If you're one of the many post-plastic rockers who, feeling a distinct sense of music genre malaise after so many years of clicky guitars and downloadable Miley Cyrus songs, found themselves unable to muster enough excitement to go out and purchase Rock Band 3 when it hit stores last year: congratulations. Your indifference toward one of the best games of last year has led to a tremendous discount for everyone. Way to go.

Harmonix today announced that going forward, all game-only copies of Rock Band 3 will be $20 at all major retailers, including the usual suspects like Amazon and Walmart. GameStop will probably get with the times eventually, but as of now, they're still selling for $49.99, because GameStop is jerks.

Incidentally, this new price puts Rock Band 3 $10 below the current retail price of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, a game that, despite being by all accounts dead, still continues to produce new DLC. Sort of like the part of the zombie brain that remains active and instinctively hungry for your money long after any identifiable humanity has ceased to be.

The disc part of this equation could be yours for the mere price of $19.99.
The disc part of this equation could be yours for the mere price of $19.99.

All Rock Band instruments are still sold separately--and appear largely undiscounted at this juncture--but with all the extra money you're not spending on a disc, maybe you can pony up for a keyboard and some brand-new downloadable Grand Funk Railroad and/or Joy Division songs. Or perhaps you could make up the difference with cheap copies of Green Day: Rock Band and one of the Rock Band Country Track Packs, each replete with exportable tracks. You'll create a playlist that's bound to confuse the hell out of everyone who attends your next Rock Band party, to be sure.

If you don't own a copy of Rock Band 3, or know someone who doesn't, now seems like the perfect time to get yourself or your stingy cohorts in on one of the best music games of all time. And I'm totally not saying that because I used to work for Harmonix, the developer of the Rock Band series. It's not like my name appears in the credits for that game, or anything. Who in their right mind would let a former Rock Band publicist write a news story ostensibly promoting the purchase of a game in that franchise? The very notion is utterly ludicrous, and not even worth thinking about, if you ask me.

I guess they made their money back on RB3 and at this point it's all profit, but still.

Shame about these games! I still really like plastic guitars. I would totally buy another Rock Band or maybe another Guitar Hero.

How come this is worthy of front page news? Many games have price drops but they aren't reported on yet this game is?

The price of the game itself doesn't really matter when they're still charging well over 100 for the pro guitars which are the only real way to play RB3.

Rockband still kicks ass. I bought it full price and have put more hours into that than any other game out there. I must have spent like 7 hours playing through the road tours again yesterday while doing laundry (There was a lot of laundry) So yeah let me just add to this and say that everyone should buy the most amazing rhythm game to date.

So if I continue my indifference will we eventually get paid to take copies of Rock Band? One way to find out!

But seriously, this is pretty cool, I just don't "get" rhythm games at all. That probably makes me a bad person, but I'm ok with that.

@Methodis: I agree, but it's not heinous. Harmonix and Giant Bomb have a healthy relationship, it seems to be fuelled (at least partly) by actual friendship rather than business, especially as Harmonix are fairly independent now. I'm all for alex promoting his mates in a funny way.

Can't tell if serious.......that game is not good. If you're going to get a Guitar Hero game go get Guitar Hero 5. That one was a solid entry.

As for this topic, I'm glad I got RB 3 when it came out, I kinda figured this would happen, I just didn't see the game selling all that well. I'm tempted to get the fender guitar to start playing pro mode, but the cymbals and stuff on my rock band 2 drums is keeping satiated on the extra hardware front. I LOVE ME SOME EXPERT PRO DRUMS......loads up Ride The Lightening

There wouldn't be as much bullshit comments if Brad wrote this up, maybe Alex was out and about, abusing people's moms.

I do agree with this, though. DJ Hero 2 has been heavily discounted, including the turn table. Damn shame people didn't pick this up because it's a solid game. I enjoyed the game almost as much as Rock Band.

If Activision had announced a DJ Hero 2 discount at a time when I was writing news for Giant Bomb, I'd have happily written it up. DJ Hero 2 is excellent.

I sort of wish all this fucking music games would die.  They refuse to really innovate and just produce the same shit over and over.  The proof is in the market which is now totally saturated with these styles of games and yet nobody has given a shit for the past two years.  I wonder how many sales are actually made for the DLC of these games now--surely not enough to justify burying all the new and slightly more original content coming out.

Except for all the other ways you can play it, of course.

Canadian stores that have it at $20: Best Buy, EB/GameStop, probably most others before long.
