it came out yesterday and there is a supreme lack of discussion goin down D: what do people think so far? I'm pretty far in, got to the 4th serpentriones boss and he's a monster asshole so I needed a break, after playing for like 11 hours

it's soooooooooo good, most of the characters are radical, even if the boobs are highly illogical (favorites; io, rolando, and makoto) the story's great, the amount of choice you have is pretty mind bending; biggest problem I have are weird tonal shifts, one point it is super sad and the next I am discussing what makes osaka TRULY unique. also it's pretty hard, though more forgiving than the first one. another little nitpick; your party members are terrible at levelling themselves up. I'm like level 33, yet there's 2-3 people out of 13 that have a vitality stat of 10 or higher. Vitality is pretty important guys

I played it back when it was released it Japanese. I don't remember getting far in it. The only thing I do remember is wondering if the train that crashes was the same train Charlie was on at the end of Persona 4.

Taking my time with it but its a lot tougher in the beginning than I thought. The auction is a lot different too with it being a one payment down instead of slowly increasing your bid. Also story is moving a lot fast than DS1, which is a nice change.

@Bocam: Oh no! I don't want that to happen D:

Wait, so is it easier than the first one? And is it a direct sequel (don't see how that's possible)?

not necessarily easier, but less cheap.

also no, not direct, the only thing the same is the surviving part

So far I am really likeing it. I just got it yesterday with some of my friends and I'm only on the second day (something I plan on fixing once I'm done posting is this thread) but there is one thing that bothers me about this game.

They are reuseing a bunch of art from the first game. I know its only for the throw away backround characters like SDF Officer or thug but I wish they came up with different art for thoes characters.

This isn't really a huge problem but it is one I noticed pretty quickly and for some reason it really bothered me. I played and beat both the first Devil Survivor and Overclocked and I look forward to putting meany hours into this game as well.

Is there any reason for someone who hasn't played the first game to go do that before playing this one? Would it be too hard to go back, are there any important story beats, etc?

Also, is this one voiced? I remember the DS version of the first not being voiced and being a little bummed.

I want to get it but it bugs me that we could see a 3ds version which i would wait for that. So i guess i will play the waiting game on it while i enjoy the first one because i still have not finished that game. The problem is the game could be as rare as the first one was on DS.

Budget's a bit tight right now, so I will not be buying this game until April at the earliest. Am just now currently playing the first game, though, and it's pretty awesome.

Sometimes you've got to grind a while to make that stuff easier. Frustrating, but the reality of most jrpgs.

Devil Survivor 1 soured me on the whole subseries, so I've decided to skip this one. I can't even trust reviews or forums, because people were really positive about Devil Survivor 1, but eff that game. Day 7 was harder than Matthew Rorie in the same room as Emma Stone. I'm fine with mandatory grinding if the game is sort of up front about it, but you basically don't have to grind at all for most of the game, until suddenly Day 7 arrives and you have to grind for HOURS. No thanks.

Yeah, I was gonna grab this game, but I'm still playing through Overclocked, so I don't have any real reason to besides "hey, sometimes Atlus games get hard to find real fast". I thought for a second about whether they might release a 3DS version of Devil Survivor 2 (Overoverclocked?), but it seems like most of the improvements they added from the first game to Overclocked (auction system, compendium, etc.) are already in DS2 (and there was almost no 3D to speak of), so I'd be surprised if they did a 3DS version of this one. But, you never know!

    Please do. I must know!

Also, any significant changes to the strategy side of things? I felt like the demon types were even more restrictive than the HMs in Pokemon, in that I really wanted to have certain useful abilities like Flight at all times (Avian demons, I think?), but instead just ended up with a grab bag of demons that actually had good stats. My question is, are the abilities that demons give you during your movement phase actually any good?

Yes, you can. It looks fine; on a basic level, it's not much different from the original Devil Surivvor.

I played about an hour into it. Not much to say on it thus far, other than I'm liking both the music and general set-up more than the first game.

I'd be enjoying the game right now if UPS wasn't driving my copy around the USA. It started its journey 2-3 hours away a day before release, so it could get here on time... then it just decided it needed the ultimate road trip. It's in NY right now, hopefully it doesn't take a boat to Europe or something.

no, but I neglected to mention the little dudes he had around, once you killed them his resistances were gone, but he has three forms and the third form was a beast, though I did beat it in two go arounds (play suicidally in that last round, you can save in the middle) and I got a pretty badass ending so I'm pretty happy about that. Overall not nearly as bad as babel was

If my only experience with Shin Megami Tensei games is Persona 4 (and the couple of Quick Looks of other SMT games on GiantBomb), how would you describe Devil Survivor 2? As I mentioned previously, I only have a 3DS - should I wait for an Overclocked edition or just get this one? Are the textures really low-res? What about the text when using a 3DS to play a DS game? Really blurry? Finally - any voice acting? Any cutscenes?

the game is basically... final fantasy tactics, or tactics ogre, or whatever, fused with the persona 4 battle system; you are on a grid, you have 4 characters and each of those characters get two demons a piece. you can use your demons' moves to get some buffs or heal yourself, and if you move next to them you can attack, which basically constitutes a two round fight of persona 4 battling. It's also harder than Persona 4; I never really had to grind, but I did have to think way more tactically.

sorry, no idea about relative blurriness on a 3DS, overclocked does have voice acting while DS2 doesn't (I hear it's not that great though) but I do think the DS2 story is way better, the characters are better + there are more of them, there are a few cutscenes (nothing special) only thing DS1 does better is the music and the character portraits (female character portraits in DS2 are SO BAD)

also wouldn't expect an overclocked version of this, because this has most of the improves overclocked has, besides the voice acting.

Just got my copy last night in the mail. So far so good! Love the battle system.
