Well today is Sailor Moon's birthday (June 30th), as well as her daughter's, Rini or Sailor Mini Moon. Just thought I shall write a blog about it since it's my all-time favourite anime ever. So here is some information about the anime:

The protagonist of Sailor Moon, Usagi Tsukino (Serena Tsukino), lives as an ordinary middle school girl until she is found by a talking cat named Luna. Through Luna, Usagi learns that the world is about to be attacked by a Dark Kingdom that had appeared once before, long ago, and destroyed the kingdom of the moon. Her dormant powers are then awakened to defend the Earth against the coming onslaught, and she is led to a number of friends who join her in the battle.

Usagi fights using the identity of Sailor Moon, and as the story progresses she learns more and more about the enemies which face her and the evil force that is sending them. Gradually she discovers the truth about her own past life, her destined true love, and the possibilities for the future of the Solar System.

It was never broadcast on TV where I live, but it was out right when I was really getting into anime, so I wanted to see it.

I downloaded one of the TV or movie intros on dial up, took about 3 hours for a few minutes of sub 480i video.  Those were the days.

Yeah I watched the series in subs. Whoever did Sailor Moons/Serenas voice in the dubbed series wasn't all that good, it often left me with a headache. Lol. xD

Bring on the SM/DBZ hentai :D

That's why the Japanese versions are always better."

Japanese versions always have all the sex, blood, and violence still intact.  Dubs usually bend them over and make everything all kiddie, like One Piece.

I believe Fox actually had this for a very brief time when I was a teen.  It was my first exposure to anime, and made me seek out more, which I got via Sci-Fi channels Saturday Anime.  Which brought me to my second anime and first full length anime movie, Iria: Zeiram The Animation.  So I guess I owe Sailor Moon for being a gateway to something pretty awesome.

Happy Birthday, Usagi!  I was a huge fan of the series when it ran on US TV stations, and I read some of the manga when I was still collecting comics.

I'm strongly considering finding the fansubs of the series and checking it out as soon as I finish the 400+ episodes of One Piece I am working through now.  Much like the above mentioned censoring for Sailor Moon, the English dub of One Piece that ran on the Cartoon Network was heavily edited for language, graphic violent, sexual content and religious references.  I'll be interested in seeing how far the censoring was in Sailor Moon.  I expect it's about as bad as the early run of Dragon Ball which had some relatively mild stuff cut out because Moms and Pops across America have a heart attack when a cartoon challenges a viewer to think like a reasonably mature person.
