Spikes are dangerous and often deadly obstacles that can line the floor, walls, or ceiling of any given room or passageway. The playable character is usually asked to circumnavigate these obstacles or suffer loss of life.

Spikes, in it's earliest and basic form, are the developers way of saying "you did something wrong, you are penalized (lose a life,start over etc) and must try this again."

Over time, spikes have evolved from basic triangles to spike mechanisms and even spike strips used in games involving cops.
