AW SHIT

IM GONNA WATCH IT NOW, HOLD ME GUYS

EDIT:
jesus fuck this is Doi artwork. K-kaneko has to be doing the designs at least, right? The demons?

EDIT2: almost no new demons, and the new ones don't look very Kaneko.  First person as well.

:/

Time travelling samurai? Let's do this.

I don't mind the first person battles. Eventually you appreciate the expedience of not having to wait for animations.

#3 Posted by Turambar (6813 posts) -

I like Etrian Odyssey.  I liked Strange Journey.  I am ok with this.

#4 Posted by aurahack (2280 posts) -

I think it looks pretty dope. I might actually have to get a 3DS for this. :<

#5 Edited by dungbootle (2458 posts) -

Looks awesome. I was also surprised by no Kaneko, that's okay because I really like the P3-onwards artist as well.

#6 Posted by TooWalrus (13237 posts) -

Unless you're shooting yourself in the damn head with every attack, the lack of battle animations doesn't really bother me. I've never played the main SMT games, but I definitely want this- that music is great, too.

#7 Posted by Eirikr (1009 posts) -

I added all the demons in the trailer to the page :D

Short version: everything but the battles and designs looks AWESOME AS HELL

On the other hand, those battles and obviously non-Kaneko designs. D:D:D:D:D:D:

This is gonna take a bit to sink in.

That's an awesome trailer, save for the part where the Nico Nico user comments scroll across the video. God, if Youtube did the same thing, there would be blood in the streets.

Youtube to the rescue, then!!

#10 Posted by mutha3 (4986 posts) -

at least it wasn't Yasuda doing the designs, I guess.

#11 Posted by Hailinel (25179 posts) -

@Eirikr: Hallelujah! Thanks!

I'm not really sure what to make of the demon designs yet. The trailer doesn't show enough of them to give me a good overall picture. It is disappointing that Kaneko isn't involved, though.

#12 Posted by Neurotic (632 posts) -

Looks pretty good. Shame it's only on the 3DS.

#13 Posted by Eirikr (1009 posts) -

@Hailinel: I really want to know what that one new demon design is, though I don't have time. I'm sure will figure it out before I can. If it's supposed to be a god of some sort, it really doesn't mesh with Kaneko's design aesthetics, but we'll see. So bummed that the battles look barely better than Strange Journey's. And I mean that purely in terms of the 2D sprite visuals. The 3D field graphics look fantastic, so it's kind of a letdown in that regard.

#14 Posted by Animasta (14713 posts) -

looks great to me.

But Yasuda's gravity defying tits are the best.

You can turn that off.

Doi, huh? At least it's not Soejima or Yasuda! And with sound likely by Tsuchiya...

The overworld looks great. The atmosphere and variance of settings look amazing, and the new displays look good too. I don't mind the 2D battles. Cannot wait to kill my friends.

#17 Posted by ervonymous (1297 posts) -

I didn't mind them reusing the demon models throughout the PS2 era but those sprites look alarmingly similar to the ones in Strange Journey. A weird contrast with the beautiful skill effects.

Cathedral of Shadows minister is looking mighty fine though.

Guess it's all on me to subtitle this thing isn't it? Away I go~

#19 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19372 posts) -

I'm excited for this, but I'm not sure how I feel about the first person combat.

#20 Edited by Soren (291 posts) -

@Eirikr: I'm racking my brain trying to find out what "Kougasapurou" (sic) is supposed to be, but I'm not coming up with much. It looks pretty terrible, I can tell you that!

also why does everyone have silly bangs

EDIT: Do not search google images for "Kougasapurou", it is literally nothing but cartoon porn.

This trailer has left me super-bummed. I guess it just shows me that I care much more for the mythological stuff in the games than the games themselves, because as a game this still looks brilliant.

Oh, that and those battle sprites. Press Turn System yes, but come on, Atlus! Maybe everything will be 3D rendered in a Vita port? Heh heh heh

#25 Posted by Soren (291 posts) -

I'm not too bummed about the sprites. Some of these designs make pretty terrible transitions to 3D (Dominion, Ongyo-Ki, anything with a fire/smoke/particle effect), and it'll at least make for snappier battles.

but nothing will fill the Kaneko shaped hole in my heart

#26 Edited by mutha3 (4986 posts) -
@Eirikr: I am ridiculously bummed out at a lack of Kaneko. Shit, man... I'm not feeling like "I HAVE TO GET GET THIS GAME NOW!!!" anymore, like I did at the mention of the name.  I'm shocked that he doesn't seem involved with this. If there's any game Atlus(and the fans) would want Kaneko on, isn't it this one?

At this point, I almost expect to just hear an announcement that Kaneko's leaving Atlus.

Yeah, If they couldn't get him for the fourth mainline SMT game, I can't imagine he'd be involved in any other projects of lesser importance.

man that is some bleak business

#28 Posted by Eirikr (1009 posts) -

I'm kinda feeling this is some Index business trying to Persona-up SMT to make it appeal to a broader audience.

I'm not seeing the Persona-influence, though...so far, this seems like its staying true to SMT thematically. I'm not seeing Persona design elements. There's VA, yes, but  I bet you will still kill all your friends in this game.

I dunno, I just think they couldn't get Kaneko.
#30 Posted by Eirikr (1009 posts) -

@mutha3: I'm talking about the IN YOUR FACE ANIME approach to the cutscenes, and the use of Doi instead of Kaneko.

One of Nocturne's greatest strengths was its cutscenes' brevity. They were succinct and well-directed and framed. These guys here are gonna talk and talk and talk and talk

#31 Posted by mutha3 (4986 posts) -
@Eirikr
Ah. I get ya. Now that I think about it -- you're right, that kinda sucks.

Nocturne's minimalist approach was one of the things I loved about it. They wouldn't call up MIYUKI SAWASHIRO and OTHER BIGSHOT JAPANESE VA WHOSE NAME I DON'T REMEMBER if this was going to follow in Nocturne's footstep.
#32 Posted by Hailinel (25179 posts) -

I don't know. It's hard for me to get a good idea of what the cutscenes in the game are going to be like, aside from the obvious presence of voice acting. This doesn't really say anything regarding what the average length of a cutscene will be or the amount of dialogue that will be found throughout the game. It's certainly a change from Nocturne regardless, but I'm not worried about it yet.

As for the battles, I'm disappointed that the demons are sprites, as well, but at the same time, like noted, some of the designs don't really works as well in 3D space. I don't think it really detracts from the game, but still, the lack of Kaneko is a bummer.

#33 Posted by envane (1164 posts) -

i dont reaaaly wat to buy a 3ds :( but i reaaaaly want to play this game ... but i feel it will be like strange journey , fun but oh so annoying in handheld form.

#34 Posted by Urmean (599 posts) -

I chortle at the fact that everybody thinks that Nocturne is the only SMT game.

I was never under the impression that this game would look and feel like Nocturne beyond an expectation that Kaneko would be involved. I was wrong on that point, but beyond that I see nothing else particularly disappointing so far.

The third person dungeons are all it took to put this as my most anticipated game in the last three or four years.

HURRY UP ON THE LOCALIZATION, ATLUS!

still, that doesn't mean it needs to do the same thing nocturne does.

#40 Posted by Eirikr (1009 posts) -

@Animasta: True, it needs to do what Nocturne did, only better, keeping in mind all the incremental changes that accrued over the course of the games that followed it in the past 8-9 years. It honestly seems like it's doing that!

...except for the part about no Kaneko, of course.
