Sigma is the main character in Virtue's Last Reward as well as a major character in Zero Time Dilemma. He is one of the main characters of the Zero Escape Series.

Participation in the Third Nonary Game

Sigma was kidnapped from his car by Zero Sr., and woke up in a large facility with eight other people where he was forced to participate in the third Nonary game. Throughout the game, Sigma realized he, as well as another participant Phi, could "jump" between timelines where they made different decisions. It was by using the information gathered in these many timelines that the group was able to progress through the game.

As time went on, it became clear he was a man out of time, somehow 45 years ahead of when he was kidnapped. After seeing his face in the mirror and discovering he was an old man with robot arms and a robot eye, he realized that he himself was in fact Zero Sr. It was later explained to him how his future self had "jumped" into the consciousness of his current self, forcing the two versions of Sigma to switch. He did so to take place in another deadly game that Sigma as he currently was would never have been able to make it through alive. During the course of this game the deadly virus Radical-6 was released into the world, and the older Sigma also hoped to create a future where that did not happen.

His future self had gone to the trouble of creating the Third Nonary Game to unlock Sigma and Phi's jumping powers so they could begin their journey to become the kind of man he currently is. Soon after the game had completed, he jumped back to shortly after the game his older self had taken place in had completed, in a timeline where he failed to stop Radical-6 from being released.

    Sigma in the Future

Sigma arrived back a few months after Radical-6 had been released. There, he met Akane Kurashiki who he teamed with to create the future he had already seen. They went to a base on the moon where the Third Nonary game would take place, bringing along with them three eventual players of the game in cryostasis. He spent the next 45 years researching robotics and cloning to create Luna and Kyle, two more who who take part in the game. When the time came, he jumped back 45 years.

    Participation in the Decision Game

Along with Phi who had jumped back with him, Sigma joined the Mars Mission Test project where the game was known to take place. Soon after the nine participants arrived at the test site, they were kidnapped by a new Zero and brought to a bunker to begin the Decision Game.

Throughout the Decision Game many timelines were created, and in most of them Sigma died. In one of the timelines, Sigma and another participant named Diana were the only ones left alive in the bunker. They had plenty of food and were able to stay alive in the bunker for months, eventually falling in love. Diana became pregnant and gave birth to twins. However, they were running dangerously low on food and thus developed a plan to save their babies. In the bunker was a time machine, which would copy the make up of a person and send them to another similar machine at a different time period. However, it only had enough room for the babies and took months to recharge. The originals stayed where they were and died along with their parents, but their copies were sent to the past. One grew up to be Phi; the other grew up to be Delta, the Zero of the Decision game.

There were two timelines in which Sigma survived. In one, the group mastered the ability to "jump" and jumped to a timeline where Zero let them all go before the game had even begun. In this timeline Zero reveals that he had done everything to prepare the group for an even greater coming threat, the extent of which has yet to be revealed. Because the timeline diverged from the one Sigma traveled back from to the point he never did so in the first place, he stayed in his younger body.

In the other, the future he was trying to prevent occurs. Radical-6 is released, and he loses his arms and an eye in the course of this version of the game. He switches back with his younger self hoping that version of him will do better, and returns to his grim future shortly after the third Nonary Game ended.
