Overview
Shanghai II (not to be confused with the computer game Shanghai II: Dragon's Eye) is a mahjong solitaire game developed by Success and released by SUNSOFT (under license from Activision) for arcades in Japan on March 1989.
The sequel to the 1988 arcade version of the 1986 game Shanghai, Shanghai II features a new progression system where players progress through five new unique layouts (named after different animals), followed by the original puzzle (as "Dragon"). In addition, arcade operators can enable hidden tiles whose contents can only be revealed to the player once they are selectable.
It later received a first-party port for the Famicom on August 24, 1990 and for the Game Gear on December 27, 1990. It also received third-party ports by both SystemSoft (for the NEC PC-9800, NEC PC-8800, and MSX in 1989) and Alfa System (for the Sharp X68000 on December 8, 1989 and the PC Engine CD-ROM² on April 13, 1990, both released by Hudson Soft).
Levels
The game includes six different layouts, accessed in the arcade version in this order:
- Tiger
- Scorpion
- Monkey
- Snake
- Panther
- Dragon (based on the layout from the original Shanghai)
