    Overview

Miko are girls or young women who handle certain duties for Shinto shrines. Historically, they conveyed messages from the gods while in a shamanic trance, or performed ritual dances. In the modern era, miko help with the upkeep of a shrine, assist in certain rituals, and sell fortunes and trinkets to shrine visitors. They traditional dress is red hakama pants with a white haori jacket.

In video games, anime, or manga, miko are frequently portrayed as possessing spiritual powers or magical abilities.
