    Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Jul 10, 2008

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is a role-playing game developed and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 2. It is chronologically the fifth installment in the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series. Like its predecessor, its gameplay combines a traditional role-playing game with elements of a social simulation. Its critical and commercial success spawned a sizable media empire, including several spinoff titles.

Do you think P4-2 is more likely than P5?

Sometime during the ER (or shortly after, it was a few years ago after all) Jeff said that he would really love to see a sequel to Persona 4 over Persona 5. I agree, I love the characters, the setting, the tv stuff and all that business. But it just seemed like a crazy idea.

But over the years things have changed. P4 is huge. It has spinoff books, an anime, a fighting game, and a Vita version out soon. All that and probably more since I don't really pay attention to the japanese game market that much.

So, is there a chance Atlus is working on P4-2? Or am I getting my hopes up for the impossible? How do you think they should do it? I'd personally like to see Charlie return to Inaba a few years later, when all the characters are in their early twenties or so, that may be the only way they can do it. It' be interesting to see how they do social links, since you already forged those bonds and helped your friends through all their shit.

Well, since P5 has already been confirmed to exist in one form or another and P4-2 has not...I'm going to say no.

Besides, that fighting game seems like it is pretty much a sequel.

No, that doesn't seem like Atlus' style. Besides as you've mentioned they already have an anime, novels, a fighting game, a vita port, and a stage adaptation. I think they just might have exhausted the franchise, the time for a P4-2 has passed.

The added content from P4G is enough for me.

P5 might be announced at TGS for what I heard. Which is completely plausible based on the previous release cycle.

Have they ever done a direct sequel before? can't think of any. You will be lucky if P5 doesn't exist in a parallel universe to P3 and P4.

This. Pretty sure they've already used the name "Persona 5". No big official announcements yet though.

P4-2 already exist. Its P4:Arena by all accounts. P5 has also been announced.

Unless by "P4-2", you mean an RPG sequel that takes places over another year in Inaba with a calender system and social links. Which is a horrible idea. No, thank you.

Before all the milking, I'd have said "I sure hope so," but I've seen enough Persona 4 stuff that I really want something new now.

I really don't think a Persona 4: The Second will be on the table though.

Like others have mentioned, the narrative "P4-2" already exists as Persona 4 Arena is the canon sequel to Persona 4. No, I do not think they'll make another follow-up in the form of an RPG. Additional Persona 4 products among those that we know of now, I'm sure, would produce diminishing returns. I believe it's in their best interest to release a Persona 5, especially since it's already been confirmed and talked about by the game's developers.

And while their plots weren't directly related, characters from Persona 1 were involved in Persona 2. There were also the two Raidou Kuzunoha Devil Summoner titles.

To go deeper down the rabbit hole, Shin Megami Tensei: if... features a female protagonist that pops up in the original Persona as a transfer student that has knowledge about demons and doesn't talk about her old school at all, and she appears again in Persona 2.

The fighting game makes more sense as an ongoing series featuring those characters because Atlus can continue to sell you new content featuring those dudes without them ever having to change the characters or the relationship dynamics. A new 60-hour rpg would inevitably bring change, which fanboys tend not to like (and besides, why change something which is already popular and profitable?)

If Arena does well enough to continue as a franchise it gives them a third branch to the Shin Megami Tensei brand which can act as a hub for popular characters from past or future games. It's also not completely impossible that characters from P4 might pop up in other SMT/Persona games, perhaps having one of them take a leading role in a future SMT main series game is the necessary concession to get another SMT game made at all.

    Third branch?

The manga seems to be making Rise the canon love interest. They're giving Adachi backstory. Oh and they showed Souji's mom.
The author did the same thing to the Persona 3 manga. I haven't read the latest volume but it's pretty weird.

Well between P4: Arena being a cannon sequel to P4 and Atlus confirming that they are working on P5, it doesn't seem likely, I love Persona 4 more than I have any right to. It is one of my all time favorites, but I don't honestly want any more sequels or remakes. I'm ready to move on and try new things, plus I would love to see what they could do with new stuff. Basically, no I don't think it will happen, and I'm not sure if I would want it to happen.

I love Persona 4, but I can't help but feel like this would be the worst possible idea. They've already done a crazy amount of spinoffs with Persona 4 and the cast, and I think they just need to move on and do something else with some new characters now.

I think Persona 4 Arena is your Persona 4-2. Unfortunately the story of Persona 4 ties up nicely at the end, so I can't see any natural transition to another game.

SMT, Persona, Ultimate/Arena. I mean as ongoing concerns. There's plenty of potential in a fighting game series beyond this one game, I think.

Or have I blanked on another long-term SMT-based franchise?

In the U.S., Atlus brands anything Megami Tensei related as Shin Megami Tensei. In Japan, those games are all their own separate sub-games of the Megami Tensei franchise, many of which don't have Shin Megami Tensei in the title. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is called Megami Ibunroku Devil Survivor in Japan, for example.

The only "true" Shin Megami Tensei titles are those in the direct series. Shin Megami Tensei I-III, If..., and Strange Journey. SMT, Persona, Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga and Devil Survivor are all their own branches of Megami Tensei, and that's not even including the more obscure spin-offs like Last Bible, Majin Tensei, Giten Megami Tensei, and Jack Bros.

I'll be all over Persona 4: G, but at the same time I hope their next story is darker. Less Heartbeat Heartbreak and more shades of gray, denial and depression. Some Sweet Home or even Corpse Party into the mix.

Sadly, a TGS announcement is very unlikely. Atlus doesn't go to TGS and given the shrinking nature of the show, is very unlikely to start. Any P5 announcement would likely be through Famitsu. I wouldn't doubt we'll see P5 information finally pop up this year, maybe even a late '12/early '13 launch in japan, but it's impossible to predict when it'll pop up.

Have they ever done a direct sequel before? can't think of any. You will be lucky if P5 doesn't exist in a parallel universe to P3 and P4.

As mentioned, the persona 2 games, but DDS1 and DDS2 were sequels; as were SMT1 and SMT2 (nocturne was kinda a sequel)

Nocturne was a sequel. They even explain how the world changed so much in the game, and there's even a returning character (Sort of...).

At this point I'd settle for an expansion that wasn't on a portable system. Even having played FES, I'd LOOOOVE to play the PSP version of Persona 3 and ditto P4, but since they never seem to port them (or make them downloadable), it seems unlikely. I have never understood the business reason to restrict a game like this to a portable system. Or maybe it's just personally infuriating.

To that end: I sincerely doubt we'll get a sequel. It would be REALLY hackneyed to find a reason to either go back to Inaba or have everyone meet "Charlie" again elsewhere. Plus the social link system doesn't lend itself to sequelization as you need to either come up with whole new links or a reason why none of the other characters are at the same level (besides "Oh I guess we just drifted apart, but now let's become close again for some reason"). Ultimately: we'll probably see Inaba pop up in P5 much like...the school whose name I can't remember did in P4.

it's not really a sequel in the same way though

it's like saying Nier is a sequel to Drakengard (technically accurate, but...)

Oh, i see what you mean now. Yeah, it feels pretty different. And i haven't tried Nier, but with a little help of Google i discovered that there's a hermaphrodite character! That's so cool...
