EDIT 1: I think [the fighting system] may have just clicked for me.

EDIT 2: Welp, I started a fresh game after beating it once, and managed to complete almost all of the drug busts, including the one in the parking lot where you have to fight off like twenty dudes, all with the starting attacks, (no upgrades). So, I feel pretty okay with the system now.

I actually enjoyed the fighting.

Whatever. It works fine up to three guys, but it becomes an incomprehensible fucking mess of confusion with any more than that. Broken game is broken.

So how does this make you feel?

I honestly didn't have a problem with the fighting system. I was able to pull off counters and combos pretty well even with 10 guys. But everyone has there own opinion.

What system are you playing on.

Haha, seriously? The combat system is a joke. Long and arduous as fuck fights with up to ten guys, eight of which are grapplers who can kill you in two hits and the guys with tire irons who can do the same. Counters barely worked properly, not even registering half the time, and I couldn't even get out an actual full combo to get an upper hand without being interrupted ten times by some counter that I couldn't even hit because I was in the middle of a kick.

Also, the whole, "face time to help you in combat!" is one of the most broken fucking things I've ever seen.

This shit is a fucking joke. Shame on you people for championing this bullshit.

I really don't understand why you feel this way. Is there something wrong with your TV where you're getting lag? I suck at video games but I destroyed the Fight Clubs with ease, and the last rounds of those you fight like 15 guys at once. I died maybe 15 times the entire game.

I've always thought it was stupid in Assassin's Creed that you would jump into a group of guys and they would politely wait for their turn to get neck stabbed. That combat looked dull in the first game and has gotten even dumber as guards now have guns and they still stand there and do nothing while their friend gets butchered. It's good that something like Sleeping Dogs is at least trying to make a combat system that isn't so ridiculously stupid.

#13 Posted by toots (455 posts) -

Uh oh! sounds like somebody didn't have any fun! I'm sorry you didn't have any fun, I hope you can find another game that makes you happier than sleeping dogs. Also, I know this is important to you, so I really hope that, with time, these wounds of yours will heal, and that you'll see that life does get better, and sometimes games can be fun even if things don't work just quite the way you'd like them to. Again, sorry to hear you didn't have any fun, and I am truly very sorry for potentially liking something that you emphatically do not.

Good luck, you are in all of our prayers-

Love,

the GB community.

If the counters did more damage, I think it'd be fine. The problem is you counter with little to no damage output and the expectation is to go into a full on combo, but you can't because after your second jab, you have to counter somebody else, so everything just turns into this chip-away style that takes far longer than it should. I have the most fun when I can separate one or two guys away from the rest, but they all swarm you and it's frustrating. And when I say combos, I'm talking full combos, not just a one-two jab.

Yeah no offense man but your complaints make it seem like you just aren't very good at the system. I found countering worked fine and most of the time it would work mid animation, they certainly aren't as forgiving as the Arkham series counters but they are completely functionable. Grapplers are easy since they pretty much never block so you just beat the shit out of them, and I rarely fought more than two armed enemies.

I just beat 10 guys at once in one of the fight clubs and never got hit. Sorry, but you must not be that good at the combat. It works fine. The counter system punishes you on purpose if you counter too early or mash the button you are going to get fucked and not hit the counter. Also, lock on is your friend. Lock on to one guy and then you can poke at the other guys with directional shots too keep them at bay while you deal with the target your locked onto. This is by far one of the best melee systems out there.

#17 Posted by Alkaiser (358 posts) -

I don't know much about Sleeping Dogs, but if its similar to the Batman games then yeah I probably wouldn't find the combat that entertaining either. I found them extremely boring and repetitive.

#29 Posted by Ares42 (2617 posts) -

While I haven't played the game too much myself yet, from what I've seen people that complain about the system hasn't really figured it out. So far I've found that if you just try to do your normal counter, hit+++ stuff it's not really great, but if you start grabbing people and use the environment it's excellent. The game also does a poor job at telling you that it's easy to "quick-use" environmental objects by just running people into them. To use a fight I had as an example, I fought three guys on the third floor of a building, and instead of actually beating them up I just threw them all over the railing into the pavement below.

#30 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) -

I think the system just clicked for me.

Also the leg break is your friend. It stuns all the other guys which allows you to whip some ass.

Well glad to hear your starting to get use to the combat system. All it took was alittle time to get use to, see its not so bad. Now you'll be fighting just like bruce lee.

It only took two pages of calling people idiots and saying how the combat system is broken to get there!

I don't know for sure as I never actually experienced it, but fighting 10 guys at once bare handed should be pretty hard, even for a cop. I mean a lot harder than 3 guy, at the very least.

#39 Posted by falserelic (5412 posts) -

See now if you complained about the shooting. I probably would have agreed with you at the beginning. The shooting in sleeping dogs is underwhelming. Now that would be something to feel upset about.

I love it when people freak out and say something is shit and broken simply because they are awful at it.

*THUMBS UP*

#41 Edited by larryrules138 (142 posts) -

The combat's definitely not that difficult or broken. Of course trying to pull off a big combo in the middle of a bunch of people will result in failure, which should be expected. What I find to work pretty well is to "kite" the grapplers/brawlers off to the sides and work them over fast with devastating combos. Once they're all KO'd, I just focus on countering the low-level thugs who go down fairly easily. A good rule of thumb is to not try to bust out some combo in the middle of a ring of enemies, as that'll hardly ever go in your favor. As others have said, I too have cleared all the martial arts diversions and they make you fight insane numbers of combatants all at once, of all the different varieties. Once you get the fighting mechanic down, even a huge fight like that will go smoothly.

e: Also, don't forget about environmental attacks. If you hit a guy with a combo and have room to grapple him, do that and run him over to a dumpster, phone booth, etc and he'll be out of the fight right away. I don't think the fat guys can be grabbed like this, but all the other ones can including the brawlers (guys with their fists wrapped).

#42 Posted by Karkarov (3064 posts) -

Actually the system is pretty bad ass. You need to progress down the triad and martial arts trees though and learn the moves/enemy types. Large group of enemies? Grab the brawler and do an arm break, now all the enemies are "shocked" for a second which buys you time to combo on the fat guy who can't block but grapples like a boss. Worried about a weapon user... wait for him to attack and counter, eventually this will auto disarm when the face meter is full just to add insult to injury. Etc etc. It works well once you learn it and start getting all the bonus move effects.

The combat can be rough around the edges at time, but I like that you can't just spam counters. It's not a win button.

#48 Posted by Binman88 (3685 posts) -

Can get through the 6 round fighting tournaments pretty swiftly (5 minutes or so? ...if that), only taking a few hits. Nothing wrong with the combat system. Think before you post bullshit.

#49 Posted by JoeyRavn (4964 posts) -

This game is not Batman: Arkham City in the fighting department, that's for sure, but it's pretty good nonetheless. I don't like that it puts so much emphasis on waiting for the enemies to attack so you can counter. I've just started the game, so I don't know if I'll get better offensive abilities later on, but I find myself relying too much on counters to start combos (especially against the enemies you can't grapple or who block your attacks).

But then again, Assassin's Creed does the same and I have no problems with those games.
