I'm glad someone else has Sonic The Hedgehog 2 as their favorite. (Sonic 2 is my favorite platformer of all time) I've played some of Sonic 3. It's levels are okay but not anything truly special (Sonic 2 has the best levels out of any game), the bosses weren't that great and Carnival Zone is no Casino Night Zone (I gave up on the Carnival Zone level)

I agree, though the Death Egg can suck my eggs.
I haven't beaten that boss in over a decade and even then, I can't remember if it was me or my buddy who finally beat him.
Replaying the Sonic Mega Collection on the Gamecube really cemented that Sonic 2 is the pinnacle.

I second Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you can't beat Hyper Sonic. You just can't.

I think the music in Sonic 2 stands uncontested as the best music in the series (I catch myself humming Chemical Plant Zone's theme more than twice a week), but the experience and art design of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles is much more satisfying. 

Also, it's also fair for me to say I hate the final few stages in Sonic 2.  The Sonic Team builds these levels to take away Sonic's one strength: his speed.  Planting steel crabs and Praying Mantises at the crest of a loop or just off-screen whilst Sonic is hurdling down a flat stretch is complete, utter bullshit.

Liquid means the game titled "Sonic & Knuckles".  I mean, your point still holds: they, along with Tails, are still the best of the protagonists. "

I was a big fan of Sonic CD and the first Sonic Adventure.  Sonic and the Secret Rings was pretty good too.  The DS Sonic games arent bad either.  But other than those they have been pretty bad lately.

Sonic CD has always been my favorite. Not only was the game awesome, but you could pop the disc into your CD player and listen to the music of the game. Friggin incredible. 

After Sonic and Knuckles perhaps, then they had a sucessful port into 3D and then downhill.

I love Sonic 2, it's the first game I ever played. But I think Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the ultimate Sonic game. 

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the definate Sonic experience. Sonic Adventure is  pretty good too though...
