  • Does it suck

The only other thing I would add is: Does it stay funny until the end- or at least hold up reasonably well throughout?

Very

Not in the slightest

It varies in the humor, but it's mostly quite funny.

Battle system is fun and is actually quite difficult. Anyone familiar with the Mario RPG's will be right at home, defending is difficult and requires perfect timing to block enemy attacks. Each fight is dangerous and can end your journey with a game over. You recover health and PP after each fight so you don't waste time in menus healing, and you can actually use consumable items and attack in the same turn. Combat is actually excellent in my opinion.

Is it good South Park or bad South Park?

I.e., does it reference current and past events with stinging accuracy and satire or does it just make poop and fart jokes like the achievement list suggests?

EDIT: Oh, and yeah, does the turn-based battle hold up? I must say, it looks sort of tedious, like a worse Costume Quest (which I enjoyed, despite the rote combat).

EDIT AGAIN: Well, I guess that answers that one, at least until I try it for myself.

Is there any kind of online component, or is it single player only?

Or even.....uuuuuuuugh, I hate myself for typing this: mingleplayer

It holds up throughout the entire game

@vuud I'm almost entirely sure there isn't an online component.

Easily over 20 hours, side quests and taking it all in can extend it past 30 or 40.

It doesn't suck

It's very good.

@mlarrabee That's a very good question, and the best way I can put it is it's a lot of fart jokes and nostalgia, however there is plenty of original material and I think you'll find that well sometime the humor takes missteps the way it all ties together in the overall story is actually quite well done.

Without giving away too much:

Is Kenny's death (deaths?) done well?

How do they handle Chef, who I think I saw in some promo video for the game, but has been dead in South Park for years, and his voice actor passed away several years ago?

How are the references? Do they skew mostly towards newer South Park episodes, older episodes, or just all over the place?

How did you get to play it early?

Kenny doesn't die as far as I can tell, he's a main character and one of your allies known as "Princess Kenny"

I believe Chef is fought as a boss fight and he's brought back to life as a Terminator like robot.

The references are beyond incredible. You find loot that's only good for selling that varies from things like "Brad-Pitt Survival Kits" to "Shake Weights" and everything in between. It's mind blowing the amount of detail there is in things you may never notice selling quickly to a vendor.

Secret, but I have the PS3 version if anyone was wondering.

(I got it from a friend who works at a store with an electronic section)

That's a very difficult question. I'm not entirely sure how to answer it other than I wouldn't recommend it to someone who wasn't at least a fan of RPG's or South Park.

I would say it's definitely a quality title, the game plays fantastic and the looks exceptional. I feel like if you went in open minded you may actually enjoy the journey "Stick of Truth" offers.

I've had it since Friday, played over 25 hours on and off with a friend, haven't completed it yet but I have pretty good idea how much is left.

You get him as your first facebook friend and ally in combat. So almost the entire game has Butters.

What did you run into in the way of bugs/glitches? It is Obsidian, and reviews seem to be mentioning technical issues.

Very minor technical issues, nothing that took away from my experience.

#26 Posted by newhaap (421 posts) -

@bisonhero: I've played about an hour of it and the first noticeable bug I ran into was that the characters would flash in and out sometimes and straight up disappears at one point. Very annoying, hopefully doesn't happen a lot.

I read Alex's review and ran to get myself a copy of this game. I have fallen off on watch South Park in the recent years but at one point in my life I was addicted to the show. This game isn't just great because of the obvious fan service it provides but it is just a great game overall. All of the mechanics of this game could've been used in any other setting and it would have worked well. Adding the fact that there is good humor and witty writing all over this game is just icing on top.

Hi, Kotaku seems to think there is too many bugs in this game.

How many did you encounter and how "bad" were they?

They're almost non-existent I have no idea what Kotaku is talking about.

#31 Posted by spiralcut (118 posts) -

@vladd: I have to agree. I had one moment of combat *sticking* where the animations just kept repeating, but a quick load brought me back to just before that fight began. No real issues at all.

#32 Posted by TooWalrus (13197 posts) -

@xalienxgreyx: have you noticed a way to not attack for a turn? I'm only an hour in, but I was in a situation where Butters was out of PP and didn't have a ranged attack, and the only enemy left would counter my hammer attack, so it seemed like there was no choice but to have Butters eat sword. I'm sure there's something obvious I'm missing.

That's a pretty good point and although I never had that issue I can see it as problematic. The only thing I can say is once you're a few hours deep, (like 2 - 4) you will have so many consumables using one for PP regain and using a special move is not an issue.

Also you'll acquire additional team mates like Kenny very soon who attacks with a bow and can be swapped in and out within battle. I think you may have just found a little design flaw the will quickly become inconsequential.

Attempting not to venture into spoiler territory, like he said Butters is your first friend in town (to ensure you don't get beat up, hahaha) and then proceeds to follow you around town as you get the lay of the land. The way I played, I sort of accidentally wandered in a full circle around the map and discovered almost every location before I'd even done any of the requirements for Cartman's first main quest and it was AWESOME because Butters will constantly point out town landmarks and explain how he got bullied at that location by one character or another.

Also, as a fellow fan of the kid, it was great to see that he is actually much stronger than your character for most of the time you play with him before Kenny joins your party as mentioned above, and by then if you're using your materia-equivalents right you're clearly the leader.

#35 Posted by TooWalrus (13197 posts) -

@xalienxgreyx: yeah, I've played a few more hours and it hasn't come up again, like you said, I could pop a potion or switch to Kenny. Game seems pretty great.

I finished it, second half of the game is insanely epic and hilarious, the game actually manages to get better in the second half than kinda drag on like I was suspecting.

Hey, I'm about 6.5 hours in, and I have no idea how to get to Canada, will this occur naturally or do I have to do something very specific to get into it? Also for Butter's first skill the animation runs but no light shows up to tell me when to attack, am I missing something?

Also, oh dear god the Mage class+life steal+PP regen on attacks is so wonderfully broken

I've not seen much of South Park, and I'm enjoying the game, but I have enjoyed what I've seen of the show. I think the combat and gameplay is great but if you're not a fan of South Parks humour at all. then I wouldn't buy it yet.

#39 Edited by Vladd (53 posts) -

Got the game "early" today, I'm having a blast playing it. But as said by many, you probably won't like it if you don't like South Park. But then again many people don't watch it but can get surprised by the depths on some episodes.

A big part of the game is fan service, another is a parody of RPG games, or games in general.

Do you remember how you trigger the amoeba fight at the school? Trying to figure that out right now. I have no idea how to do it ...

For the amoeba fight I needed rubbing alcohol, not sure where I found it though.

Without spoiling much, I have some questions about the endgame:

Is there post main quest content? Can I continue playing after I completed the final boss to finish side quests and collectibles? Or is there a point of no return?

You can keep playing BUT~~~~!!!!! Some levels/areas are only accessible the one time you see them and some areas that were open in the past are gone after the final boss is beaten.
@boatorious - You get the item you need to start it from Jimbo, it is part of his big game hunter quest.

I do too -- I just have no idea how to actually trigger the fight. I don't know if you have to "use" the item (if so, I can't figure that out) or go to a place (if so, I can't find the place).

Thanks! :)

I had to restart the game today on my second playthrough, the sky disappeared and the audio cut out. Not a big deal rebooted and it worked fine.

I've never been much of a fan but I have enjoyed myself some South Park. As someone who is more of a casual fan if anything, would I still be able to enjoy this game?

Anyone knows how to get into the graveyard? I've seen 2 screenshots with parts of the game which I never encountered, the graveyard and that fight with the crab people. I already finished with the warrior and mage, befriended almost everyone including that crab in the sewers and the only quest I didn't end is Hide and Seek - one child remains to be found. Also I didn't get the key from Chef.

Ah ok.

I have the game now and I'm laughing my ass off, I wouldn't care if I encountered bad bugs honestly. The game is worth every ounce of frustration.

Only bad thing with the game is that it's too damn easy! :)
