The majority of Sidewinder consists of wide, open space where players may drive vehicles freely. Built into each of the ends of the horseshoe are the bases for each team and on the inside of the horseshoe is a network of tunnels which house a number of pick-ups and weapons, and provide fast access to the other side of the map. To the north-east and north-west of the map teleporters can be found, leading to each of the bases, and there are a number of points around the edges of the map where cliffs provide an opportune spot for snipers. Sidewinder was remade as Avalanche in Halo 3, and the Halo: Reach map Breakpoint also bears strong resemblance to it.
