Soul Calibur II

Soul Calibur II is a video game that consists of 1 release

The third entry in the Soul series, and being the first to release on all major home consoles. SC II was also the first in the series to introduce exclusive cameos from other franchises.

Soul Calibur II is the third installment in the Soul Calibur series, a franchise of fighting games developed and published by Namco. Soul Calibur II offered much improved graphics and also introduced a number of new stages, new characters and also some new music. The series story was also continued in Soul Calibur II, with the game being named after the Holy Sword which had been created to battle the evil sword 'Soul Edge' from the first game in the series, Soul Blade.

Story

Nightmare
Soul Calibur II is set around 4 years after the events of the original Soul Calibur; information from the Soul Archives Website sets the actual story's date around the year 1591. A wave of terror and pain sweeps over Europe, but it all suddenly comes to an end. The Azure armoured plated knight Nightmare and his many followers have collected enough souls and soon begin to prepare for the restoration ceremony in the once proud Osthreinsburg Castle. But just as the ceremony is about to begin, three young warriors assault the castle. The clan battle the warriors but are eventually defeated, leaving Nightmare standing in front of the three Warriors wielding the Sacred Trinity. An intense battle begins which eventually sees Nightmare defeated, but soon the Evil Soul inside Soul Edge sends the three brave Warriors into a vortex of hell. As a result of the swords evil aura, Krita-Yuga soon reveals its actual form as Soul Calibur, the Holy Sword. After an intense battle, in which the Holy Sword takes victory, the hellfire Vortex collapses and sucks in both the sword and Nightmare. They are expelled into another location. Siegfried Schtauffen who had only moments before been the evil Nightmare was now recognizing his sins and having his mind cleared, decided to set out on a Journey of Atonement. But despite no longer being Nightmare, the sword still held a powerful bond over Siegfried and every night it would take over him and require the souls of those nearby. All the efforts made by the young night were eventually hopeless as four years later the Azure Armour Covered Nightmare returned. It was around this time that various Warriors came into contact with the many different fragments of the Soul Edge blade, revealing that it had in fact survived after the battle with Soul Calibur. With Nightmare starting a new journey of destruction, these Warriors began their own journey, either driven to possess the blade or destroy it for good.

Modes and Features

For the most part, Soul Calibur II offers very much the norm when it came to game modes and features in the fighting genre:
  • These include the classic Arcade Mode, Team Battle Mode (this is very similar to Arcade mode, except up to 8 fighters can be used and there are no cutscenes or endings), Time Attack (fight against the clock to gain records), Survival Battle and a Training Mode (which allowed the player to train with a specific character of choice) were also included. There were also 'Extra' versions of these modes, which allowed you to use extra weapons. Another worthy note is the fact that in the Arcade Mode, the 7th Battle was also known as the 'Destined Battle' and was a battle which was predefined and never changes. These battles featured different fighters depending on the characters backstory, this feature was also found in previous Soul games.
  • Another feature that has returned from the original Soul Blade is the inclusion of extra weapons. But instead of Soul Blade's system of different statistics, the Soul Calibur II system is based around Power and Defensive percentages and also has special extras including such abilities as Energy Drain and pass through defense. Each of the characters found in the game has 12 different weapons of choice, which generally range from the standard first and second player weapons to the ultimate power weapons which would be eagerly wanted by fans of the game. Each character is also granted a Soul Edge version of their arms as well as joke weapons,  which are often riddled with bad stats but have humorous effects. All of the weapons found in Soul Calibur II have some sort of back story that can be read at the 'Weapon Gallery' found within the game.
  • The Arcade Version of Soul Calibur II also added an extra game mode in 'Conquest Mode' which allowed the player to choose an army, fight enemies and gain experience as they played along. These experienced points allowed the player to gain the levels of the selected fighter they had chosen.
  • Much like the original Soul Calibur, a Museum could be found which contained Character Artwork, various videos and weapon exhibition (also known as Katas). There was also a 'Profile Viewer' and 'Battle Theatre (Which allowed you to watch CPU vs CPU Battles).
  • Soul Calibur II also featured the ' Weapon Master Mode' which built upon the 'Conquest Mode' found in the Arcade Version of the game. This was a similar mode to the 'Edge Master Mode' found in Soul Blade and also Soul Calibur's 'Mission Mode'. The mode offered an alternative take on history, and allowed you to travel the map which was split into different regions (and named after stars), the player would fight enemies to gain experience which would raise the rank of the fighter. Money would also be obtainable in this mode, which would later be spent on new weapons, new costumes, art and videos. The structure of the mode had 10 normal chapters, 4 sub-chapters and 2 extra chapters. There was also 2 extra missions which were an alternative version of Normal Missions. The Actual story of this mode saw the player control a swordsman on the journey searching for Soul Edge, but he is soon faced with a powerful mad knight named Veral, who searches for the sword to use in his own desires.
  • As in Soul Calibur, a number of characters were given a 3rd choice of costume, purchasable in Weapon Master Mode. Out of the 25 characters found within the game, only 13 were actually given an extra 3rd costume choice. Link  had three different costumes, same as the three found in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, with only the black costume not found in the game.
  • Another interesting note is that the game also allowed players to listen to voice overs in both English and Japanese.

Universal Success & Criticism

For the most part, Soul Calibur II was favorably received by the gaming media. Getting consistently high scores from numerous gaming media outlets. It also became a popular game to be used in competitive tournaments in both Japan and America for a good few years after its original release. The game was well known for its balanced feel and had various different characters placed in the top levels of competitive gaming action. Even though the game was generally well received, at the higher levels of play. A number of issues and bugs arose with some being game breaking, bugs such as the 2G Bug (which allowed players to block immediately after being guard impacted) and G-Step (which allowed players to sidestep vertical attacks and immediately cancel their sidesteps, allowing for instant punishment). There were also many moves in Soul Calibur II which were safe on block, which meant that if they were guarded, their user would recover to a neutral state before their opponent could try to attack again. Characters such as Astaroth benefited from this the most.

Interestingly, some of the playing styles of a number of the Soul Characters are similar. For instance, the characters of
Cassandra and Yun-seong are based around the same playing styles of more established Characters Sophitia and Hwang. Charade, much like his predecessors Inferno and Edge Master will switch his playing style to match existing characters move lists with every round of fighting often finding a player meeting a total different opponent when it comes to the move list at Charade's disposal. Berserker is also similar to Rock.

All three of the home versions also included Necrid, who was not included in the Arcade Version of Soul Calibur 2. Like Spawn, he was created by comic book artist Todd McFarlane. Despite some new Soul Characters, a number of old favourites didn't appear including Hwang, Nathaniel 'Rock' Adams and Edge Master. Inferno was found in the game, though he is not a playable character. Siegfried did appear in the game as Nightmare's second and third costumes.
