Sounds great! Yes please to extended universe stuff

#3 Edited by FluxWaveZ (19308 posts) -

Now that's interesting. I hope it's not too fantastical, if at all.

It's also somewhat interesting that this will take place after P4U.

#4 Posted by Hailinel (23964 posts) -

Very interesting. I hope it sees an English translation.

We're talking about a character in a universe where people are able to summon entities representative of their souls to cast magic and where exists a whole world inside of your TV set. Being too fantastical is the least of the book's concerns.

@Hailinel: All of that is in the past, though. I'd really just want this to be straight up detective fiction where we could actually see Naoto doing detective stuff instead of her just being part of the Investigation Team.

But hell, something like this would never be translated in English...

I REALLY like Persona 4. A lot. But they're kind of milking their first, truly successful Persona game a lot lately, you know?

That said though, this is probably the most interesting spinoff "thing" to come out of Persona 4 so far.

#7 Posted by Hector (3356 posts) -

Don't like how they're milking the crap out of P4.

#8 Edited by FluxWaveZ (19308 posts) -
@Captain_Felafel: Well, following Persona 3, they had a manga, an anime an expansion (P3FES) and another expansion (P3P). But it's no secret that they're milking Persona 4 for all it's worth. I don't really care because I love the game and the stuff they're doing with it, but you could just ignore the stuff that doesn't appeal to you like I'm going to do with the Persona 4 stage show.

Yep! I for one will totally continue to eat up everything Persona 4-related they throw at me until that stuff starts to decrease in quality to the point of ruining the original. But so far, it's all aces. The anime is pretty great, I'm swimming in Megahouse Persona 4/3 keychain figures, looking forward to the fighting game, and this novel seems cool. I'm just worried that Atlus won't know when to stop milking Persona 4 and move on to something else.

#10 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19308 posts) -
@Captain_Felafel: Using the Persona 4 brand to do all of this stuff makes me even more optimistic for Persona 5. When this Persona 4 stuff is done, they'll obviously want Persona 5 to have an equal or an even bigger effect on people so that they can produce these kind of offshoots based on it, so it'll push them even harder to make Persona 5 a great game.
#11 Posted by Sooty (8082 posts) -

Sounds neat, it'll probably be the first thing I slowly read in Japanese too.

Indeed! All this Persona 4 branding is making me antsy for anything related to Persona 5. Most of all, I'm just anxious to see what kind of game it is. Persona 1 and 2 were one very distinct style of game, while Persona 3 and 4 were entirely another. Whether they'll stick to the formula established in the previous 2 games or try and create something different again is what I'm most excited about. That and the kind of tone they'll try to go for, that too will be interesting to see.

One can hope any sort of announcement isn't too far off!

Never say never. But either way, this is a Megami Tensei novel. There are bound to be fantastic properties in the story.

@Captain_Felafel: Its only when the quality of the product gets bad that it needs to stop. Hopefully it doesn't go there and Atlus will do the smart thing by slowly putting P4 related products out.

What different school? Different setting? They were all supposed to stay together forever damnit, Nooooo!

Naoto is mad popular though, surprised this didn't happen sooner.

You really can't say it's surprising though. I'd say less than half of the Investigation Team would stay in Inaba for any extensive period of time after High School, and I'd even go as far as to assume that Naoto would have left within days of the protagonist's departure.

I'd definitely give this a read if they translated it though. My horrible use of time in my various playthroughs has always made Naoto feel like an eleventh hour character, and she probably deserves a better representation than that.

Hopefully there will be plenty of singing the Junes theme song. *Everyday's great at your Junes!*

I seemed to have missed the Naoto boat. I wanted to like her, but her only function as a character seemed to be getting people who hadn't played the game in a while up to speed quickly.

Also, just give me Persona 5 already. I haven't played a JRPG in years, and I'm starting to jones for one. I want to scratch that it's with P5 so I can return to not playing them for years.

#19 Posted by WatanabeKazuma (989 posts) -

@Rehtayne: Never forget.

In all seriousness though it makes perfect sense, most of the team would stay there but Rise and Naoto would definitely leave afterwards. Meeting through the TV's negates that anyway.

Yeah she is a great character to use, I forced her into my main party and she sweeps up in dungeons with the light and dark spells, just a little crappy against bosses though.. Her S-Link can be weirdly specific , one of the few that can be fucked up easily.

If I remember, it's one of the only 2 that can be reversed, but you kinda have to be a complete dick for that.

I used Naoto against the final boss with no problems.

Anyway, novel sounds interesting. I know it most likely won't get an official translation, but that's what live journal and other sites are for.

#23 Posted by AxleStukov (114 posts) -

So pre-orders for the novel have started, giving us this small image of the cover. Naoto sure has changed in only a year huh?

One year into the future, she probably killed Yosuke and stole it.

She looks like Aigis with Naoto's hair. But that's probably just the illusion of the thumbnail sized picture.

Well, that looks stupid. Very bland/generic anime character design. Not that I care that much since it will never be translated anyway and I doubt the Persona team will be involved with it.

Here's another pic:

(Geez, she's pretty much unrecognizable. She has weird anime antennas all over her scalp.)

Around 1.25 centimer a month on average. It doesn't!

#30 Posted by FLStyle (4594 posts) -
  • Crazy changes in the space of a year
  • In the Naoto epilogue of P4 she said she was staying in Inaba if only as a main home while she went solving cases elsewhere
  • I'll be very surprised if anything in the novel passes on to future games. Labelling it as non-canon for now.
#31 Posted by Bocam (3681 posts) -

I don't know if this was posted or not but the title of the novel is Persona x Detective.

Also I like the redesign.

#32 Posted by ImmortalSaiyan (4676 posts) -

I like Persona 4 a whole lot but all this spinoff stuff maybe going to far. I can only imagine how popular the game must be in Japan to warrant a stage production, magazine, anime, fighting game, psvita update, and now a novel.

In a setting that has a TV world, I don't think hair growth should be setting any standards for realism.

Also according to やらおん the Persona 4 team is totally involved in writing the novel

Ah. Its hard to get a grasp on how the artstyle looks based on that little cover image, which is why I didn't notice.

Good. The hair might be similar to the official picture, but she doesn't really look like a 17 year old in the fan art.

#38 Posted by Juno500 (382 posts) -

I don't really like that design, but the only thing I find unacceptable is that she's not wearing her awesome hat.

#39 Posted by Cloudenvy (5891 posts) -

I can't deal with long-haired Naoto, sorry guys.

Remember that she was only a first-year high school student in P4, so she was about fifteen years old. In the novel, I presume she's seventeen or eighteen. A year and change is a lot of time for an adolescent's body to mature.

It just says the story's a collaboration between 電撃文庫(Dengeki Bunko: The publisher) ×電撃マオウ(Dengeki Maou)×ペルソナチーム(Persona Team). Since Dengeki Maou is involved, the art is probably going to be done by the artist of the manga. They haven't announced a specific author (and they probably won't as ATLUS is weird like that).

Though the funny thing is the comments on 2ch which range from "Naoto looks perfect with long hair" to "the bike is a rip-off from Akira" to "It (Naoto) makes me feel sick"

Here's some more fan art

I don't know, duder. As much as I'm not into Rie's voiceacting most of the time, Laura's Rise wasn't great.
