Destructoid reports the next issue of Official PlayStation Magazine reveals a new SSX game, that's being made by UK Guildford based developer Criterion Games

That's the rumor, coming straight from the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine. The title is said to be in development alongside the already confirmed "action" Need for Speed title that's set to ship this holiday.

Word of a Criterion-developed SSX started floating around awhile back when the company's official Twitter account dropped a mysterious message referencing SSX announcer DJ Atomika, as well as the "Peak 3."

A new SSX game? Developed by the Burnout people? Awesome. I was starting to think we'd never see another SSX.

i loved the first few SSX games, but i dont know if i would like another these days, not really into racers anymore. Hell, unless the criterion nfs is "Need For Speed: Burnout" and plays like burnout but with licensed cars, i wont care much :/

I really hope this is true, but the twitter post that they reference was one of a mess of random posts by the Criterion guys. They were talking about a lot of games, and SSX 3 caught my eye the most.

I don't trust much of anything that is said on twitter, especially from those Criterion folks. I jokingly asked them for something on Burnout Paradise 2 and got these tweets back from them:

"@nukesniper It's set on the Moon. Obviously."

"@nukesniper Lunar Challenges! Moonbase Alpha! WWII Bomber! Driving the 'Meteor Storm' lunar rover!"

I appreciate them for being wacky and crazy on twitter though.

Anyways, if Criterion is making SSX: Burnout: Need for Speed: Paradise, I need to buy four of them. Now.

They need to do two things to make this the best snowboarding game ever:

    1. Dual stick controls like Skate
    2. Sandbox

Basically make it like Skate but on snow and more over the top.

Huh. Looks like the guy who drew Empowered and Dirty Double is the artist for this. That's awesome. I can tell from the leather on the girl to the left :P (Of course, there's a couple of other obvious things that his art style tends to contain, but his leather is the most glaring one.)

I'd be vaguely interested in another SSX game. Hopefully it will include another 'making-of' documentary where Z-grade celebrities try to justify their failing careers by trying to explain the motivations for their characters.

I played the hell out of SSX Tricky and 3.  This better turn out to be true.  It's been a while since I've played a good snowboarding game.  Actually it's been a while since I've played any snowboarding game.

I totally loved SSX 3 and before that I had played quite alot SSX Tricky. But then On tour came out and it seemed not like to much of an uppgrade so I skipped it, then came Blur and I read a review that said it had control issues, besides it was for the wii and I wanted it to look "next gen" so I skipped that as well. And then nothing came out.

It took me quite a while to realize that incremental uppdates had been a part of the series since the beginning, and that expecting every game in the franshise to be a big leap forward was gonna end in disappointment. In retrospect I sort of regret not sticking with the series more.

Anyway that was then and this is now, if a new SSX is in the works, then I am all for it. Bring it, I'm ready.

I loved...i mean LOVED SSX Tricky, everything about that game was just perfect. SSX3 was a great imporvment, less wacky but still awesome.

Never picked up on tour, think that is whats it called, because the direction that game went appeared desperate, stupid and total white with drawings, which is just a terrible ui concept.

I honestly hope these rumors are true!

Being an SSX3 master myself (and someone who refuses to believe that On Tour and Blur exist), I will say that I'm half and half about the idea of Criterion making one of these games.

On one side, they know a lot about racing, and the racing portions of SSX3 in particular were pretty goddamn amazing.  HOWEVER, there was another part to that franchise:  tricks.  That's something that EA Canada knew and understood incredibly well (building their portfolio on games such as NBA Street, Sled Storm, Freekstyle, Def Jam Vendetta, and SSX).  This is the part that worries me about Criterion:  I don't know how well they can pull off the trick part of it all.

Nonetheless, I would die a happy, happy, HAPPY man just to get a new gen SSX game that rocks fucking ass in the same way that SSX3 did.  That game holds an incredibly special place in my heart and always will, and I really want to see that return to form from someone at EA.  Hopefully, Criterion can do it.

    @TomA:
Dude, totally.. there isn't really a better time for this news to come out, now that television sets across the world are transfixed upon the winter Olympics.. more specifically, transfixed upon Shaun White.

I'm not sure how I feel about EA Big not publishing it, though I love Criterion's pedigree.. if it had to be anybody else, I would have probably chosen them anyway, and I can't wait to see what they're bringing to the table.
(Also, it kinda sucks that I won't be able to say "EA SPORTS.. BIG" along with the publisher title card at the beginning of the game, though I think I'll eventually get over it =p)

I'm also kinda excited about the mentioning of DJ Atomika.. I guess I'm in the minority when I say I liked him as a wacky, slightly-annoying-but-still-cool DJ, and I absolutely loved the soundtrack of SSX 3. I didn't venture outside of the third game in the series, but I can say that it's my favourite extreme sports game of all time, easily eclipsing any game belonging to the Tony Hawk franchise, in its glory years (THPS1 - THUG), which I have quite fond memories of. My time playing SSX 3 was basically bursts of zany, unbelievable, ridiculous fun.. it was honestly a snowboarding masterpiece, and remains the only video game to have given me small cases of vertigo. Some of those jumps were siiicck, dude.

Wait.. man, I just realized this news comes from OPM.. the idea of a great new SSX game (I'm not counting you, Wii ripoffs) I won't be able to play frightens me.
SO HELP ME, BRING IT TO THE 360.

    @TinaWood:
Haha, yeah.. Burnout Revenge is one of my favourite racing games of all time, I had a ton of fun with it.

I picked up Paradise last year to satisfy my racing appetite, and I should tell you, it's a lot different than Revenge.. one of the biggest things is how much harder it is, due in large part to the removal of same-way Traffic Checking.. virtually anything you hit, you're gonna crash.
    And crash.
    And crash.
..I'd still totally recommend it to you.. it's got the Burnout name, and for the amount of content on the disc, as well as the free DLC they put out after release (ie. motorcycles..!), it's still a steal at $20.

Back to SSX.. well, I kinda covered it in my above post.
..But I can't believe that game came out in 2003. I was 13 at the time, so (naturally) I chose Grif as my character.. do I pick him again if he's in the new game, or am I too grown up for that? What if they modeled Grif himself as an adult now, should I choose another character regardless? Oh, life's dilemmas. =p

I'm interested.. who did you play as, Tina?
