Hey all!

I was curious if there was any interest in doing a Giant Bomb Cup. It would be a Rocket League tournament set up to be in the same format as the FIFA World Cup.

Ideally we would have 32 teams, but we could figure out a way to make it work if it was less than that. Each team would consist of 3 players. The teams would be placed into 8 groups of 4. The top 2 teams from each group would move to the knockout stage, where it would be a single elimination bracket until there is one team left.

The tie breaker in the group stage would be total number of goals scored in the group stage. If that is also a tie, then it would be the number of goals conceded. If that is also a tie, it would come down to a coin flip.

We could wait until Cross Play is enabled so that we would be able to maximize our player count with both PC and PS4. Or if there is enough interest, we could do separate tournaments for the different platforms. We would also have people stream the matches on Twitch (or whatever streaming platform you prefer) so that the community can watch the matches.

This was an idea I came up with today while watching the Us vs. Them video, so if it is dumb, let me know. But I wanted to run this idea by the community. It seems like this is a popular game right now, and I thought this would be a fun thing for the community to do.

The matches are short enough that I think we would certainly be able to do it. When we did the Hearthstone tournament, there was a lot of cushion as to when the games could be played to allow for everyone's schedules to work with it.

I'd love to participate in this. Rocket League is the first multiplayer game I'm actually pretty good at. I'd be on the Steam side of things if you want to keep a tally of the player base.

I'd be up for that, but I'm playing on PC and I'm guessing most people are on PS4 since it's free with PS+. And there's not currently a way to play in a party cross-platform (although the devs are supposed to be adding that functionality).

I'd be in for the pc tournament. It's likely to be at least a couple of weeks before cross-play invites are working, btw.

A tiny bit of advice to you OP, don't go with 32 teams. As someone who has organised this kind of thing on these forums before, most people who say they'll join something won't turn up. Especially as it's the first one, keep the numbers smaller so you can control is better. I don't own this game, or a PS4, but good luck dude!

However, I'm going to go ahead echo some of the concerns about 32 teams being too many. You should back it off to something that'll be easier to manage.

I'd play and totally try not to completely lose it for whoever wants to put me on their team.

Yeah, I had a few beers last night, so I was like "32 teams is totally doable!" I'm glad to see a lot of people are interested. I'll get something set up in the next few days as a way for players to sign up.
