I still wouldn’t be surprised if Rocksteady Studios was soon revealed as a two-game studio also prepping a Superman game (that's just me musing, by the way), but even if that’s not true, Variety’s report about the Batman: Arkham City developer working on another Batman game, this time set in the Silver Age, is exciting.

It’s just a rumor right now, but Hollywood trade Variety isn’t your average outlet, so take this one with more than a grain of salt.

The next Batman game is reportedly “highly stylized” and focuses on the first meeting between Batman and The Joker. Actor Mark Hamill has famously voiced Rocksteady’s take on The Joker in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, but Luke Skywalker has emphatically said he wouldn’t return for another game.

The Silver Age saw the original debut of the Justice League of America. Introducing more characters in a game would coincide with DC Comics’ ambitions to follow in Marvel’s footsteps and eventually have its characters united on the silver screen.

It's expected other super heroes would show up. Metropolis, for example, was mentioned several times in Arkham City, and Rocksteady has been known for hiding secrets in plain sight about its next game.

Seconded!

Also, this could be a very cool idea. Sorta reminds me of that Batman/Planetary crossover where they kept running into all the different Batman versions.

Also, this sounds like a fantastic idea, I just hope that either Mark Hamill changes his mind, or the replacement is dead on.

If this means more Aquaman, especially a gritty, awesome version, then I'm all for it.

Also, who are we kidding, Hamill will come back if the script is good enough.

I did now.. I'm ashamed of myself because I feel like disemboweling others who ask questions that can be answered by a simple search. I should just die.

I agree with this! They do know the whole reason their last game worked was because

the Joker died at the end, right? Bringing him back again just convinces me they're gonna weasel out of their promise and Lazarus Pit that dude in Arkham 4.

Hope things are approaching normality, Patrick.

Hmm I have to admit it, first time ever an article was posted by Klepek that I couldn't tell it was him before clicking the link. Big improvement that. It will be interesting to see a Silver Age batman story though, I wonder if they will remain faithful to it and eschew the current "popular" bat who is far grittier and darker... Let's hope so.

I like the current Batman bunches but a fresh take will help the game series remain new and hopefully allow them to avoid becoming cliche. Not to mention the insanity that they can bring if they REALLY dig into the silver age...

#31 Posted by 2HeadedNinja (1072 posts) - 10 months, 14 days ago

I'm not sure if I'm down with that. They made two kickass games so I will give everything they do a shot, but tbh, I don't really like the silver age version of batman, neither in style nor in tone.

And: Welcome back Patrick

This sounds great. Haven't played Arkham City yet, but I loved Arkham Asylum, and I think they could do wonderful things with the Batman of a whackier time. A Zurr-En-Arrh level would blow my mind.

"Rocksteady has been known for hiding secrets in plain sight about its next game"

Oh you mean those transcoded secret radio frequencies, the hidden freighter cargo bay and a bunch of other Arkham City easter eggs that quite clearly point to Scarecrow as a major antagonist for the next game? Doesn't necessarily exclude this theory but it seems fishy.

#37 Posted by Master_Funk (642 posts) - 10 months, 14 days ago

Yay Patrick.

I think this is awesome. Don't really need another super dark batman game, and it'll be interesting to see how rocksteady can change their formula to incorporate this shift in setting.

Doing camp well is a very delicate art. I wouldn't advise Rocksteady to go in this direction, but if they do it right, it could be incredible.

Welcome back, Patrick! Hope you're doing well.

Anyways, I don't fucking know about this... Like... if this was just a separate thing from the Arkham games, like... not even in the same "continuity" or whatever, that'd be fine. Sure. But if this is just a straight prequel, then it's just going to feel like them cowarding out of moving their story ahead and dealing with what they established in the ending of Arkham City.

I'm sure it'll be good, but it'll feel so fucking uninspired.

Also, if Hamill ain't coming back, get John Dimaggio back in the booth. He was fucking great in Under the Red Hood.
