How do the shop items work?

How do the shop items work?

So I was playing the game and I can't figure out what certain items do. How do I check a description on what the item effects?

I'm just going on memory here but I believe they give you stat boosts to your stamina, strength, etc. and it will tell you how much is added once you buy the item. Some give you health and guts too. I don't think you can know what items do in-game until you buy them. There are places online where you can find out, though.
