Many deaths await you in Spelunky 0

Death in video games is something that's very familiar to all gamers, even if survival is more prevalent than in the days of the coin-up classics. Dying (or 'dying') can often feel cheap and frustrate you – but when the situation is such that you can clearly see where you went wrong, the 'one more go' factor sets in, and you're immediately back for more. Spelunky's appeal lies in the way that you're killed by creatures or traps that you know you should have avoided. It is only the first time you...

    I'm going deeper underground 1

Spelunky is an unusually game, but it’s a fantastic game that offers more than similar freely available games. The protagonist of this game is an unnamed Indiana Jones type who ventures underground in search of gold, gems and damsels, armed with only a bullwhip and the ability to pick up rocks and other items. There isn’t much in the way of a story, but this isn’t a game that needs a story. Along the way you meet snakes, bats, spiders, monkeys, cavemen, yetis, piranha, UFOs and more. To say tha...

With fate guiding my every move into death. 0

Spelunky is a 2D platformer developed by Mossmouth for XBLA. In Spelunky, you take on the role a spelunker who stumbles upon a mysterious mine full of treasure and follows his adventure as he tries to escape with all the riches it has to offer. It takes some cues from the roguelike genre in that death is permanent and there is a lot of death to had in Spelunky as you try to make your way through the four different tile sets trying to escape with the ultimate treasure.A key component of Spelunky ...

Death is Only the Beginning 0

If you had told me that one day I would love a game that will kill you at every possible turn, and that when these multitude of deaths would occur, I would laugh and start over, I would have called you a madman. But as I sit and play through Spelunky I do just that, I shrug it off and start all over again!Normally a game where death awaits you so frequently would be a huge turnoff for me, its not something that I generally enjoy happening. But Spelunky somehow manages to make the deaths charmi...

    Spelunky Review (PC). 0

The high definition upgrade to the much loved randomly generated platformer finally hit the PC on August the 8th, having been available on consoles for a good while now. Bringing with it an exclusive mode and it's usual amount of infuriating anger as you attempt to make your way through the ever more challenging levels. For those unfamiliar with Spelunky, we shall take a quick history level.Death is a constant companion in Spelunky, but it always feels fair and is most always a result of your o...

    Spelunky PC Review 0

Spelunky hates you. A lot. It isn't a friendly game and it isn't afraid to kill you over, and over again, until you learn the ins and outs...With this punishing platformer making it's way over to PC, I have finally been able to experience it, along with all the accompanying challenges. The focus of Spelunky is a 'roguelike' in the fact that when you die, that's it, gotta start all over again from the top. As the name would suggest, you spelunk your way down through the caves, to the jungle and b...

A game of face palming and fist pumping 0

Spelunky is awesome... and terrible, but mostly awesome. Its a 2d platformer where timing your jumps may be the easiest thing you'll do. Imagine your Indiana Jones delving through caves, you want to take your time and use something like a rock to set off that arrow trap below you rather then your 'is not a pin-cushion' side. Rumor has it though that after say 2 minutes 30 seconds you'll feel the chill of a GHOooOOoooOOST (ok not that spooky I know but that guy 1 shots!).However we all can't be I...

Death has never been so much fun 0

Tough but fair. This is a game that rewards players who develop good habits (as anyone who's died for the nth time to a spider inside a pot can attest to...), and who like their sense of progress to come from learning new skills as a player, rather than collecting XP points until your character is buff enough to cakewalk the boss. It also gives more than a nod to the Indiana Jones series throughout, as well as other films such as Independence Day, Aliens and Evil Dead. You'll take on 4 (or 5, dep...

    The Game of Death 0

Spelunky is pretty amazing. I die so often, but i keep coming back. I stay to long and ghost comes to kill me. Oh look i found a jet pack. I took a leap of faith into a pit of lava. I hate hired help. Omg, i found a robot! Holy, an entire level of gold. Aliens! There are Aliens in my temple. Why? See this game is amazing!...

    Brutally Fun 0

I've played around 30 hours of Spelunky at this point. I am worlds better at it than I was when I first picked it up. But on my best run I still haven't even gotten to the final world yet. More often than not I can't even make it past the second world. Truth be told, I just died on the very first level on the last game I played. So why am I giving Spelunky a thumbs up?Because the game is fun. And fair. Mostly fair, at least.Let's get this out of the way: Spelunky is a hard game. 30 hours in and ...

Bombs, Shotguns and fittingly, Death 0

Spelunky is not a forgiving game, at least not all of the time, but that is to be expected where random world generation is concerned and areas where enviromental hazards and health-sapping creatures are an ever present. You play an archeologist exploring first a cave system then later jungles, icey caverns and temple ruins. The ultimate goal is really survival but along the way you'll collect treasure, prevent dangerous traps and creatures from pasting you, trade money for valuable resources (o...

Spelunky Review – Psychotic Enjoyment 0

I come to you as someone who has not been able to complete Spelunky. I’ve seen the Temple multiple times, but have been swiftly knocked on my ass before walking through that final door. I told myself I need to complete it, but I can’t suffer through this anymore. Spelunky brings out the worst in the gamers, including myself, and forces you change your inpatient habits. It’s an amazing experience with superb controls and extremely tense moments of fear. It’s incredibly rewarding, and evokes a sen...

    A remake worth a thousand playthroughs 0

Nobody can tell you how much I played the original Spelunky, and nobody can also tell you how much I sucked at it. Spelunky is a roguelike-platformer hybrid that successfully captures the Indiana Jones feel of amassing treasure and saving damsels while whipping dangerous creatures and discovering unparalleled secrets. I have played the original Spelunky over five-hundred times, and yet I still can't seem to advance very far past the first and second areas, and I'm a platformer whiz with games li...

Dr. Jones, Dr. Jones, Calling Dr. Jones 0

Mossmouth Studios has done what no other developer has done before with Spelunky: make a good Indiana Jones video game. This charming indie remake borrows heavily from Raiders of the Lost Ark’s pulpy aesthetic and mixes it with punishing design choices to fuel your desire for exploration. You’ll crack a whip, fight snakes and tarantulas, and take some golden idols from trap-laden pedestals just like Harrison Ford’s famous character, all while trying to avoid swift death. Spelunky doesn’t shy awa...

Spelunky - Embrace Death, Rise Above It 0

This review is for the XBLA version of Spelunky. There is an extremely similar free version online, but this critique pertains to the specific changes made for the console release.Embrace Death and Rise Above ItMost great things are difficult to qualify in words. You can tell somebody that the Mona Lisa is a great painting of an ugly lady, or that Blade Runner is a great movie about robots, but that does nothing compared to watching Rutger Hauer deliver his final soliloquy while slowly deactivat...
