Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

Game » consists of 4 releases. First released on Dec 09, 2008

Persona 4 borrows heavily from the gameplay structure of Persona 3 with a mix of role-playing and social simulation elements. Persona 4 adds a new setting, story, weather system, and multiple dungeons.

An interesting possible contradiction for many GB members...

So how many of you know what "Anime for jerks" is? Quite a lot of you right? and a lot of you have also used the phrase/video in threads here.

Of those people, how many of you also loved Persona 4? How many of you will watch Persona 4 anime? Personally, I've always been very vocal with my dislike of anime, but I loved Persona 4. So I guess I have to try right?

What about you?

Pretty sure no one really takes the "Anime for jerks" thing seriously.

#3 Edited by KaosAngel (13766 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

I'm passing.  Persona Trinity, the sequel to Persona 3, fucking sucked ass, and I'm a guy who watches a healthy dose of animu.

#4 Posted by SethPhotopoulos (4813 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

I hate that joke and I'm not even into anime that much.

#5 Posted by htr10 (305 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

most of us are jerks, too, so the pieces do pretty much fit together.
#6 Posted by msavo (7267 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

I love anime and the Persona games but have no interest in the Persona 4 anime. I'm playing the game now so why would I want to watch the events again? If I do want to know the true canon I'll watch the endurance run and see Charlie bang everyone.

Anime is for Jeffs.

#8 Posted by EuanDewar (4024 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

I don't think there's anyone here that actually takes "Anime Is For Jerks" seriously.

I dislike that quote and I'm pretty sure even Jeff does too. It's just cartoons dood, its weird to shun an entire style of animation the same way its weird to shun an entire genre of music. Just my two cents.

Thats true, the Giant bomb crew acknowledge that Anime isn't really their thing but they know that it isn't all bad.

Anyway, as a person who is knowledgeable of anime and the performances of the anime studios, I hopeful of the Persona 4 anime.
#13 Posted by MooseyMcMan (8559 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

I'm not going to watch it.

#14 Posted by Seroth (662 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

Not really a big fan of anime. I really enjoy one-shot, original anime movies, but usually can't stand watching a running series. I'm interested to see how the Persona 4 anime turns out, and will probably watch the first episode. I'm not truly excited for it, though.

#15 Posted by RiotBananas (3600 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

As Jeff said on the Bombcast, if they're not getting the actual Voice Actors from the game, they better not do it at all.

#16 Posted by SlightConfuse (3963 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

who is this for though, if you played the game or watched the endurance run(or both) then why watch it.

Some people may want to just enjoy the story without having to go back and just grind.  Also many people that have played P4 might not have even heard of the endurance run.  There might also have been people that have heard of the games and were interested but didn't play it for whatever reason.

I hate anime.

I despise the Persona games.
I am also a jerk.

How is that for a contradiction?

I'd agree.  But how likely is it that they would?  Whichever studio (ADV, Funimation, Ocean Group) handles the dub, they might not be able to use the game's voice actors depending on contracts or availability.

Well, I never played the game. I watched the Endurance Run and it was pretty much like I was playing it. So I think the anime would be an easier way to streamline it.

Hell, maybe that's the reason. Atlus saw the ER and thought "FANTASTIC!" and went for an anime.

Honestly though, I don't know how interested I'll be in it because it won't be the same without Jeff and Vinny being Jeff and Vinny.

You could say the same thing about books being adopted to movies. While the story and characters are the same, it is the way they are experience on a different media is what interest people. It is possible that some story parts can be better told in this than the game.
#22 Posted by SlightConfuse (3963 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago
@metalsnakezero: they only have 20 minute episodes to tell the story of this game but isee your point. i just feel it would be better to play the game form the best experience

I don't care. I'm personally fascinated by anime, though not some aspects, and for that matter, some of the art renderings of it. I do not like that real simple generic anime look with the same 3 expressions, the anime in Personna4 was fine, and I have liked the renditions in the little I have really watched, like Akira, or that Ql of Pheonix Wright (lady with the metal bra rocks!) As for the  undesirable aspects of Anime, focusing on chidren or early teens as sex objects, and concepts such as casual or fantastical rape strikes me as profoundly wrong, Fundementally wrong, Sex itself doesn't really. Personna 4 had sex, and yes, the only thing that bothered me there was a semi hidden voyeuristic quality of one part and the fact I am truly old and checking out some high schoolers on that level. I would not feel right playing that one part of the game, i just would not. And Jeff if he mean't it that way would be rather correct.

I liked the anime in Personna 4, and in say Akira, or the little bit else I know of. To be honest, I know it as a stylistic cartoon art form, but I do not follow it. I probably follow Tom Pinchuk more

#25 Posted by Hockeymask27 (3451 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

What if I like anime and the ER but think that a persona 4 anime sounds like a bad idea and not going to watch it.

#26 Posted by Zero_ (1613 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

I definitely admire anime for doing some adventurous, absolutely bat shit crazy that would never happen on 'western' cartoons. Some art styles are pretty good, and in general, the music is pretty good. But I haven't watched an anime since like.... Gurren Lagann? Far too many cliches and stereotypes, gets too predictable at times. Oh, and it's for jerks.

Pshaw, I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of fanboys would turn vegan if the Bomb crew said that "Meat Is For Jerks" and made a positive version of the bombcast where they drank the oat and hemp milk

I don't think it'll be too much of a problem, especially how popular the series is, any studio will be willing to do anything to get the original cast to return to their roles.
#29 Posted by Nottle (1879 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

Man, i haven't watched an anime since Code Geass. I need to get into the better stuff from time to time. I've still never seen Cowboy Beebop. If they did do it in english i don't think it will be hard for them to get the actors, or at least the ones that count. A lot of them do a whole lot of anime already.

Also, Adachi and MC are voiced both voiced by Johnny Young Bosch? Thats weird.

If, who ever doing the dubbing, have to change the voice for a character, it would need to be the MC since it'll sound too much alike if Johnny Young Bosch was doing both Adachi and MC.

lmao!
yeah man, people take it way too seriously... a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that the guy who made the "anime is for jerks" video seems like he was using it as flame bait... especially with the "if you are offended by this" message at the end.

I'm gonna make an uncut anime is for jerks video, this way people can see the whole quote, and even stupid people who don't understand how to joke around can understand that it's not serious...

Anime is cartoons, and cartoons are for babies.  You guys should grow up like me and only watch things if they are rated R, or TV-MA, instead of your baby shows.

#34 Posted by Morridin (73 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

Pffft, real men only watch stuff that's been denied a rating!

#35 Posted by DrPockets000 (2859 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

The phrase was originally a joke meant to be facetious.

#36 Posted by Gamer_152 (13245 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

The "Anime is for jerks" thing was always a joke, pretty much no one took that seriously. Personally I'm not a big fan of anime either and I'm sceptical about the Persona 4 anime too. Something about the pacing, the character interactions and usually the plots just always seems way off to me.

I'm gonna see it just because I want to see the different choices played out. Unless the anime makes all the same choices as me.

I watch a lot of anime but the P4 series doesnt really seem that interesting so far. I will still probably check it out and hopefully be pleasantly suprised.

"R"?  "TV-MA"?!  I only watch porn.  And it has to be that special porn only available with a prescription.

I thought the vast majority were using this simply a trolling meme, the users of this site of all places should be able to make that distinction.

I don't really like Anime but I'd like to think that's just because I don't really have any exposure to it, barring the obvious overlapping with videogames.

why would you want to watch the anime when you've already watched someone play through the entire game?

#48 Edited by Zimbo (874 posts) - 2 years, 25 days ago

I enjoyed Persona 4 simply because Jeff and Vinny were the ones playing it. I would have probably enjoyed it significantly less if I had been playing it on my own. Also, I'm not watching that anime ever as it doesn't follow the official storyline. (Charlie Tunoku)

@DeeGee:  It wasn't just me?!

Aw man, I didn't know Jeff and Rick "The Ricker" Petersen were tight since way back then. That's pretty intense.
