Shoot The Core

The term is derived from the Gradius series of Shoot-em-Ups (AKA "shmups"), but means any shooter in which the goal is to destroy an integral component of your target in order to win. In many games this core is represented by a glowing orb, which causes the enemy to flash when you shoot it.

Typically represented as an orb or a glowing object, the core is the part of an enemy - more specifically, a boss enemy - which you must shoot in order to destroy it. "Shooting the core" is a concept born out of the Shoot-Em-Up genre.
Gorgon

The boss of Area 6 from Star Fox 64. This deadly weapon is equipped with robotic tentacles, truckloads of missiles, a teleportation system, and a hyper laser. Watch out, Fox!
Saucerer

This UFO-style mothership appears in Star Fox 64. It deploys an endless amount of fighters until its core weapon charges up enough energy to destroy a Cornerian base on Katina.
Vic Viper

The Vic Viper is the starring space fighter in the Gradius franchise. Its fame has also lent it appearances in many other Konami titles.
