Samus Aran is the protagonist of the Metroid series of videogames set in a futuristic fictional universe. She is a intergalactic bounty hunter whose missions in the series send her to hunt down the evil Space Pirate organization and to combat the threat of the life-sucking race known as Metroids that the Space Pirates are attempting to turn into weapons.
Origin, Legacy and Future
When Samus was three years old, her home colony, the space-station K-2L was attacked by the universe-wide terrorist organization known as the Space Pirates. They killed nearly everyone on the station, save for the young Samus, who was placed into an escape pod and ejected towards the nearest inhabitable planet, Zebes. There, she was found by a sentient bird-like race known as the Chozo, who took her back to one of their settlements on the planet, in order to care for her. However, the planet's conditions were too harsh for any normal human to venture outside of the Chozo's heavily sheltered settlements for any extended period of time. Thus, the Chozo decided to infuse the young Samus with their own blood, in a mysterious ritual giving her the enhanced physical abilities necessary to be able to survive in the planet's harsh environment.
After the ritual was completed, Samus was seen as a true Chozo child by the rest of the race, and was thereafter given the same treatment and strict training regime as all young Chozo warriors. Samus took exceptionally well to this training and eventually became known as one of the Chozo's finest warriors. At the age of fourteen, Samus was given the same right of passage as all trainee Chozo warriors and was fitted with her own power suit. Soon after, she set out into the universe to find her own way in life. Driven by the murder of her parents, Samus quickly enlisted herself as a soldier in the government of the universe, the Galactic Federation, where she served for a few years under Commander Adam Malkovich.
Eventually, Samus left the military and continued using her skills as a freelance bounty hunter. The Metroid series tracks her adventures, often involving the Space Pirates, and always involving the threat known as Metroids. As a strange twist of fate, in Metroid: Fusion, she is innoculated against the infection of the X-Parasite by scientists using DNA from the infant metroid she recovered at the end of Metroid II.
Samus's past is expected to be explored in more detail in the upcoming Metroid: Other M. The game appears to be taking a much more narrative-driven approach, and at least part of the game seems to be set during Samus's time serving under Adam Malkovich.
Samus's physical appearance has changed several times over the years. When she appears without her suit at the end of the original Metroid, she appears to be a brunette, though if the player is playing through the game with her "suitless" appearance, her coloration will change depending on what suit she has equipped. Later games established her now canon blonde-haired, blue-eyed appearance. The specific style of her hair has also varied from game to game. Her appearance in Metroid: Zero Mission, however, established a distinctive ponytail that she has worn in all Metroid games following Zero Mission's release. Similarly, in all games released prior to Zero Mission, Samus is depicted wearing various forms of two-piece bikini-like outfits when not in her power suit. In Zero Mission and all games following, Samus's out-of-armor appearance has been standardized with her Zero Suit.
Over the years, Samus has become one of Nintendo's most well-known protagonists and has appeared in numerous games outside of the Metroid series. She has appeared in every entry of the Super Smash Bros. series to date, and her games are often subjects of microgames seen in the WarioWare series. Samus has also made numerous cameo apperances in games such as Tetris, F-1 Race, and Super Mario RPG.
Throughout the Metroid series, Samus has worn a variety of Suits and used a variety of different weapon and support systems. Each suit has its own properties, providing such things as extreme temperature resistence, the removal of movement restriction while under water, and resistence to a deadly material called Phazon.
These are some of the items that have appeared in Samus's repetoire over the years.

Samus is a bounty hunter armed with a power suit featuring a number of advanced technologies built into it. She hunts aliens called the "Space Pirates" and energy-draining alien parasites called "Metroids," while attempting to complete missions given by the Galactic Federation.

Samus's physical appearance has changed several times over the years. When she appears without her suit at the end of the original Metroid, she appears to be a brunette, though if the player is playing through the game with her "suitless" appearance, her coloration will change depending on what suit she has equipped. Other Appearances
Samus's Suits
Throughout the Metroid series, Samus has worn a variety of Suits and used a variety of different weapon and support systems. Each suit has its own properties, providing such things as extreme temperature resistence, the removal of movement restriction while under water, and resistence to a deadly material called Phazon.
Power Suit
Samus's main piece of equipment is her suit of armor, dubbed the Power Suit. It is a suit of extremely advanced armor, built and given to her by her adopted parent race, the Chozo. It is so advanced that it is compatible with any weapon system ever made or ever to be made. Among it's various weaponry and abilities are various visors (Scan Visor, X-Ray Visor, Thermal Visor, Echo Visor, Dark Visor and Command Visor), multiple beam types (standard Power beam, Ice Beam, Plasma, Wave, Dark, Light, Annihalator, Nova, Spazer), missiles (up to 255 at one time), Super Missiles, and a Grapple Beam (acting as a whip-like object to swing across chasms). It also has the ability to turn into a spherical ball called the Morph Ball in order for Samus to enter small inaccessible gaps, as well as allowing her to drop Morph Ball Bombs and Power Bombs, heavy ordnance only usable in this form.Varia Suit
The Varia Suit is Samus' most recognizable suit, sporting heavier armor and larger shoulder pads than the basic Power Suit. The Varia suit increases Samus' defensive capabilities, as well as enabling her to survive in extreme temperatures. Samus, in her Varia Suit, is a starring character in the Super Smash Bros. franchise, appearing in every game to date.Gravity Suit
The Gravity Suit is a upgrade to Samus's power suit and allows Samus to not be affected by gravity underwater, allowing her to run as fast and jump as high she would be able to in a normal environment. The gravity suit is represented as a purple colored variation of Samus' normal suit in-game.Phazon Suit
The Phazon Suit appears in the game Metroid Prime. The Phazon Suit is a result of Samus's power suit being corrupted by Phazon. Samus gains this suit upgrade after defeating theOmega Pirate boss. The Omega Pirate collapses onto Samus, covering her suit in the Phazon that created the unnaturally powerful Space Pirate. Once infused with Phazon, her Power Suit becomes the Phazon Suit. The Phazon Suit allows immunity to blue Phazon, however it does not protect her against the more powerful orange Phazon found in the final area of the game. The Phazon Suit appears as a black, silver, and red variation of the power suit. Through ripping this suit upgrade from Samus, the Metroid Prime is able to live on after its defeat as Dark Samus.
Dark Suit
The first suit that Samus acquires in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The Dark Suit allows Samus to greater withstand the corrosive atmosphere of Dark Aether, as well as providing more defense against the dark energies of the Ing .Light Suit
The Light Suit is the final suit Samus acquires in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The Light Suit provides her with immunity to Dark Aether's corrosive atmosphere, as well as allowing her to enter beams of light to be transported into secret and otherwise inaccessible areas.PED Suit
When Samus is touched by Dark Samus' corruptive influence in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, her body starts to naturally produce Phazon. To regulate this Phazon to stop it from killing her, the Galactic Federation modify her Power Suit with a PED (Phazon Enhancement Device), allowing Samus to enter Hypermode and use the Phazon coursing through her as a powerful weapon. Misuse of this power, however, can lead to Samus being corrupted and coming under control of Dark Samus in an alternate game over.Fusion Suit
When Samus was attacked by the X Parasite on SR388 in Metroid: Fusion, Galactic Federation scientists had to strip away much of her power suit and fuse her with Metroid DNA in order to combat the parasite and save her life. The result made Samus part-Metroid, allowing her to use the Metroids ability to absorb the X Parasites.Zero Suit
Samus sometimes leaves her power suit to become Zero Suit Samus. In early games, she wore a blue or orange bikini, but in recent games, she has been shown in a blue-skintight bodysuit. As Zero Suit Samus, Samus is weaker, but faster. She carries a laser gun that doubles as a laser whip that she can use to stun her foes. Although Samus has been shown with part of her suit taken off at at least one part of every Metroid game, players only get to play as Zero Suit Samus in Metroid: Zero Mission. Players can also play as Zero Suit Samus in the popular Nintendo Fighting game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.Samus's Items and Weapons
These are some of the items that have appeared in Samus's repetoire over the years.
Long Beam
This beam allowed Samus to fire her shots at a greater distance.Ice Beam
This beam would freeze most enemies in place, allowing Samus to even use them as a platform to reach new areas. This beam was also the primary weakness to the Metroids.Wave Beam
This beam could be fired through walls to hit enemies on the other side of them. In some games, wave beam could be used to power up certain devices.Charge Beam
Samus could use this to charge up her normal shot to a power shot as well as charging up any other beam to become a more powerful version of that beam.Spazer Beam
This beam split into 3 beams giving the shot a much wider area of effect.Plasma Beam
This was a very powerful beam able to cut through most enemy defenses. In some games, plasma beam could be used to melt objects to clear a path.Morph Ball
Samus has the unique ability to shrink herself into a ball to access certain areas. While in ball form, she can use a multitude of moves and items such as bombs, magnet, spring, etc.Screw Attack
Probably her most recognizable and deadly move in her arsanal. She will do multiple somersaults in midair and at this time her suit will let off a massive amount of electricity destroying just about anything in her path.Grappling Beam
This beam stay tethered to Samus and will attaching to something with hooks, clasp, or anything else that the beam can grab. While she has something attached to her beam, she can either swing off of it to reach a new area or pull on it to yank off a protective enemy shield or some sort of obstruction.X-Ray Vision
She can switch her visor to X-ray to allow her to see through walls, doors, or just about anything else blocking her vision. This could allow Samus to find secret passages, secret items, or even show Samus the weakpoint of an enemy.Bombs
While in morph ball form, Samus can lay bombs. These bombs could open up passages in walls, damage enemies, or even fling Samus upwards.Power Bomb
While in morph ball form, Samus can lay a Power Bomb. These bombs would cause a vastly bigger explosion and could damage most enemies that the regular bombs couldn't, destroy certain walls that normal bombs could'nt, and open certain doors that could only be opened with the power bombs.Spring Ball
This could allow Samus to jump while in ball form without the aid of bombs.Spider/Magnet Ball
Spider ball would allow Samus to climb up any wall while in ball form. Magnet ball would only allow Samus to climb up magnetic tracks.Boost Ball
Samus can use this to charge up while in ball form. Using this charge, she was gain a speed boost which could be used to damage certain enemies, powering up a generator, or even going up and down a halfpipe to reach new areas.Samus Aran games
