music games I've ever had the honour of putting in my console disc drive. If this is the only ever game that will feature the beautiful and timeless music from the lads from Liverpool, then I will be a happy man. It is more then a fitting tribute of what's good about the group, offering a tighter more developed experience that builds upon the Rock Band 2 formula. One can only hope that we eventually see some of these wise technical additions added to the standard franchise in an update of sorts. But from the hypnotic dreamscapes to an whole new appreciation for the music, it's an adventure like no other and offers an example of a uniquely personal sort of music rhythm game.

One that isn't based around how tough a song is to play, but more about how you feel when your playing it. I found myself both satisfied and chilled after experiencing The Beatles: Rock Band. It won't be for everyone, if your looking for the next 'Through The Fire and Flames' then you better venture on and look elsewhere, but if your looking for a return to the original concept of the music rhythm game as a chance for you appreciate music in a different form, then you'll do well by picking up The Beatles: Rock Band. One of the games of the year so far!
