Can't connect to EA.

So, I just bought Spore. My brother installed it on his computer, registered to play online and it worked perfectly fine.

Now, how does all the protection on the game works? I installed the game on my computer and, from what I understood, I'll only be able to play online if I use the same login as my brother, with his e-mail. But when I try to conect to EA to start playing, it says that a conection could not be made. Does this have any relation to the game protection, or it is something else altogether?
