Squawks the Parrot debuts in Donkey Kong Country for the SNES. He makes a single appearance in the level "Torchlight Trouble," where he follows Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong through a cavern. The level is dark, and the only source of light is the lantern Squawks carries with his feet as he follows Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong around. He is released from a crate and does not possess his own Animal Token.
Squawks' abilities are fleshed out more in Donkey Kong Country 2. He can either be released from a crate, or Diddy Kong or Dixie Kong can transform into him using a barrel. His powers expand beyond a detached lantern. Squawks can be directly controlled to fly around levels and shoot eggs from his beak. He also carries the Kongs on his feet and does not run away; instead, when he takes damage, a Kong falls from his feet.
Squawks has the same abilities in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Donkey Kong Land 2, Donkey Kong Land III, and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble.
