I've been looking for an SMT game to play, as I've just finished Persona 4 and am currently playing Persona 3 with a friend. I noticed this is coming out soon so I figured it might be a good excuse to buy 3DS, especially since I scratched the touch screen on my old school DS a year ago while playing Mario Party with a pen instead of a stylus (ugh).

From what I've seen, it looks like a crazy strategy RPG hybrid, which sounds cool. I haven't played many strategy games besides Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced but that was awesome in my book.

    So, any thoughts?

If you've played it the first time through on the regular DS, maybe not (I have and plan to buy this one). If you haven't played it yet, it's a pretty good game with multiple endings.

I never played the original but playing another game on my scratchy DS screen is very unappealing. Plus I'll probably want a 3DS later anyway whenever Nintendo decides to release games.

    @Bocam: Somehow I think you're trolling me :P

Just play it on the DS, it doesn't even use the touchscreen.

Well it looks like there are a lot of mixed feelings. I think I'll get it for the regular DS and try to bear with the screen.

Would any of you recommend any other SMT games instead?

SMT: Strange Journey for the DS is an excellent game. I've not played Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga, but they also seem fairly enjoyable.

strange journey is super hard and a little light on story; SMT3: Nocturne is too, but it's a much better game. Digital Devil Saga is crazy, and the 1st one kinda leaves off on a cliff hanger so you pretty much have to play them both in a row.

get nocturne then DDS 1 & 2 imo

Its a sold title, and one of the best takes on multiple endings I have ever seen, but not exactly a system seller.  If its really the only game you want the 3DS for, then I say refrain from buying it.

On that note: the 3DS version has an added easy mode, so that's a compelling reason to get that version if the difficulty scares you off.

Start with Devil Summoner 2 for the PS2. Its one of the easier ones, so it should help you ease into the rest of the series. Then you can move onto Nocturne and DDS1/2.

    Devil Summoner 1 sucks.

I can't believe so many people are saying Devil Survivor was difficult. Just like any JRPG, I just needed to grind a bunch and then I could deal with any boss I encountered without many complications.

@FluxWaveZ: Flux, what exactly didn't you like about it? It seems like everyone else's main complaint is the difficulty.

@Vadis: Perhaps my previous comment was too harsh. I actually enjoyed the battle system and some of the music (even though it's very repetitive), but that's pretty much all I liked. I was interested in where the story was going initially, but I found myself being less and less intrigued in what was going on and it goes absolutely insane near the end, at which point I didn't care about it at all. Also, I didn't like the characters, which are all poorly represented and have little characterization to them since they're all archetypes.

The high points of the game for me were the boss fights, in which you actually need to think about what you're doing and develop an effective strategy even before the battle begins. Those were fun.

Hmm. It sounds like I would like the game, but not enough to warrant purchasing a 3DS. I think I'll wait and see how the 3DS version is received, and play Digital Devil Saga in the meantime.

im pretty sure gamestop has a special deal for trading in any ds for a 3ds and its only like 100 bucks i think.  Tho im not sure how bad your screen and if that would effect it or not.

If you've got a DS, then just play it on that. I can't imagine it being much better on the 3DS, even with the extra day content. I liked it.... it was okay (a bit hard, and sometimes if you don't enter the battles with exactly the right moves, you can't win but the game won't tell you until AFTER you've been killed) but I wouldn't shell out hundreds of dollars for it. Then again.... the price has dropped and if you think you are going to buy one anyway then it might be right for you.
