Mark another one off for "Surprise of 2012" along with Spec ops because this game from what I've played is pretty damn good. My PC experience started off bumpy and still is bumpy (the game literally takes 8 minutes and 5 seconds to start). However, this may just be a steam thing but once you're in the game its really fun and they do the PC version justice with that texture pack, characters are a bit blocking but lighting and pretty much everything else is awesome. The game looks excellent on PC and runs great too (once you get in it). I'm plannin on writing something bigger up later but overall I'm really enjoying it, especially the hand to hand combat. Anyway, what do you guys think? I'm gonna add some screenshots I took to show off how good it looks on PC!

Recreating the thrill of Hong Kong action movies, Sleeping Dogs is an open-world crime adventure that tells the story of undercover officer Wei Shen as he infiltrates a notorious Triad organization in the streets of a fictional Hong Kong.
Guys...this game is pretty good
I have been enjoying it too on the PC. Giving it the DX11 treatment has been a nice bonus to those who have capable cards. The game does play like any other open-world crime game, but a couple of things make it stand out, which are the fighting and story (both which are fun). The setting alone also makes the game feel refreshing for this predictable genre.
Explain further and ill tell you.So how is the gameplay? Does it play like every other open world crime game?
Sorry guys I was leaving for work, wanted to add more details so just ask questions if your curious about something and I'll answer the best I can
Darksiders 2 will be a load of shit, mark my words.
This game however, is the dogs bollocks - pick it up or pre-order it if you're Briton!
What are your specs, OP? What fps are you getting?I've got:
3.6 amd quad core/ 3.8 turbo
Hd 7950
8 gb of ram
Playing on 1080p 46' tv
Runs mostly 60 with a few drops in busy areas with lots of lights and shadows. There is one setting that cuts my frames in half for some reason so I put it on high instead of extreme, can't think of what it is off the top of my head (might be due to beta drivers). But ya other than that it runs pretty damn smooth
@Jrinswand: Specs:
- I7 Ivy bridge
- GTX670 2GB VRAM
- 8GB RAM
- No liquid cooling, no overclocking
That's all you need to know. Everything is turn up max, except for AA (set to normal), and I get a steady average of 60 fps. Strangely, I don't think this game is very optimized for nVidia cards, seeing as how my card, along with many others, are producing high temperatures. It shouldn't be that hot, and I think performance should be a little higher.
It's activated in steam and that's alldoes the PC version have steamworks or gfwl or anything?
Hard question to answer. If you mean the feeling of it then ya they hit the atmosphere right on the head. I've never been before but I'd say it's very believable. Is this game as good as Kane & Lynch 2 running through the streets of Shanghai?
Some Square fella said that Activision were crazy to not finish and release it, I expected those words to be PR, got proven wrong bigtime.
So first thought, "wtf activision"
Second thought, "oh right games that sell less than three million copies in three months mean nothing to them"
:/
Honestly I can't see myself playing Darksiders 2 or Sleeping Dogs anytime soon cause I still playing a ton of Persona 4 Arena. It is a shame cause I thought they both look really cool but at the rate I am playing Persona 4, I will be done with that by the time the busy season comes so I may be able to get to these two games later on when they are cheaper.
I have it installed, just waiting for the work day to end.Read my first post again. A lot of people are having issues with the game starting. It basically boots to the screen with the logos and stops. Luckily I fell asleep waiting and found out it just takes forever to start up. Hopefully it will be fixed by the end of the day but if it seems like nothing's happening I'd wait at least 10 minutes before restarting. Other than that, no issues to report
How's the driving feel? More GTA4-ish and realistic? Or more Saint's Row-ish and arcadey? How's the object pop-in at high speeds? Are you using an SSD or HDD?
I'm cool with having a sleeper hit. I think I'll look into checking this out after the surprisingly positive buzz around it.
I almost bought this, but I think 45 is still a bit much for what seems to be a "GTA-ish" game with admittedly cool-looking hand-to-hand combat. I'll definitely get it when it goes for cheaper.
Really enjoying the hand to hand combat in this game. It is like Batman without that weird glide to next counter effect so you can not spam on the counter button. I am only about an hour in so the story seems stereotypical so far. The driving is the lowest point so far. Although you do get used to the weird ramming mechanic, it just looks weird.
@Sackmanjones: How's the role-playing? Can you have an eventful day in the life of this guy without invoking any missions? Do you need to eat or rest or do anything else like that for basic survival? Do the crowds react realistically when you bump into someone, punch them, or pop off a few rounds? So you can eat and drink stuff around the city. Those give you boosts like damage reduction and faster health regen etc etc. you don't HAVE TO do it but it's in your best interest too. You can buy clothes and cars and I even bought a bed for my house. So it has some role playing stuff if that's your thing

Crowds as well as your character react well. You will run into people, knock em down or juke out of there way in a chase or even just running for fun. Your guy even throws in a line or two if someone doesn't move and knocks you on your ass.
Driving I honestly haven't had an issue with. It's definitely more on the saints row side but not nearly as crazy for lack of a better term(?) you can do car to car jumping, like jump off your motorcycle onto a truck and then you have to shimmy to the drivers seat which is kinda cool. On my pc I have seen little to no pop in while driving. And I'm using an Hdd, but the game still shouldn't take 8 minutes to start that's just crazy
Anyway to add on hand to hand is so damn fun. It's an iteration on batman but there is no gliding and no endless combos. At the most right now I can hit a dude 4 times and end with a heavy kick. There are para to upgrade this like disarms and better takedowns. But grappling opens up options like takedowns or slamming a guys head into a wall. It's very hard hitting, brutal and fun.
Last thing, movement is very smooth. During chases you can climb up walls dodge people and slide across cars and tables with ease.
They said the pc version specifically is more dense. But it's more barren at night compared to say. It's still not super packed but it's for the best since you engage in some pretty fast chases. But I think they are more populatedJust curious: are the streets in the final product as desolate as they looked in the Quick Look? Because... Yeah, not really realistic.
@MrKloroxThat's probably the best way to handle that type of stuff for this game. Makes me think of potions in The Witcher. Have you opened up any side missions yet? If so, does it seem like they proceduralize at all, or does it seem like they have limited numbers?
It definitely sounds cool so far.
@Sackmanjones said:The witcher 2 is a perfect example of how it works. Know your going into a rough fight? Drink one of them energy drinks to get a damage boost. Also if you wear the same type of clothing together you can receive bonuses. Right now I think I do 5% more melee damage.@MrKloroxThat's probably the best way to handle that type of stuff for this game. Makes me think of potions in The Witcher. I havent played a ton but difficulty seems ok, didn't check to see if there are settings and honestly I haven't even used a gun yet, it's been all hand to hand. Now that stuff is the (I know cliche) but easy to learn hard to master. If your patient you can do well but be over ambitious and you get your ass kicked
So right now I see 2 two types of side missions. One is basically a very small quick event like a lady asking me to drive her car into the river for insurance money. Quick and easy. Now I could be wrong, this may be actually part of the main mission but I'm treating it as a side mission for now, There are missions where you are directly helping the cops out, they are much more in depth (than the previous one I mentioned) and even have more than one part. The first one I did was to get evidence of a drug dealer and get proof he is selling. Now I need to find evidence on another guy and eventually I'll get a conclusion on the mini story.
Like I said, I haven't played much but that's what I get from the mission structure. I guess I should note from my short experiences that the characters are well written and are voiced great.
Awesome. Definitely let us know if you start gaining permanent bonuses or any other facets of character building. The outfit sets make me think of Red Dead Redemption. It would be cool to be able to buy a thick leather jacket and suddenly be more resistant to damage when falling off a motorcycle, or athletic shoes that let you run faster but kick weaker. And be able to keep both bonuses while looking like a total tool.
And thanks for the info.
@Sackmanjones:
Thanks for posting your impressions and answering all these questions! It's making my work day go by faster to read these little tidbits rather than just jonesing to be home and playing Sleeping Dogs.
Would anyone recommend buying it? Darksiders 2 shouldn't come into because i'm definitely not buying that. Is this worth a rental instead or what?
I miss jumping into the windshield to steal cars, and although you can leap from car to another nearby car it is not as insane as in Saints Row. (Saints Row kind of spoiled me)
Played about an hour of it, The driving still feels good in the game, (just need to get used to traffic driving on the left side) the view distance while you're driving is great considering how much detail is in the city. They do thing in Saints Row where they show the turn arrows.
