4.5 gig....Update?

#1 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2811 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Sleeping Dogs just patched for me on Steam and the thing is 4.5 gigs. Anyone find patch notes or any info on wtf that thing is?

#2 Posted by Oldirtybearon (3238 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Doesn't Steam redownload the entire game whenever it patches?

#3 Posted by SirOptimusPrime (1570 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

*shrug*

Dunno.

@Oldirtybearon: that seems to be spotty. Some games (Witcher 2, frustratingly) did it and others (Torchlight 2) don't.

#4 Edited by Colourful_Hippie (2811 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Oldirtybearon: Nope. Even if it did Sleeping Dogs was larger than 4.5 gigs.

#5 Posted by L33tfella_H (901 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Oldirtybearon: The reason for this is that Steam doesn't really have a patching process per se. It just replaces files with updated versions when it comes to patching. for Witcher 2 and other games, game data is compiled into huge files which usually means patching involves replacing that entire file.

Sounds like that would be the answer that is looking for then.

Yeah that makes sense then.

Oh jeez hate it when a huge update just comes along out of nowhere especially when you are just about to play the game and have to wait 2 more hours.

#9 Posted by Morello (46 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Looks like it is the new DLC seeing as a load of the new files include the name "zodiac", and the new DLC is called "Zodiac Tournament".

Steam always used to have to download any files that had changed as they had no inbuilt patching ability. Now they have the ability to patch the files for selected (I don't think all) games - that's what the "Steam has to convert these files to a more efficient format" stuff was / is about if you try and run a game that hasn't been updated for a while.

#10 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2811 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Morello: Zodiac Tournament? I must have missed out on future DLC news.

#11 Posted by Pr1mus (2545 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

I paused the update and debating whether to uninstall the game or not. With the data cap i have i can't waste 4.5 GB for a game i'm probably done playing for a while. I haven't cleared everything but what's left to do is mostly more of the same anyway. If they're just forcing the download of the DLC unto everyone and unlock it later if you buy it then that's just bullshit.

You can always set games in Steam to not update automatically if you have a dataplan or low bandwidth.

My datacap isn't great but it's never a problem for "normal" patches. They can push 10-100 MBs patches all day long and it's fine. 4.5GB however is a different story.

#14 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2811 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Pr1mus: You can set specific games to not update.

#15 Edited by mnzy (2854 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

I know, it sucks. They probably have to do it like this, because it's the most universal method.

What bothers me even more is that I can't put a speed limit on downloads in Steam. 30GB Max Payne cripples my internet for more than day.

#16 Posted by Alexandru (301 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Colourful_Hippie: maybe you had some corrupted files and steam is redownloading it.

Your bandwidth limit is bullshit, good sir.

Had it as well and with my max data-cap I'm not happy.

Steam should implement a dropdown somewhere that would let you pick the highest amount of auto-upload would you would want for a patch.

#19 Edited by Pr1mus (2545 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Colourful_Hippie: I know that. But the convenience of automatic updates is great and only becomes a problem when they reach this size which is like... never before for me. At least i don't remember any games i own doing this. There's just no way to know which games will pull this crap unfortunately.

This would be a great solution.

If what @Morello: said is true then it's probably the new DLC because I remember something similar happening when that halloween DLC was coming out.

#21 Posted by cloudnineboya (338 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

hahaha. this solves my issue ?my internet was real sloggy and i was miffed as to way,so after reading this checked steam and it was bloody updating sleepy dowgs!!!!

#22 Posted by believer258 (8170 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Yeah, I got the same update. It's nuts. I'll have to let it download overnight.

Sleeping Dogs Extended Cut

#24 Posted by cloudnineboya (338 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

so is this free dlc .

#25 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2811 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@cloudnineboya: No, the same thing happened around the time the halloween DLC was coming out so I don't see this one being any different.

#26 Edited by cloudnineboya (338 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Colourful_Hippie:

Ok thank you. steam is weird with its updates, 3 times witcher2 had to be reinstalled i understand the extended cut but just for patches that's crazy

#27 Posted by Paindamnation (672 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

MOAR SLEEPING DOGS. My game of the year. Screw Journey.

#28 Edited by Serpentenema (186 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

I still haven't picked up "Nightmare in North Point" since my internet is now just dicks. If this "Zodiac" stuff is more missions, I might as well pick up the Drunken Fist dlc along with all of those. THIS DOG IS ABOUT TO BE UP AND ACTIVE!

#29 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2811 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Serpentenema: If you've kept your copy of the game up to date then you should already have the halloween DLC installed. Buying it only gives you the key.

#30 Posted by Serpentenema (186 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Colourful_Hippie: I got the 360 version due to not having a crazy desktop yet.

#31 Posted by benspyda (1415 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Mine just started to do the same, so paused it because I ain't gonna be playing it again for a while anyway. Fuck a 4.5gig download for a patch.

#32 Posted by Bistromath (467 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Extended Emma Stone scenes.

#33 Edited by granderojo (1612 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

I would KILL for some Chunking Express like DLC. Would play right into all that girlfriend stuff and the payoff you get from that in vanilla.

The Mamas and Papas music license can't be that expensive, they're all about bunch of counter culture hippies. Probably cheap as hell.

#35 Posted by envane (1094 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Colourful_Hippie: yeah the witcher was bad , it only was one fuile according to steam , so updating a small patch meant an entire redownload , magicka is the only other game i know of that does this for the entire game .. its the devs and steam not communicating , .. anyways if its that size then they have at least cut the steam file info into some slightly smaller sections

the recent farcry patch i swear was a few gigs

#36 Posted by Ghost_Cat (1057 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Yeah they release large updates to prepare for releasing DLC.

#37 Posted by zenmastah (535 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Really hope the DLC is lbigger than 1hr like the Halloween one was.

This.

#39 Posted by mak_wikus (386 posts) - 5 months, 30 days ago

The main file in The Witcher 2 folder is 9,5 gigs. It had to dowload it again for the update. That's why Steam's update policy is flawed. If you bought TW2 in retail or GoG you had to download a file no bigger than 200 megs.

And now I'm off to buy more Shleepy Dawgz.

Sorry to disappoint you then. I heard it's even shorter, and doesn't have any achievements. NINP took me longer than an hour, but that's also because I was going for all the achievements...
