    Overview

    Sega Rally Championship (also known as Sega Rally Championship 1995) is a 3D rally racing game developed by Sega's AM3 division and released by Sega for arcades (using their Sega Model 2 hardware) on January 1995.

    Based on the sport of rally racing, Sega Rally Championship is unique for its more accurate simulation of multiple track surfaces. It also features the point-to-point single-lap system of traditional rally racing, four courses (one of which is a bonus track), and three licensed cars that can be used (the Toyota Celica GT-Four, the Lancia Delta HF Integrale, and the hidden Lancia Stratos HF). It later received two main sequels: Sega Rally 2 in 1998 and Sega Rally 3 in 2008.

    The game was later ported by Sega's CS division to the Sega Saturn in Japan and North America on December 28, 1995, with a later European release on January 24, 1996. Although it is less graphically intensive as the arcade version, it features a replay system, car tuning, and two-player split-screen multiplayer. This version later received two region-specific re-releases: Sega Rally Championship Plus (released in Japan on September 26, 1996) and Sega Rally Championship: NetLink Edition (released in North America on August 5, 1997). Both re-releases feature online multiplayer support (with XBAND for the Plus version and NetLink for the NetLink Edition). The Saturn version was also used as the basis for the PC port on January 1997 (titled Sega Rally Championship PC in Japan).

    The game was later ported to the PlayStation 2 in 2006 as a special bundle with Japanese versions of Sega Rally 2006. Two mobile games (one for the Game Boy Advance and one for the Nokia N-Gage) were released with the name, but they are ports of Sega Rally 2.

    A special version of this game, Sega Rally: Special Stage, was released in 1996 as an attraction at Sega's Joypolis venues. It features a full-scale car controller (modelled after the Celica).
