Apparently on GB its Civilization V > Halo: Reach

 Only on Giantbomb.com
Well, I thought I'd never see the day. In other news, Minecraft is a huge hit on Giantbomb.

Okay, carry on.

Pretty sure it has nothing to do with what game is better than the other. There's merely more activity going on in those forums, and considering Civ 5 just came out this week and Halo is already old news of course it's going to rank up higher on the forums.

That's my take on it anyway.

That's all it comes down to, really. Ryan's gushing over Civ 5 on the Bombcast mixed with the fact that Halo: Reach came out the week before attributes to this.

Yeah I know that. Its just surprising that a bunch of people are picking this thing up and talking about it than Halo Reach.

It took a while to dethrone MW2 from top position I think.

I wouldn't be surprised, but that was probably attributed to MW2 being a multiplatform game.

I personally avoid discussing Halo on these, or any other general gaming form because you're guaranteed to get a bunch of spam comments from people who dislike the series, regarldess of the topic.  If you want to discuss Halo, there are better places to do so that are free from 14 year olds who haven't even played it.

It's not just forum activity.  The popular games tab is populated based on the amount of traffic that individual game pages get, so if a lot of people were to check out the wikipage for a game like, say, Wonder Project J in one day, then the game would appear in the next day's popular games list.

That is true. MW2 I would say it a little different considering all of the "give us our dedicated servers" topics and any other thing that someone had to bitch about probably helped MW2 stay at the top spot for a while. I guess Halo Reach hasn't had enough problems for people to bitch profusely about which is nice.

It makes me happy to see that Giantbomb is all into Civ V.

So, clicks on the review would cause a game to rise right?

I believe that would be the case, yes.

This is also why Cat Girl Alliance stayed in the popular forums for weeks. Nobody was posting or changing the page, but views alone kept it there. Some games on the popular forums list are clicked on just because they are already there, and the name stuck out to people. It was a vicious cycle.

People have been waiting for Civ 5 for quite sometime. It's no surprise.

#19 Posted by RsistncE (4496 posts) -

Well obviously, since:

PC > 360

#20 Posted by NekuCTR (1663 posts) -

Probably because there's more to talk about in Civ V. If they had the number of plays for steam games I'm sure it would still be less than Halo: Reach, but because it is such an open ended game and it is attracting new players, it is getting a lot more attention on forums.

#21 Posted by Death_Unicorn (2838 posts) -

I like good games.

Although, if this were just based on forum activity, it seems a lot of people are trying Civlization and making help topics. Hell, I even had to make a topic to find a confirmation there isn't hotseat...

#22 Posted by AndrewB (7563 posts) -

I think it's because there's more to talk about, but I'd be happy if it was actually more popular. Calling it an amazing game would be an understatement. I wouldn't care what other people thought about the game, but the more people who buy it, the more likely they are to keep the series going and making it bigger and better.

#23 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11585 posts) -

All the popular forums tab is related to is the traffic that a certain page gets.  And thus, that's why Hentai games have been featured multiple times

However, on the actual subject of Civilization V, I'm actually pretty surprised at how actually popular that game is on the forums right now, especially among people who have never played a 4X game like that before. I guess Ryan's assertion that the game is super accessible really sold it to some people.

#24 Posted by elko84 (1058 posts) -

I was more stoked about Civ 5 coming out than Halo Reach

#25 Posted by valrog (3671 posts) -

I'm surprised to see Arcania there.

Civ V came out after Halo Reach

#27 Posted by griefersstolemykeyboard (359 posts) -

Persona 4 was like the top game from february 2009 till like september 2009 on GB, I wouldn't trust the forum rankings to much.

#28 Posted by Lies (3866 posts) -

That game changes pretty much every time a big release comes out

What's the point of this thread?

Tomorrow Reach will be #1 then the next day fucking Brute Force, or what ever game the Staff happen to mention on the bombcast as a joke.

I think it got a huge boost by people who read every review/watch the quick looks, because that puts them on that particular game's page. SInce Civ V's QL/review is more recent, it got more recent hits.

Number one rule about Halo on GB, don't talk about Halo. And MW2 was probably up there longer because of people complaining about balance issues.
#35 Posted by Brendan (7730 posts) -

I think at this point in the series, people are leery of talking about Halo on forums in general.  I avoid most topics because of the inevitable arguments that break out.

Obviously.  I dunno if you noticed this, but we here at Giant Bomb like good games.  It's only natural that Civ 5 is more popular here than Reach.

#39 Posted by Mikemcn (6967 posts) -

I sorta feel that people who play Civ 5 alot are on average, better to be around, than those who play Halo all the time.

Its good for the community.

#40 Posted by CitizenKane (10506 posts) -
@Coombs: That's because there's no way of tracking PC play other than through Steam and World of Warcraft has its own API that Giant Bomb uses.
#41 Posted by PrivateIronTFU (3874 posts) -

Yeah, and the next big game that comes out, it will be: New Game > Civ V.

#42 Posted by xyzygy (9935 posts) -

ME2 has been the most popular game for months and months here. From January to about July/August.

#43 Posted by DoctorWelch (2774 posts) -

I think any rational person would agree that the popularity of a certain games forum mean almost nothing.

Videos don't count towards popularity unless the viewers also check out the game page. Which they often will. Although associated with game pages, they don't appear under that game's path like reviews are.

Also, Recettear is more popular than Final Fantasy. Take that, Square Enix! :P

I remember a few weeks ago when there was like, three hentai games in that list. It was great.
