Daves Dwarfdom Decent (D)thread.

#1 Edited by Akyho (1745 posts) -

After the offical announcement of Dave's Dwarfdom Descent (D)into Dwarfortress of which I hoped it was so when I saw the title. I figured with it going to be a series of videos and certificated discussion thread would be nice. We dont have such so we have this.

I personally am pretty excited, after syncing 20 hours into DF....before I got a new graphics card (I know its not graphics heavy but my computer was apparently shit at the time) and found out the game speed isnt as slow as 5 minutes for a Dwarf to leave a small 3 square room. The speed increase was as if I put fast forward on vs what I had played it at.

So is Dave going to use the May green Tile set? or any Tile set's? Is he just going to go full Rogue like Raw?

Edit: Dyslexia folks! its fun! so yeah used the wrong Descent for the title. However Decent is what this thread is trying to be, so the title still fits.

Way to go, you misspelled descent. Twice.

I remember him mentioning thinking about using a tileset so don't be surprised if he has one. I think it would be nice because ASCII isn't super aesthetically pleasing. Actually it isn't even marginally aesthetically pleasing.

He's not a very decent speller is he?

Tilesets? Your eyes can't handle the amazing next-next-gen graphics or something, blindy?

Wow, the people in this thread are absolute jackasses. So the fuck what if he misspelled something?

He will probably go with the default, but who knows.

Fun fact! I am dyslexic! So its always a fun time for me use text. I go over it over and over, however Firefox's spell checker is just like all spell checkers...still relies on the person who cant spell to choose the right spelling. Spell checkers are shit. So feel free to become my own personal spellchecker if you all care so much.

Hey guys I just want to point out that Im kind of famous!!!

Hello, I'm here to add absolutely nothing to the discussion and complain about someone's spelling errors. So basically, I'm taking up space on the internet that could be better used for porn. Maybe even dwarf porn.

Anyways... I think Dave shouldn't use tile-sets at all. Kind of ruins the point, I think.

Edit: oh shit, I didn't use a thesaurus for the second "i think". Only English that meets University standards is proper for Giant Bomb, thankyouverymuch.

Here, take your pick, arsefalls:

Main Entry:
think [thingk] Show IPA
Part of Speech:verb
Definition:believe; anticipate
Synonyms:assume, be convinced, comprehend, conceive, conclude, consider, credit, deem, determine, envisage, envision, esteem, estimate, expect, fancy, feature, feel, foresee, gather, guess, hold, image, imagine, judge, plan for, presume, project, realize, reckon, regard, see, sense, suppose, surmise, suspect, take, understand, vision, visualize

OH SHIT SANKIS! The attempted murder of Mystic the Mongol! Killer of dozens of goblins! Defeatist of a Colossus!

DONT HURT ME!

For everyone else anyone to understand what that means and are interested in reading up Dwarf Fortress games going crazy. Check out the legendary story of Boatmurdered http://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/Introduction/ There is evil elephant wars, Lava WMD's and hilarity.

@Sankis: I remember that thread. It made me try DF for the first time.

Man it's making me feel old thinking about back when this game only had one Z level and the only way to build a farm was by using a potentially world-ending floodgate system.

I set up a system that had everyone clear out, flood the room, flush it out, then enter. It felt more like I was creating space age drugs than simple underground foods.

I haven't played since then...I still however install it in every PC I own. I need to go back to it.

After watching the live stream I'm excited to try this game out. I had heard of Dwarf Fortress before but it looked kind of impenetrable to me. Turns out maybe I was wrong because I felt like I understood exactly what was going on and why Dave was doing it. I think I'm going to pick up that book he talked about though.

Ever try using dictation? Windows 7 has in included and all you need is a microphone (headset is best). That way you can just speak and it'll type everything out. It works pretty good.

Which tileset was Dave using?

#18 Posted by Sankis (67 posts) -

Looked like Mike Mayday as part of the Easy Newbie pack.

Don't get the book. Online tutorials are good enough. Dave really overdid it as far as preparation goes. It's not necessarily a bad thing to do but I think he overprepared. Most of the fun is learning the basics and then diving in and dying.

Also Blizzard liked Boatmurdered and by extension Dwarf Fortress so you all should too. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/the-burning-axe-of-sankis

@Akyho: Don't let assholes ruin your time man.

Same dudes nobody liked in class go on the internet to snivel every time somebody can't get something exactly right. As long as it's not a wall of text and the intention was clear the first 4 posts on your thread shouldn't be derailed by assholes who can stroke their forum dick.

Anyways how was it?

It appears as always Whiskey Media decides that the live stuff on Friday can wait. Hopefully it shows up before midnight, nothing I like more than paying just to see some obscure shit only to have it at a time where people probably have something productive to do and then just sit on my hands until it shows up.

He was using a tile-set called Phobius.

Dave I think bought the books to see if he would like it. The books are kind of like a validation that its significant enough for someone to spend money to make a physical book. Once reading through he got the itch to play it.

That is pretty awesome Sankis. I never put it all together at the time, a friend picked it up and realized the actual stats were bad however the inscription made us all laugh.

The chat was divided, there was people being introduced to the whole game and excited by it. The other was people going "WTF IS GOING ON!? The graphics are making my eyes hurt!" "Id rather give Steve Ballmer a rimjob, than play this!"

Things is they were using a nice tileset. So the graphics were a good as they were going to get. And Id love to give Steve Ballmer a Rimjob is that is as fun as DF.

While those who already play DF were enjoying it. Its fun to see Dave confidently pronounce things, those who know in agreement with Dave. Then Vinny and Drew going "Why does that make sense!? You need to know that the chicken's knee is wet?! HOW IS THAT USEFUL!!"

Edit: The archive is up now!

I am Dyslexic, however I have spent long enough to be able to overcome most of the short comings, it is just a few spellings I forget and need a reminder. I am not severely Dyslexic unlike other people. I am of a serviceable quality and on my A game I surpass half the people that would pick on my spelling. I am just not consistent.

ANYWAYS!!! All talk of my Dyslexia and spelling is OVER. I had a previous thread on these forums descend into two camps. Those calling me an asshole for being offended because of the way I reacted to the ass holism towards my spelling and Dyslexia. And then the other camp were people of varying understanding trying to help me. I am fine. It was one late night dyslexic post that apparently made little sense. And this is a few spelling mistakes.

Overall It all derailed the topic at hand. So Dwarf Fortress!

@Akyho: Yeah I take back my bitchy comments, the video's up.

So now I'm gonna head into it right now before passing out.

So I ended up buying Gnomoria. I've already played Dwarf Fortress before, but I wanted to try something different. I have to say, it isn't bad at all and it has a demo. It's on Desura for I think $8. Along with Dwarf Fortress and the friendly newb pack which are both free.

Dave mentioned it and I wanted to check up on it. However......I couldn't figure out how to spell Gnomoria and google would not help me. So Ill give a go of the demo some time and see how it is.
