Should I play The Answer? (spoilers)

#1 Posted by msavo (7252 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

So I just finished the game and thought it was fantastic. The characters, story, social links, combat everything was just top notch. I loved the ending as well. The main character falling asleep on the roof with Aigis as everyone remembers and runs to meet you, fantastic. No I've read that The Answer continues the game with the main character going into a coma and dying and you controlling Aigis from there on. Now that premise doesn't really appeal to me. If I liked the original ending do you think The Answer would make me like the Persona 3 universe more or less?

Its not the type of thing that will change your opinion on the universe at all, its just an Epilogue to be played for closure. I'm not a fan myself though.

FUCK NO!

FES RUINS THE ENTIRE FUCKING PLOT OF P3!

The entire purpose of the savior story is fucking ruined because of that fucking FES.  What's the point of the savior story when you have a god damn story to take place after it?!

#5 Posted by FancySoapsMan (5410 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

No.

Persona 3's ending was excellent. The Answer ruins it.

It's a savior story!  YOU DONT NEED CLOSURE!

I didn't say it was good closure. <3

You should watch the start of it at least, because those anime cutscenes are AWESOME.

Plus more Aigis you know.

But also lots of stupid restrictive dungeon fighting yawns. I didn't finish it. Maybe one day.
#9 Posted by Chop (1707 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

It won't ruin the story for you, don't worry about that. Worry more about how fucking frustrating the gameplay is.

Just watch the scenes on youtube.
#10 Posted by Animasta (12740 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

also, personal taste aside, all of the cutscenes are basically in the first hour and then in the last 30 minutes or so, and the rest is basically just dungeon crawling.

I never liked Aegis, so I have zero interest in The Answer.

Persona always seemed more magic than sci-fi to me. A robot felt out of place.

Persona 2 had robots, I believe... They were part of Hitler's battalion I think.

@BananaKid I didn't love Aigis but I didn't hate her either. She was ok. My favorite characters were Akihiko, Ken and Shinji. Their story was very interesting and playing as the female protagonist you get more attached to Shinji as he has a S Link.

Ken is the worst character WHAT

Ken? KEN!?

I need to have a lie down. This thread is all backwards bananas.

I wouldn't advice anyone to play The Answer, It's a pretty useless add-on and you'll probably be better off just watching the scenes on Youtube (I beat it just for the sake of beating it though).

You should boot it up at least once though, just to see the cool opening cutscene.

I don't recommend it. I feel Persona 3 had a great ending, and The Answer actually made it worse.

#20 Posted by mutha3 (4963 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

Whether you like Persona for the gameplay, the story or the aesthetic--

Stay away from the answer.

I thought it was terrible, but then, the original's ending didnt satisfy me at all either. Loved everything up to it though.

Lol yeah me too. I liked how he went into a coma too and didn't die right away.

@Laketown @Cloudenvy Are you going to tell me Ken is better than someone like Fukka? I thought she was annoying. Ken may seem whiny but dudes mom died and he had to work with the people that killed her. In the end he manned up and I thought his Social Link was one of the better ones.
#23 Posted by Animasta (12740 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago
@RE_Player92: I don't care his voice acting was almost as annoying as Fuuka

but how can you like him over Junpei

Actually, HItler's entire army of neo-nazi's consist of robots.

You've got the infantry cyborg nazis, the spider tanks and the mechas to name a few.....
#25 Posted by msavo (7252 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago
@Laketown I thought Junpei's relationship with Chidori was fantastic but overall I liked Ken's social link more, I thought it was cute.

I'd only recommend playing The Answer if you feel like hating yourself.

#27 Posted by eroticfishcake (7745 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

The music is pretty good though, particularly near the end of it. But overall I think you're better off leaving it alone.

I wanted to like The Answer because Aigis was the MC but I got about 3-ish hours in and was too frustrated with it and stopped.

Reading these replies really makes me want to finish the Female MC story on PSP because I would like to see all the guys S-Links. I always liked Akihiko and would like to know his deal.

#29 Edited by Kyle (2317 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

It wasn't so much the story that bothered me in The Answer, as much as it was the difficulty and the total lack of the social aspect of the game. I understand why The Answer is only dungeons, but the genius of Persona 3 & 4 is the way the two sides of the gameplay compliment each other, creating something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Once you remove one half of the formula, the game feels mindless and boring.

Yeah, it's pretty intriguing. Would be a completely different experience with FeMC. Kinda weird that P3 puts the S-Links with the members of your party on the backburner really so you never get to know half of them very well. Glad P4 changed that.

I must admit though, I wasn't a big fan of Ken either.

I was soo bummed by the ending of the game, but very moved by it as well. Doing anything else in that universe is pointless so an add-on liek that would just  piss me off

#33 Edited by Cloudenvy (5724 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago
@RE_Player92:

Fuuka had pretty rubbish/annoying voiceacting indeed, but that doesn't necessarily make her a bad character(to me at least).

But....I just can't seem to like Ken at all.

Just watch it on YouTube if you feel like you really must see it. The Answer is a half-hour of an overdone, idiotic sci-fi cliche that really cheapens the P3 experience and I really wish I hadn't wasted my time. I liked the P3P ending as is.

#35 Posted by animateria (3250 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

If you want more Persona 3 dungeon crawls and combat. Sure.

I definitely enjoyed it a lot since I didn't need to worry about Social Links and could just plow through the story. I'm also sure a lot of people disagree and hate it for not having Social Links and what not.

Just remember to use the new character and Aigis most of the time or you'll get raped at some point. I found out the hard way since I never used the new one since I didn't like the design.
#36 Posted by dungbootle (2247 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

Never finished it, didn't really enjoy my time with it.

#37 Posted by InfiniteGeass (2004 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

If only to play some of the epic battles it has at the end, yes. Also be sure to use the new character or else you will be pretty screwed at one point where you have to use her.

just watch the cutscens on utube, trust me the difficulty is bumped up and its annoying when you die after making so much progress. trust me i've been there

You and I are polar opposites, then. I hated Akihiko and Ken. Shinji was definitely cool, but his death (or incapacitation, if you're a girl) was unwarranted, especially for that bloody squirt Ken.

I loved Aigis. Watching her become human was nothing short of fascinating. Just like the deal with Mitsuru; they were my two favourite S-Links.

EDIT:
@REPlayer92: No, it's worthless.
#40 Posted by msavo (7252 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago
@Aus_azn: See I only got to like rank 4 or 5 for Mitsuru. Probably going to get her in my second play through as she was defiantly one of the more interesting characters. Also I thought Koromaru was better than Aigis... you can punch me if you want.

Finish it. It's easily the best one of the main 3 girls.

I liked The Answer, story-wise that is; having just pure dungeon crawl with no compendium and no social links to break up the tedium a bit grates on the nerves after a while. If you're into difficulty, Answer will probably be a little more interesting. I liked Aigis at the very least so that may have been a contributing factor as well. I don't see how it ruins P3, it just continues it. The MC's fate was really ambiguous in the normal ending so finding out what exactly happened to him was welcome, at least for me.

I never did any of the FeMC romances; I found it uncomfortable to sit through my FeMC hitting on guys. The fact that 10-year old Ken is available as a female romance also made me keep away from FeMC romance altogether.

The only reason you should play it, is if you thought Yukari was annoying and want to go in and kick her ass with your personas.

Thats it.
#44 Posted by ArbitraryWater (8943 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

I thought the main story of Persona 3 was awesome. I couldn't stand The Answer, and thus only played like 2 hours of it before giving up. If you want another 15-20 hours of pure dungeon crawling (but harder) without any social aspect or real story payoff.

And, I might as well also include that I think Aigis is a lame character and has no personality for all but the last month of the story.

#45 Posted by ChrisTaran (1261 posts) - 2 years, 17 days ago

I'll be one of the rare people to say they really like The Answer. If you want more P3, then I personally think it's worth checking out. I liked quite a few parts of it.

#46 Posted by Devoid (428 posts) - 2 years, 16 days ago

Aw, sounds like most people here are telling me to stay away from The Answer. But I'm picking it up from the post office tomorrow anyway; its existence alone intrigues me enough to play it.
