    Silent Hill

    Franchise »

Silent Hill is a survival horror game franchise that revolves around the tourist town of Silent Hill; its dark link with the occult and its co-existence with its two other-dimensional forms, "Otherworld" and "Nowhere".

I want to play silent hills games but dont have a ps2...

Im unsure of how to play them because alot people say the hd collection is just shit. I looked at some videos and can see why people were made about it the fog was removed and it was alot easier to see and graphics actually looked worse from few videos i looked at since it looked less dark it was worse.

Problem being i dont have a ps2 and for some reason its not on psn.

If you have an original Xbox both 2 and 4 were released on that as well. There's also PC ports of 2, 3 and 4 but I've heard there's issues with those as well, though not as bad as the HD versions.

Edit: Actually the PS2 version of 4 is on PSN so you go get that one there.

You can download the first one off PSN for sure, at least in North America. Then 2, 3, and 4 can be played on PC. You would be doing an enormous disservice to yourself if you play the HD collection first, so I would recommend you avoid it.

As I recall the PC port of 2 was fine, but the later games had issues? It's probably easier to find a PS2 and PS2 copies of the games than tracking down those PC releases though, none of them are available on Steam or GOG, and I haven't seen any of them in stores in many years, whereas the PS2 games are still relatively cheap and easy to find (with the exception of Shattered Memories), at least here in Sweden.

I don't think the HD Collection is that bad. They actually patched it to fix some(if not all) of the issues, if I recall.

I have the HD collection for the PS3, and the quality is satisfatory now. It's not up to the level of the ps2/xbox/pc versions, but works well. The fog was reintroduced in the patch. The only visual blemish is in the HD version of SH2, in the boat part, where the water is rendered poorly.

In SH3 in the beginning there is also no fog, and music is sometimes missing, but, as I had never played SH3 before, I didn't notice anything unusual.

Overall the ports in the PS3 are satisfatory. Not the best version of the games, but their quality don't detract from the experience of the games. Especially if you're playing it for the first time.

Silent Hill Downpour is also a good Silent Hill game, and arguably the best one after the original 4 games. It is heavily inspired by the first games, features the biggest explorable town, and interesting side-quests.

The HD collection is really freakin' bad, it wasn't just the fog being missing that ruined it, most of the glaring problems weren't fixed, and the ones that were are only fixed in the PS3 version.

The issues are too numerous to even list, a review that covers everything that's wrong with it is the length of a movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wya4XhTPMcc

Alongside what others have said, there's a wii 'reimagining' of Silent Hill Shattered Memories

Not played it myself but it got pretty good reviews. Think it follows the plot of the first game but with some changes like different paths, it's reasonably priced on amazon so it might be worth a look if you have access to a wii or wiiU

(I think it's the same as the PS2 version, not entirely sure though tbh)

2 is a bit messy, controls-wise especially. 3 and 4 were alright. Homecoming is a shit game in general, so I couldn't care less.

@bcooper21: me personally I would start with 2 and then 3 and see if your not tired of the series by then before going after others. For your options I don't know because your not telling us what systems you have. There might be backward compatibility for some of these games with the Xbox 360.

I played the HD collection versions of 2 and 3 and I loved them dearly even though they fucked them up hard. Of course I found out about the problems afterward but still.

I understand if you don't want to get it though

Xbox 360 plays 2 and 4 apparently, 4 me personally I started hating that game once you had to start escorting the ai character.
