Space Tactics made its North American debut at the 1980 AMOA show (where Pac-Man also debuted), where it was declared the "arcade sit-down hit of the show" by leading arcade magazine RePlay.

The arcade cabinet's unique monitor behaved in a somewhat similar manner to gyroscope motion control, and was a precursor to the motion cabinets that Sega used for later arcade games such as Space Harrier, After Burner, and Galaxy Force. Some of the gameplay in Space Tactics is also similar to Gorf released the following year.
