Differences to previous versions
The most discernible and important difference is that all areas except Tartarus dungeons are now drawn in 2D. A cursor is used to scroll around areas, click on characters to talk to them and navigate to other areas. Additionally, all the cutscenes in the previous versions of the game that used the in-game character models will be replaced with cutscenes featuring character portraits on top of a static pre-rendered background. It has not been announced if the animated FMV cutscenes from previous releases will return. Furthermore, The Answer, the epilogue to the main story created for FES, will not be included in P3P. This is thought to be so as to greatly reduce the size of the game data for storage reasons on PSP and PSP Go. Additional changes include:
The new female protagonist is voiced by Marina Inoue. She has previously voiced Yoko in Gurren Lagaan, Shu in Blue Dragon and Alicia in Valkyria Chronicles.
Persona 4 Cameos
Along with various gameplay changes, Atlus have shown a few Persona 4 characters making cameo appearances in Persona 3 Portable as well.
Ms. Kashiwagi has been seen in the trailer talking to the Main Character and Akihiko during the vacation scenes and recent Famitsu scans show a younger Yukiko Amagi talking to the female heroin and standing in front of the school from Persona 4.
Persona 4's rural town of Inaba will also be present in P3P. During the sports festival for the female heroin you visit Inaba for a brief while where you meet Yukiko Amagi and stay at the Amagi Inn.

A yet further enhanced version of Persona 3 is coming to the PlayStation Portable. The game will feature an additional female protagonist, and several of the improvements to the series realized in Persona 4 will be carried over. The game was released in Japan on November 1, 2009.

Additional changes include:- A new selectable Female Protagonist with her own story route and events. All the menus will be changed to more 'feminine' patterns and colors.
- New events for the Male Protagonist's story.
- Additional characters, including Theodore a male equivalent to Elizabeth who will serve as Velvet Room assistant in lieu of Elizabeth if the player selects him while playing as the Female Protagonist. Theodore will not be available when playing as the Male Protagonist.
- Additional music.
- Additional difficulty levels, now 5 total. The highest difficulty level, Maniacs, will not allow the player to carry over any of the New Game benefits.
- The ability to control team members, added to the series in Persona 4.
- The ability to fast travel to destinations via a menu instead of having to walk there, added to the series in Persona 4.
- The ability to guard in battle, as in Persona 4. This replaces the Stand By command.
Trivia
The new character thought to be the Female Protagonist has XXII written in her hair in hairpins. The Fool card in the Tarot deck can be 0 or XXII (22). Female protagonist is therefore on the opposite side of the deck to Male protagonist. More traits in the opposites theme is that her hair and eyes are red and she is cheery whereas his hair and eyes are blue and he is always sullen. The new female protagonist is voiced by Marina Inoue. She has previously voiced Yoko in Gurren Lagaan, Shu in Blue Dragon and Alicia in Valkyria Chronicles.
