Would you believe the Wii was the category with the longest list of possible nominees and one of the toughest, most contentious decisions? It's true, and it's a sign of what a great year the Wii really had. But we had to get it down to three, and that's what we did.

Giant Bomb's 2009 Wii Game Of The Year

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Nintendo does such a good job of dominating the software lineup on its own platforms that we could almost point out that Shattered Memories is made by someone else and stop right there. But that would be doing a disservice to all the bold, unexpected moves in this reboot of Konami's venerated survival horror series. Shattered Memories strips out the silly monster combat and focuses on psychological horror and a deep, pervasive sense of disorientation that forces you to stumble through the inexplicable, unsettling world of Silent Hill without ever really knowing exactly what's going on or where the game is leading you.

It wouldn't be sporting of us to give away the ending, though the way it masterfully focuses and resolves the chaos of the storyline is one of the best reasons to play Shattered Memories. But getting to that point is very much an experience worth having in its own right. The smart use of the Wii's unique control features, like the tinny cell phone calls that squawk out of the remote and the simple but effective correspondence of the pointer to your flashlight, make your exploration of Silent Hill eminently engaging. But the game wouldn't have topped our Wii list if it weren't for its expert handling of a malleable storyline that's both deeply unsettling and tastefully mature.

In a year that saw fantastic first-party releases like Punch-Out!!, Wii Sports Resort, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was a real surprise, and a reminder that Nintendo isn't the only company who can make great original games on the Wii.

Runners-Up: Wii Sports Resort, Rabbids Go Home

#5 Posted by Metroid545 (1823 posts) -

i'm surprised New super mario bros wii wasn't even a runner up

Great choice.

NICE! Way to go with the unpredictable choices, GB.

#8 Posted by Jacob816 (136 posts) -

Does anyone know if the PS2 version is as good?

#9 Posted by Legend (2659 posts) -

Brad probably called this one.

I find myself suprised that I actually care about a Silent Hill game... Might have to summon my wii from dust hell.

#11 Posted by Amberella (163 posts) -

Hell yeah! Been meaning to play this game!! What a great choice! =D
#12 Posted by SpaceDandie (256 posts) -

Brad definitely called it.

#13 Posted by MannAlive (155 posts) -

I'll have to try this one after all.  Huge SH fan, but the reviews have been all over the place.  Damn it, now I have to decide for myself.  I hate that.

#14 Posted by SleepyDoughnut (1212 posts) -

saw this one coming after it won best ending.

#15 Posted by Jeust (10654 posts) -

My first buy of the year... :p

#16 Edited by handlas (2682 posts) -

I rented this game and the cop looked completely different as well.  She was brunette....completely buttoned up...kind of a bitch actually :p.

Plus I remember your orignal quick look.  You went to a bar at one point.  I didn't go to a bar.  Instead I ended up at a diner where I met the cop (you talked to a bartender).

Pretty kewl.  Wish I had a WIi for it...I rented it at my bro's house.

This is how survival horror games should be.

These videos kick ass!!

It's says something about GB wii game reviews when the wii game of the year only got 4 stars but still won the section. If it was so good why did it not get five ? I have not played the game so it maybe just the best out of a bad bunch but I still think they under played SMB wii.

#21 Posted by Konanda (627 posts) -

I agree with what is present in this article.
#22 Posted by ThomasP (1656 posts) -

Great pick, guys.

#23 Posted by AndrewB (7617 posts) -

I already know how the game ends, and I still want to play it. I hope you guys allow some kind of full disclosure, spoiler talk about this game at some point. I'd really love to hear the more specific reactions to things.

I want a wii now wow that game looks amazing

#25 Posted by Shifty_Mcfly (210 posts) -

Whoa, hey there busty cop.

#26 Posted by Darkstar614 (1098 posts) -

Hell yeah. Totally agree with this choice.

#27 Posted by buzz_killington (3532 posts) -

This game was just so different from anything I've ever played. And it couldn't be what it is on any other platform.

This as an Endurance Run would be so awesome.

#30 Posted by dhuff (120 posts) -

I want to play it, but I don't want to pay for it... a conundrum.

Wow, I got to admit, this caught me way off guard. Makes me kinda want to go play it now...

Stop obsessing over scores.

I'm not surprised this won Giant Bomb's GOTY for the Wii. I'm also very glad that it won it.

Wow! Silent Hill deserves it, but New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn't even in the runners up? I can't wait to hear an explanation on the podcast.

I really wish those FAQ people would stop trying to deconstruct the way the game reacts to certain player behaviors. It's a hell of a task, and it's crazy that they are able to do it, but I'd rather not have the illusion "shattered" so to speak. I guess the easy way out is just to not look at the FAQ though, so it's not too bad.

Edit: OK, just finished the Quick Look. It seems their reasoning for Silent Hill winning, and probably why NSMBW wasn't in the running, was because of the way it used the Wii's technologies. I can see how New Super Mario Bros. isn't quite a Wii game, despite being exclusive to the platform. Good call guys!

It's not out yet, but I kind of doubt that it will be.
#35 Posted by ThomasP (1656 posts) -

I jumped twice while watching that quick look. This game laughs in the face of all the other survivor horror games released this gen.

#36 Posted by CptBedlam (4451 posts) -

That was kinda painful to watch in the end when Brad ran all the way back and didn't realize it ... it wasn't THAT hard to see. :P

btw... Jeff obviously knows his Twin Peaks!

I laughed my ass off the 3rd time Brad made a wrong turn and didn't notice

"Door door door! Door door door! Ah! You're back where you started!"

Ryan's freaking out made this whole Quick Look RE worthwhile.

#39 Posted by AndrewB (7617 posts) -

Anyone know when the best N-Gage game award will be coming?

#40 Posted by zombie2011 (4973 posts) -

A new New Super Mario Bros Wii quick look would have been awesome.

I've been playing this game and the nightmare sections are heart pounding. When things ice over, a small bead of sweat rolls down my forehead. I've almost finished my first play-through, looking forward to changing things up on my next.

#42 Posted by osuzoo08 (90 posts) -

game looks awesome wished I still had a Wii I would pick this up and I don't even like these kind of games.

#43 Posted by Crono (2670 posts) -

Well I totally have to play this game now.  It just seems too awesome to pass up.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii plays it safe compared to even half of the things that Shattered Memories does and does successefully.

awesome video

#47 Posted by Rhaknar (5939 posts) -

i love how the guys actually did another quicklook for it, they could easily just have used the previous one... insane dedication, another reason why this is without a doubt the best site around

This seems like the perfect game to play with some friends around, just for that Ryan-type reaction of everybody yelling out instructions and trying to be helpful, while probably just confusing the player worse
#49 Posted by Knives (711 posts) -

I wish Little King's Story got a little more love on this site. That game was fantastic.

#50 Posted by Capum15 (4901 posts) -

Oh man. Watching another chase after the first Quick Look was still intense as hell, especially with the good old "Runrunrun!" by the others watching.
