The Two Types of Snus
- Loose Snus is a moist powder which can be formed into a portion by using your fingertips. The end product is a prilla.
- Portion Snus is snus which is already packaged in a bag, for convinence. The material of the bag is the same as the one used in tea bags. There is less snus in these, but they are sometimes prefered since they are easier to handle.
What Snus Is Made Of
Snus is made from air dried tobacco mixed with water, salt, sodium carbonate and aroma and is finally prepared through heating, generally through steam.
Snus and Health
Since snus is not intended nor recommended for inhalation, it does not affect the lungs as cigarettes do. Because it is steam-cured, rather than fire-cured like smoking tobacco or other chewing tobacco, it contains lower concentrations of nitrosamines and other carcinogens that form from the partially anaerobic heating of proteins; 2.8 parts per mil for Ettan brand compared to as high as 127.9 parts per mil in American brands.
Around 2005 the warning label that Snus could cause cancer was removed, and replaced with a more neutral "May effect your health negatively" warning label. There is still research going on about snus, and still no conclusive reports about the health effects of snus.
Recent actions by many European governments to limit the use of cigarettes has led to calls to lift the ban on snus, as it is generally considered to be less harmful than cigarette smoke, both to the user and to others.
