According to the latest Famitsu, a preview trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV is going to be bundled in Soul Hackers 3DS when that game releases on August 30. (Now I'm even more excited I just preordered that yesterday!)

So, it's probably going to be a bit before we get new info, and even longer until the game sees release. My breath is bated.

Awesome. It's been twenty-five years since the franchise got its start, hasn't it? I have to imagine that Atlus must have something special up their sleeves.

@Hailinel: It's allegedly an internal project at Atlus, by the same team that made the Maniacs edition of Nocturne and both Raidou games, rather than outsourced like Strange Journey. So yeah, this is going to be a big deal.

So this also probably means their main team is still working on P5. SO DON'T WORRY GUYS

I'm guessing that Atlus USA will localize it. There's no reason why they wouldn't. The only reason that the original Devil Summoner's PSP remake wasn't was because Sony blocked it. (Seriously, Sony, I thought you were past that.)

Wait, this is coming out on my birthday? TOO SOON, ATLUS. I'm still not that good at Japanese, and it takes a while to understand how something like まま works.

    @Bocam:

Not that まま. Why do you think I used hiragana? (On that note, though, I have an idea of how まま works. I just picked that because I couldn't remember any specific grammar points that kick my ass (even though they're certainly out there) and まま is difficult to translate.)

@Video_Game_King: You can also use まま as ママ. Though just as a pun. Steins;gate has some weird humor.

Has anyone taken a look at the teaser website? Click here if you already haven't. I'm mostly bringing this up because I understand absolutely no Japanese and want to know what those two lines of text surrounding the IV mean. Even if it's a total let down and says "IT'S COMING", I'd still like to know. Help me internet!

Nope, can't accept that title. I've only played Persona 3 FES, Persona 4, Devil Survivor and Strange Journey. Hailinel and Eirikr are much more acquainted with the series than I am, however I'm doing my best to follow news concerning it nowadays.

But SMT II is the craziest. You fight God. Like, Christian God. That is "mentioned" in Nocturne.

I'm actually playing it now (I just got to the center after attempting to capture that scientist) but it's not the best.

DDS2 is probably the craziest though.

To be fair, though, it's a direct sequel to SMT1, meaning you have to play through that. I only say that because it's a nightmare to navigate.

@Animasta: Nope, you don't fight the sun, you fight Hinduism's transcendent concept of the universe and all beings and matter...so yeah, like Strange Journey's final boss, you're fighting a concept more than anything else. But not a concept in the Giant Bomb sense.

well the final dungeon is still the sun, as everyone is merely solar data besides Seraph.

@Animasta: True, but that's just when you take the story at face value. Most of the modern games, Nocturne and SJ especially, have a bit of added subtext when you consider the mythological elements. DDS is no different. For example, the first game is about the climb up the ladder of the chakras, which you do in the game by taking over the other tribes, culminating in the discovery of the "true consciousness" and the "dissolution of the self" at the apex of Sahasrara, which of course is nothing but the dour truth at the start of the second game. Essentially, and I'm really no expert on DDS2 since I only played it once, the point of having Brahman there at the end is to provide that type of resolution and union with the universe itself.

Man, the plot of DDS1&2 is awesome. Remove the random battles and the grindy Mantra grids and they'd be so top tier.

Aw, I'm not very fond of the random battles either but I thought the progression system in DDS1&2 was pretty interesting. Those games are the only modern SMT that dropped fusion and did its own thing.

@mutha3: It is interesting, especially the hexagonal grid of the second game, but it takes far, far too much money to unlock the higher tier nodes. I have a second cycle save at the end of DDS2 (with Satan and the other bosses beaten) and most characters still have quite a few unclaimed nodes. I'm not asking it to be easy to get the high level skills, just less tedious and without obvious needed grinding for cash. A DDS1&2 collection would be great for the Vita.

Oh, i didn't saw the Meguro part. And i don't think Kenichi Tsuchiya composed that amazing song. That disco music... So good. I also love that every step you take in the Disco, a message appears saying that "Someone is dancing furiously".

@Eirikr: I know that interpretation of the story, but it's still the sun D:

also it's already top tier, it's the best soundtrack meguro has ever done. FACT.

IT'S NO DISCO MUSIC FROM SMT II !

meguro didn't do the early SMT games, p. sure it's kenichi tsuchiya

Oh, i didn't saw the Meguro part. And i don't think Kenichi Tsuchiya composed that amazing song. That disco music... So good. I also love that every step you take in the Disco, a message appears saying that "Someone is dancing furiously".

I'm a fan of Nocturne's soundtrack, myself. I actually have the Dante Battle theme as the ringtone on my cellphone.

Not really worth its own thread, but the SMTIV site now has a spooooooky remix of the SMT1 intro music on it. Also a new text blurb saying it's being developed by the "Maniacs" team, but we already knew that. I dunno, I think by using this music is an admission of "going back to its roots" i.e., it'll still probably be a first-person dungeon crawl. I was hoping for third-person honestly, because Nocturne has the best environments Atlus ever made, in that it actually has large, expansive environments.

Site's got new music. Also, Atlus staff are apparently impressed with the game's first trailer which will debut with the release of Soul Hackers.

Also, just noticed this, but it seems that the image on the website is becoming clearer.

@FluxWaveZ: Excellent, that's a mix of SMTII's intro and title themes. Though Atlus staff being impressed at their own trailer...okay, sure, why not.

Haha, yeah, I also thought that was a bit weird. I'd love to hear an occasion of a team at Atlus trashing another team's trailer.

@FluxWaveZ: It has all the honesty of a mother appraising her own child's shitty artwork. :p But what I'm hoping is that they were impressed by the game's production values. "Wow, this game looks like it has double the investment of Strange Journey's budget of $5!"

So now that we've moved from 1 -> 2, I guess a Nocturne mix is on schedule? Though I'd wager they'd go with this intro theme since the other, rockin' one is a little different in style from what they seem to be going for.

oh man that's so good; wonder if we're gonna get a remix of eternal throne from strange journey or if that's it.
