Samurai Shodown V Special (known in Japan as Samurai Spirits Zero Special) is a 2D fighting game developed by Yuki and released by SNK for arcades (running Neo Geo MVS hardware in Japan only) on April 22, 2004 and the Neo Geo AES worldwide on July 9, 2004.
An enhanced update of the original Samurai Shodown V, Samurai Shodown V Special is known as the last official game released for the Neo Geo hardware.
Along with minor changes for most characters, the game adds the three bosses from previous games as playable characters (Amakusa, Mizuki, and Zankuro), the main boss as a playable character (Gaoh), the removal of two mid-bosses (Sankuro and Yumeji), tweaked commands for certain abilities, and new Fatality effects (including a new special move used to finish off opponents mid-battle). The AES version received censorship regarding the more violent Fatality effects, causing some glitches that required a recall of the cartridge.
Unlike previous main installments in the series, Samurai Shodown V Special received no ports or re-releases.
