A superb fighting game lopsided by a few noticeable quirks. 1

Within the vast array of fighting games available on the market, there has always been one series that has asserted its uniqueness and style within the slew of traditional fighters. Yes, I’m talking about Tecmo’s Soul Calibur series. There’s no denying that this weapon-based fighting frenzy has made an impact on the fighting game genre, and even though it dates back to the simpler days of Dreamcast, it still retains its essence with Soul Calibur IV on the Xbox 360. Obviously, no game is ...

    The soul still burns 0

Soulcalibur IV is the newest game of the perpetually misspelled, weapon based fighting series. The fighting is exactly what you would expect if you have played any other game in the series. It mainly focuses around blocking and parrying different weapons then exploiting your foe in their time of weakness. The wide variety of weapons covers anything from razor sharp katana to obnoxiously large diamond swords. With so many different types of weapons and fighting styles it remains unique from other...

A complete waste of money; a marginal time saver 0

Let's get one thing straight; Soulcalibur IV was the best fighting game of 2008, a true return to form for the series, and in my humble opinion, a modern fighting game classic. However, to describe Namco's idea of what should be premium DLC as laughable would be giving them too much credit.  All you need to know is this; what you are paying for in this pack is something that is already in the game. Once you defeat Story Mode with a character, you unlock their ultimate weapon that the character, ...

    Soul Calibur IV Review 0

The Soul Calibur series is one of the many fighting game series out there, though this one has it unique differences from the rest. For example the ability to create your own character, or have your character level up and gain new abilities as time goes on. The main story for this game is you are a warrior that must defeat others in an attempt to claim the cursed sword, and stop the world destruction, or something along those lines. The graphics in the PlayStation 3 version look amazing. There ar...

Of Souls and Caliburs and an IV 0

SoulCalibur IV has been released, purchased, and played. The result? More frustration, swearing, and instant console shut-offs than I've had in awhile. Yet I turn the system back on and start the game up again. The fourth game in the Soul Calibur series has become a love/hate relationship. In addition to an AI that is either dumb as dirt or omnipotent and god-like, there is also a game with excellent controls, beautiful visuals, and a great cast of characters (sans Star Wars). The quickest scapego...

    Yoda sucks. 1

Makes me wish I had a PS3. Soulcalibur III was a bit of a disappointment to me, as it didn't seem as interesting to play as its awesome predecessor, Soulcalibur II. I can safely say, though, that this is the best game in the series. Everything just feels right. Plus, there's a single player mode actually worth playing, believe it or not. Tower of Lost Souls is pretty hard, so working your way through that can provide some longevity. On the subject of the guest characters. As you probably can tel...

    Good Fun 0

I've been playing SC since it came out on dreamcast way back in the day. I'm not what you would call a "hardcore fighter" type of person, but I know a good game when I see it. So when I heard about this coming out for 360, I was rather excited. The gameplay is clean and crisp. Online is fun and can get Addictive trying to get that next online level. I know I spent a good hour saying "this is my last match" only to jump right back in again. The Single player modes are fun, and getting new unlock...

Aint got NOTHING on Street Fighter 3

Being a huge fan of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur was a fighting game I never really got into.  I tried it once on the PS2 a few years back and thought it was okay, but nowhere near as good as Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.  Well, now it's come out next gen and you can play online.  Why not try it out?  Well, I did and I'm not impressed.  First of all I don't know who any of the characters are, since I wasn't into the first games, or any of their moves or special attacks.  The...

Soul Calibur 4 is a darn decent game. I still had a lot of fun with it, but for whatever reason, it just doesn't have the same 'soul' as previous entries.Although most fans cite SCII as their favorite in the series, mine is III. SCIV is very close to its direct predecessor in many terms, but enough has changed to dip the quality a bit.Let's start with the two things I liked most about SCIII - lack of random guest characters, and the Create-A-Soul mode. Although I think random crossovers on the w...

    A dud. 0

I'm a fan of fighting games with a lot of Tekken 2 hours under my belt. Visually the game is stunning and the sounds are decent. There are plenty of characters to choose from and the customize system is pretty neat. The story and arcade modes are very short so it's a good thing the loading times are no longer then 5-10 seconds. I don't like the ring out system at all. It's a very cheap way of winning or losing. The tower mode is alright but sometimes it can get too hard unless you have a very sp...

    Sharpen your swords 0

As this 4th entry in the now legendary Soul Calibur series comes to stores, many are likely asking how Project Soul is innovating their franchise.  Starting off, the character models in this game look gorgeous, animation is fluid, boobs bounce in almost absurd ways, and weapon impacts feel spot on.  The game integrates a very robust character creation system allowing for players to completely customize any of the stock characters or create a completely new one.In perhaps a ridiculous Star Wars  ...

    Oh,Soul Calibur IV,I love you. 2

Soul Calibur IV has been highly anticipated by,not only me,but many other gamers. But does it live up to the hype?Let's see if I think it does... Well the story goes like the DOA games. You choose a character and go through a short story then take ona  tough boss fight. But from what I remember the DOA's characters story's wasn't entirely interesting, but these story are put together pretty well.Especially The Apprentice's story, you have to buy this game just to see how his short story end's.But now...

Soul Calibur IV: Turn It Up To Eleven 3

Soul Calibur IV: Turn It Up To Eleven My lady in red. Well, I've spent two days with Soul Calibur IV on my PS3 now, and I must say, the nostalgia is invigorating. But simultaneously, I've found that it's got enough new and improved features (not to mention the absolutely gorgeous graphics) to keep me from feeling like I'm playing the same game I used to know and love. I always found Soul Calibur to be a game that rewards focus on learning a character inside and out, and SC4 is no exception. Th...

    More of the same 0

If you are a long-time fan of the Soul Calibur series, then IV will hold few surprises, but at this point, I don't think anybody is expecting a top-to-bottom overhaul.  As you would expect, the main improvements are in the graphics.  Characters are ludicrously detailed, decked out in insane, eye-popping outfits, accessorized to the max.  The color palette is bold and vibrant.  The camera can focus on closer objects now, making the backgrounds realistically blurry.  If you have a hi-def setup, th...

Soul Calibur 4 is solid but has its heart in the wrong place 0

Soul Calibur 4 : A Medieval-themed fighting game. Or at least a medieval-themed fighting game with the camp-value turned all the way up. Oh, and there’s Yoda thrown in there for some reason. Story : So we can now confirm that "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" was simply referring to 1500s Europe. Or at least an alternate dimension of 1500s Europe where the nutrition of the general population was different enough to make their women significantly more endowed and the men look significant...

Imagine that $60 dollars was all it took to buy yourself a super model. She’d be available whenever you want and all you have to do is turn on your Xbox 360. That’s about what you get when you buy Soul Calibur IV: something that looks and plays great, but is about as deep as the disc is thick. Dueling in one of Soul Calibur IV's lush environments.   The nuts and bolts of Soul Calibur IV haven’t really changed; you pit two over-elaborately designed fighters together on a 2D field with the capa...

    Soul Calibur IV Review 1

Whether you’re playing offline or on, SoulCalibur IV is always watching. The more you play, the higher your fighter’s level progresses, thus unlocking customizable upgrades like weapons and armor. This adds a hell of a lot of replay value to the game, but considering how absolutely phenomenal this 3D fighter is it’s unlikely you’ll be playing it for the extras. Once you step in to the Arcade or Story Mode it’ll take a lot of convincing to go to the Create-a-Character’s color schemes and menu scr...

Soulcalibur 4 is a good game for the facts that it's pretty, you can customize characters, you can play as darth vader(brain explosion), and you can play online but other than that all other elements are anywhere from okay to mediocre. The gameplay is almost exactly the same as even soul calibur 2 which is the latest soul calibur game I've played. It has many of the same problems as the old games or maybe you'd consider them traditions, those are that the combat never looks natural, there are a f...

Soul Calibur IV seems to want to impress everyone. With Star Wars cameos, online play, create a fighter and much more, it looks to be the best of the series.Story: 2/5The story, for canonists like me, is, well, meh.. The story of this game has jumped ship with most titles that just have a story to string along the game. It doesnt explain how the 2 swords came back to being, what the purpose of living for Zasalalmel is anymore, or how the Star Wars people got here. Gameplay: 5/5The game follows t...

    Soulcalibur IV 0

Soulcalibur IV is the fifth installment in the Soul series which originated about twelve years ago, and it’s the fourth Soulcalibur game, if you couldn’t tell by the title. The series itself is raved about for having one of the most balanced combat system in a fighting series ever. Namco Bandai maintains that, even though sometimes it feels kind of cheap with specific characters, throughout Soulcalibur IV, but there are some issues with the game that some people will not like in the least bit.  ...

The Stage of History is...Mediocre. 0

When I think of the Soul Calibur series, two things come to mind:  1) Playing the original Soul Edge on the PS1 for hours on end.  2) Getting around the largest TV my friends and I could find to play Soul Calibur when it was released on the Dreamcast.  Really, I have a lot of GREAT memories of this series (I try not to think about the guest appearances made in the past...) and this game had a lot of expectations to meet.  So far, it has yet to fully succeed.Let's start, however, with what I like...

Well, I was really pumped for Soul Calibur IV to come out. Once it did I went down to the local Hollywood Video, which for the first time ever had a game for rent on launch day. The game was amazing at first, but steadily lost attraction. Maybe it was the fact that I had not played a fighting game this generation yet that made it exciting at first, but in the end I was glad I rented it instead of buying it. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a solid game it just did not do it for me and here's ...

Trivial Flaws Mar an Excellent Game 0

Soulcalibur IV could be summarized like this; it's a fighting game, and a great one at that, but it's got some things which might annoy the average player as well as things that'll impress them. The bulk of the game is extremely well done - it looks and plays smooth, each character is unique in appearance and fighting style, it has a lot of strategic depth, and there's finally online play. As a fighting game, it really succeeds with the basic systems as well as additional techniques to make battl...

Best in series, but definitely not without it's flaws. 1

When the first Soul Calibur debuted in arcades it blew everyone's minds. It has most definitely aged gracefully (I'm STILL blown away at how good the game looked compared to all other games on the scene at the time), and the game play is so refined and balanced that it can still be gone back to and played today without a hitch, even after having gotten used to the latest incarnation.  That's a whole lot more to say about Soul Calibur to which most other first-in-series games can even come close....

Limitless replayability with decent community of players 0

"Online play has never been this frustrating..." Story: 4/10Story mode became pretty shallow when put into comparison with the games predessor. Soul Calibur IV's Story Mode offers the player a total of 5 stages, where each stage often features multiple enemies to fight. New to Soul Calibur is the addition of the AMB (Active Matching Battle) system. What this does is throw a new character into the match immediately after one has been defeated. So if you KO an opponent, the next will appear right ...

Soul Calibur is a really tricky game franchise...do you ignore some of the minor annoyances that plague it so often and simply take it like a grain of salt? Or do you focus on them? Much like the past franchises, Soul Calibur is about all of the characters we have grown to love on their quests to obtain Soul Edge/Calibur with some new faces and a few new modes sprinkled throughout. For the PS3 version, we are blessed with Darth Vader and The Apprentice, a blessing in disguise. Darth Vader is act...

Soul Calibur 4...george lucas edition.  Again we step onto the stage of history, a nonsensical phrasing that always appears to have been written by a 13yr old fresh from his AP english test, just to prove he can sound smarter than he is....and that, is exactly what i was expecting from SC4. and yet...It's not bad, miraculously enough. The story is still as ridiculous as ever. In fact my largest gripe with the game is entailed here. Namco and lucas lied to us. Now george lucas being full of it is...

Soul Calibur 4 is the lastest installment in the Soul Calibur seires.  Everything about this game is great, expect the story.  The story is about the two legendary swords; Soul Calibur and Soul Edge, and the journeys of people around the world trying to destroy or gather them.  The story is the weakest part of the game.  Luckily other modes made the game great.  Like the new mode, Tower of the Lost Souls is a great addition to the game.  The mode is about you going up a tower and facing mutiple ...

Soul Calibur IV is a decent fighting game for this generation.  Unfortunately, it is still plagued by, at least what seems to me, the genre-wide issue of multiplayer devolving into a contest to see who can use the cheapest combo over and over again without getting hit.  (Of course, that is the player's fault, mostly.)  And some of the Achievements are RIDICULOUSLY hard to get, if you are worried about that kind of thing.  However, when you look past that the game is actually really fun to play. ...
