Sam & Max go to visit Bosco and find that he is selling his latest Boscotech invention, an organic listening device for $10 million. To earn the money Sam & Max travel back to the casino and try to beat Leonard Steakcharmer at cards. However, he keeps winning and is sure that he will never lose a game. The pair realise that he is cheating and give him a taste of his own medicine, causing him to lose all his earnings (10 million casino chips) to them, which they use to pay Bosco. It turns out the Boscotech device is actually a beetle who can repeat anything he hears. Sam & Max use this beetle to find out the password to the back room. Once inside they are greeted by Chuckles, a senior mafia member who will let them join if they complete three tasks.
Task 1
Their first task is to place one of the mafia's teddy bears in Bosco's Inconvenience store. This is not as easy as it sounds, because Bosco has a security device called B-TADS 2 which removes products that are not part of his normal stock. Realising they need to get rid of the camera, Sam & Max go back to the casino to play a game of Whack Da Ratz. They beat the game and win a teddy bear magnet, which gives Sam an idea. He goes back to Bosco's and distracts him by pointing to the mafia member outside his shop (who is there to make sure Sam & Max complete their task). While Bosco is looking out the window, Sam places the magnet on the security camera, causing it to get confused and throw itself out, allowing Sam to put the teddy bear on display in the store.
With all three tasks are complete, Sam & Max are now official members of the Toy Mafia. However, they discover that Ted E. Bear is actually the mole they came looking for, who has changed sides. Realising the bad situation they are in, Sam & Max run to their DeSoto for a speedy escape, but the Toy Mafia pursue them. Sam & Max cause the mafia to crash and return back to the casino the serve justice on Ted E. Bear.
The two return to a seemingly empty casino. They go the back room and through a door which they were denied access to before. They find themselves in a production room, with hypnotic teddy bears being created in large quantities. Ted E. Bear notices Sam & Max and attempts to hypnotize them, not knowing that both of them are immune to such trickery. The mole orders Sam to shoot Max, which he does, but instead using the cap gun that they stole from Leonard. Max then fakes his own death (overacting slightly), leaving it up to Sam to find a way to stop production. He replaces a voice box in one of the bears with that of the One Armed Bandit, and uses it to hypnotize Ted E. Bear into thinking he is on fire. Ted stumbles over the fire extinguisher, but Sam sucks him up with the machinery, causing it to jam and the factory to explode. Far away in the rubble of the casino, Secret Agent Chuckles says into his talking device that they need to switch to Plan B.
Sam & Max's third case of Season One sees them finding out what happened to a mole who was sent into Ted E. Bear's Mafia-Free Playland and Casino, but has suddenly gone quiet.
Story
The Commisiner had recently sent a undercover agent into Ted E. Bear's Mafia-Free Playland and Casino, but the mole had suddenly stopped sending news back. Sam & Max get given the job of finding out what happened by becoming members of the Toy Mafia. The anthropomorphic dog and hyperkinetic rabbity thing travel to the casino to find that it isn't Mafia-Free as the title suggests, as the workers there aren't hiding their guns or personal qualities particually well. They notice a door at the back which is guarded and requires a password for entry. Realising they need to get in the back room, Sam & Max try to find a way to get the password.Sam & Max go to visit Bosco and find that he is selling his latest Boscotech invention, an organic listening device for $10 million. The second task for the Freelance Police to carry out is to kill Sybil Pandemik as she is a court witness to one of the mafia's operations. Obviously not wanting to kill their friend, Sam takes Sybil's coffee cup and fills it up with tomato ketchup from Bosco's dispenser. He then places it back on Sybil's table, and shoots it with his gun when she picks it up to take a drink, causing the shock to knock Sybil out and sauce to fly all over her, giving the illusion that she has just been shot. Max then eats the camera (yes, really) that the mafia are using to spy on Sybil so that they don't see her wake up.Task 3
The final task Sam & Max must complete is to recover Ted E. Bear's original meatball sandwich, which has been stolen. They look around their neighbourhood, but when they return to their office they discover Leonard Steakcharmer making a sandwich-related deal with Jimmy Two Teeth. Leonard holds Sam & Max at gunpoint, but Max points out that it is a cap gun, takes Steakcharmer's weapon and ties him up. The pair torture Leonard with "Yo Momma" jokes, causing him to burst out that he left the sandwich in the slot machine at the casino, but had taken the arm so no-one could use it. Sam takes the arm, puts it back on the machine and collects the sandwich. With all three tasks are complete, Sam & Max are now official members of the Toy Mafia. However, they discover that Ted E. Trivia
- Leonard Steakcharmer looks very similar to Boris from Telltale Texas Hold'em. Sam & Max tell him "you look more like a Boris Krinkle", while in Texas Hold'em, Boris Krinke was told that he looks more like a Leonard Steakcharmer.
- The Whack Da Ratz minigame in the casino is clearly based around that of the one in Sam & Max Hit the Road.
- Sam asks Bosco "Do you have any hats in the shape of a cow udder?", a reference to a character in Bone: The Great Cow Race who wears a cow udder shaped hat.
- Being able to join a group once three tasks are complete is common in adventure games, with examples such as The Secret of Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer.
