A Great Adventure
Sanitarium was a great adventure game for its time. It didn't stand out graphically, and the gameplay was pretty standard for 1998, but the story and environments made it well worth a playthrough.
At the beginning of the game, you wake up in an abandoned, run-down insane asylum. The rest of the game is spent discovering who you are, how you came to be in the sanitarium, and more importantly, what is real and what isn't. This journey of discovery will take you through the sanitarium (both when it was operational and when run-down), a small country town, and a traveling circus.
While the game was not a technical juggernaut, the story really shined. It had elements of Stephen King's It and Children of the Corn, and appears to have influenced later games such as Max Payne.
Unfortunately, Sanitarium hasn't aged well, so gamers won't get the same experience from it playing it today. For those who had a chance to play it when it was first released, it was a memorable gaming experience.
