Royce is the son of  Helio Gracie, the originator of Brazilian Jujitsu. Royce learnt his trade under the watchful eyes of his father and older brothers. Royce received  his black belt at the age of 18. Royce is now a 7th degree red and black belt.

Royce Gracie was chosen by the Gracie family to enter the original UFC tournament, rather than Rickson, his much stronger and more skilled older brother. At 175 pounds, with a frame much smaller than his opponents, the Gracie family felt that  Royce would be the perfect fighter to demonstrate the claims that  Jujitsu techniques  could be used to over come a much larger opponent.   Royce Gracie defeated the 6- foot-5  220 pound
Savate World Champion Gerard Gordea, in the finals of the tournament, cementing his name in MMA history.

Royce Gracie continued his winning streak, obtaining a submission victory  over American Kickboxer Patrick Smith, winning  the second UFC tournament. Royces final victory in the UFC was against fellow Hall of Famer Dan Severn.  the match lasted 16 minutes (there were no rounds or time limits at the time).  After being pinned under the 260 pound wrestler for most of the fight, Royce was able to lock his legs into a triangle choke for a submission victory.
