Grasshopper Manufacture's recently unveiled Shadows of the Damned is being billed as a "psychological action thriller" by its publisher EA, but the same marketing materials make it sound like more of an action-heavy revenge title. Shadows of the Damned, according to a recent press release, revolves around the exploits of a leather-clad biker named Garcia. He's a demon killer who is tasked with rescuing his girl after demons with some displaced humours snatch her. Promises of over-the-top action have been made, in addition to "gruesome" boss battles, both of which will require the powers of light to combat.

Shadows of the Damned is being co-created by No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda and Resident Evil brain Shinji Mikami. You can see the influence of the latter specifically in the game's in over-the-shoulder perspective, which is similar to that of Resident Evil 4. And while man-on-demon combat seems to be the game's true focus, there will be other things to do. The aforementioned press release makes a special mention of "demented puzzles" being incorporated into the game.

== TEASER =="With Shadows of the Damned, gamers will fight for love in the most difficult arena imaginable… hell," said Mikami said in a statement. "Players will find themselves surrounded by demons set on destroying their heart and soul. Only the strong will survive."

Shadows of the Damned is slated for a summer 2011 release on the Xbox 360 and PS3. As Kotaku notes in its announcement article, this game appears to be the very one EA mentioned back in August 2008 when it teased a Suda and Mikami co-created horror title.

Demented puzzles are the only puzzles worth puzzling.

ANYWAYS! SUPER FUCKING HYPED!!!!!

SUDA 51!! Definitely one of my fav. developers.

Also, oh shit... I forgot to buy No More Heroes 2 when that came out...
I should probably do that...

Edit: also just saw that Mikami is working with Suda on this one...
if this is anything like God Hand, I will be a happy duder.

Could be great. Don't disappoint Suda 51!

#9 Posted by JohnRabbit (102 posts) -

every name in that trailer should generate excitement (mikami, suda, yamaoka) but this looks utterly generic.

#10 Posted by Korne (625 posts) -

Suda 51 needs to get back on track with a new franchise (I really didn't like NMH2).
#11 Posted by miva2 (226 posts) -

weird maincharacter but i'll probably learn to like him.
must buy!

Shame it's only coming to consoles. The game looked like it would be interesting.

Looks like a crazy RE4.

Sweet

This game looks pretty sweet, and the influences are just all over the board. I had to go back and check to make sure I saw the EA brand attached to it, because at first light it has a very Capcom vibe coming from it. Resident Evil, maybe a little DMC thrown in for good measure, I think you could even make a case for stylistic similarities to Bayonetta... The comparisons go on from there I'm sure.

Its like Desperado meets From Dusk Till Dawn with a little Devil May Cry Sprinkled in for CRAZY flavor. My God........

Looks great, sounds great, and looks to play great. But man, the game needs a better name. Amiright? :|

#20 Posted by Olivaw (1215 posts) -

They've also got the sound designer from Silent Hill.

So this game is gonna be at least four different kinds of fucked up.

Love it.

When I first saw this I thought his face looked weird when he spoke, guess I got used to it. Gameplay looks ResidentEvil4ish, that is to say, pretty alright.

I am mostly positive about the stuff this game seems to do.

Am I the only one excited for Akira Yamaoka?

#23 Posted by Kenshiro28 (68 posts) -
@xyzygy:  I totally lost my shit when I saw his name. Hot damn! I'm pre-ordering this one!

Looks like a generic 3rd person shooter. So this is the best the Japanese can do to try and appeal to a western audience?

#25 Posted by Shaka999 (499 posts) -

AKIRA YAMAOKA with Suda???? Oh man I'm sold.

#26 Posted by Romination (2777 posts) -

I'm usually down for anything that's working with Suda.

#27 Posted by Milkman (17316 posts) -

Yo, it seems like this game was made in Japan. Confirm or deny?

#28 Posted by Blood_for_the_blood_God (300 posts) -

someone needs to add this to the absinthe page

#29 Posted by Junpei (763 posts) -

Shinji Mikami, Suda 51 AND Akira Yamaoka... I'd buy that sight unseen...

I know, right? You could totally tell from the six seconds of in-game footage that the game was generic.

And what's up with Portal 2? I saw six seconds of that, and it just looked like a generic first-person shooter. Is that the best Valve are capable of producing these days?
#31 Posted by Paulrus (244 posts) -

Looks slightly generic, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh (in a good way) watching this. Absinthe vending machines for the win.

#32 Posted by ChernobylCow (238 posts) -

Sometimes Japan can be the win.

#33 Posted by the_messenger (19 posts) -

Hope this is a good time!

#34 Posted by Skwire (15 posts) -

The game looks interesting.

#35 Posted by Undeadpool (4997 posts) -

Let Mikami do the gameplay and SUDA do the story and we might just have one helluva crazy-ass game.

You had me Music by Akira Yamaoka.

I would like to point out that the man at 0:50 is totally the RE4 merchant.

This could be a fun guilty pleasure game.

@Icemael: Insulting any piece or part of Japenese culture is a very effective way at drawing the wild Wapanese out into the open. Once surrounded, the wild Wapanese will take a very aggressive stance, displaying his irrational defence  for his outdated and inferior form of hobby. Do not tempt the wild Wapanese any further though; once out of control, it can destroy entire forums, even large blocks of the internet. Even still, the wild Wapanese allows us great insight into the life of those species that have clung dearly to their old ways.

@RsistncE: Encyclopedia Dramatica bullshit. The last line of defense for idiots when confronted about their idiocy.

Suda goes from doing Tarantino-esque games to Robert Rodriguez?  Nice.

Trolls be trolling. I love Giantbomb because there is no arguments or trolls.. and then I notice people arguing and am afraid for the future of this online community.

@RsistncE is being foolish, making such assumptions and generalisations.
#46 Posted by Sarcastic_Fleeze (10 posts) -

Props on them for going with a lead character who isn't, "Boring White Guy No. 472" If I wanted that experience I've got life to deal with.

Also, hell yes on the collaborations happening here.

#47 Posted by AuthenticM (3803 posts) -

I honestly don't know about this, although I trust the brains behind the game.

Icemael knows that I've thoroughly argued my position on why Japanese games and their developers are a dying breed. I didn't see the need to do it all over again.

Looks pretty crazy, very interested.  Is it me though or does the main character look cross eyed?  It made laugh at a couple of parts.

Grasshopper Games + Absinthe sold in vending machines, I'm definitely in.
